Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra fundraiser Saturday: Find out where donations go

Many people donate both money and auction items to the Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra club for their annual Elegant Evening which occurs on Saturday, April 21. What many don't know is where those donations go. There was question recently in the community about donations, so the club wanted to clear up any misunderstandings.

The club recently created a diagram to better explain where each penny goes as they don't have must left over funds after they issue scholarships, grants and other forms of financial support.

Roundabout to be installed at deadly Carson Valley intersection

The intersection of State Route 88 at Centerville Lane will receive a compact traffic roundabout, and construction on it begins Monday, April 23.

From April 23 to 27, daytime lane closures from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. will take place with a pilot car leading traffic in alternating directions through the intersection. An approximately 10-day full closure of the SR 88 and Centerville Lane intersection will then begin Monday, April 30 at 10:00 a.m., with nearby detour available via Mottsville Lane and Foothill Road.

Injured man rescued by CHP helicopter near Kyburz

A Napa man was hoisted out of the Kyburz area on Friday after falling about 30 feet from a rock formation while climbing.

The H20 helicopter from the California Highway Patrol responded due to the remote location and they were assisted by the El Dorado County Fire Protection District and CAL FIRE personnel who treated the patient and prepared him for extraction.

The 52-year-old man was then transported to Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe for the treatment of major injuries.

Full agenda for South Lake Tahoe City Council

Tuesday, April 17 will be the next South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, starting at 9:00 a.m. in the council chambers at the airport.

A cannabis ordinance will once again be discussed during the meeting. Micro-businesses, on-site consumption, permit costs, taxes, and number of licensees will be a few of the points they will discuss as an ordinance is developed.

The Council will also be voting on steps to replace the City Attorney and City Manager.

Fundraising talent show in Carson City to feature South Shore dancers

Carson’s Got Talent, a talent show featuring performers from Reno, Lake Tahoe, Carson City, Douglas County, Dayton and Yerington, hits the stage at the Bob Boldrick Theater in Carson City on Saturday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m.

The show, which will be emceed by local comedian Roger Diez, is a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels Carson City.

The Scorpions headed to Lake Tahoe outdoor concert series

The lineup for the annual Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor Arena is filling up. The latest acts to sign on are the venerable German hard rock and heavy metal band Scorpions with their opening act, Queensryche, on Friday night, Aug. 31. Tickets are $69.50 to $149.50.

Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada (GSSN) have announced this year’s recipients of both their volunteer awards and those for the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), and several are from South Lake Tahoe, Zephyr Cove, Truckee and the Carson Valley.

They will be honored during Volunteer Recognition & Award Ceremony on Saturday, April 21 at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino in Reno. Two big tourism events coming to the South Shore

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The 10th annual Nevada Tribal Tourism Conference is heading to the South Shore, April 23-25, 2018 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Stateline. The theme this year is "Revitalizing Culture Through Tourism."

The conference is focused on strategies on how the southwest tribes in Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah can effectively share their rich history and culture with visitors from around the globe.

SLT Planning Commission has two openings due to resignations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City is soliciting applications for two appointments to the Planning Commission to fill vacancies due to the resignations of Jamie Orr and Jessie Dwyer.

Orr is moving out of the City Limits and Dwyer is being relocated out of the area for work. Since all commissioners must reside in the South Lake Tahoe city limits, they can no longer serve.

The terms for the two new appointments will last eight months, until January, 2019.

USFS gives opening dates for Lake Tahoe recreation areas

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will soon begin the process of opening recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Weather and snow conditions permitting, Inspiration Point will be the first site to open on Saturday, April 14, 2018. Baldwin and Nevada beaches open April 28. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center opens Friday, May 25. The Tallac Historic Site parking area opens Tuesday, May 15, and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 26.

Big Mama's Show & Shine to raise funds for Douglas County Meals on Wheels

Douglas County Senior Services are hosting their 18th annual Big Mama's Show & Shine Classic Car Show will be held on Saturday, May 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Lampe Park Pavilion in Gardnerville, Nev.

Big Mama’s is a day of vendors, crafts, food, fun, music, and classic cars. This event serves as a fundraiser for the Meals on Wheels Program which delivers meals to the home bound seniors within Douglas County. The program is projected to serve over 29,000 meals to Meals on Wheels clients in 2018, and more seniors sign up for the program each week.

Prescribed burns in Lake Tahoe ahead of next storm

Prescribed fire operations will continue around several areas around Lake Tahoe this week, weather permitting. he Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations in Sugar Pine Point and Burton Creek state parks on the West Shore, Carnelian Bay and Kings Beach on the North Shore, Logan Shoals on the East Shore and on Kingsbury Grade and off Ski Run Boulevard on the South Shore. Smoke may be present.

Young professionals hold networking events on both shores of Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP) has two networking mixers for the month of April, both great opportunities for people of all ages to socialize with other professionals and expand their network.

A South Shore networking mixer will take place on Wednesday, April 11 and a North Shore mixer on Tuesday, April 17. All members of the community are invited to attend these events, regardless of age. Although membership is encouraged and available for purchase at events, it is not required.

The cast of “Divorce Southern Style” put on 6 great performances and dedicated many hours to this very funny play. The show and set were a success because of their help in creating and attaining set props and pieces.

Top cycling teams heading to South Lake Tahoe for Amgen TOC

All eyes will be on South Lake Tahoe this May as top women and men cyclists from around the world race through the mountains during the annual Amgen Tour of California (TOC).

The top cycling teams from the U.S., Switzerland, Germany and Belgium are now confirmed to race the 645 miles of Amgen for men, including BMC Racing Team ,Team Sky, Bora–Hansgrohe and Team Katusha–Alpecin.

Climate March in South Lake Tahoe

The second People's Climate March will take place on Saturday, April 28 at 10:00 a.m., prior to the South Lake Tahoe Earth Day Celebration.

The Tahoe Climate Change Action Network organized the inaugural march in 2017 to coincide marches across the country and the huge national march in Washington, D.C. marking President Trump's 100th day in office. Marches protested the President's environmental policies, changes to the Environmental Protection Agency and the rolling back of Obama-era regulations on fossil fuels.

On March 29t, Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal diners had a special treat, a delicious Filipino themed dinner. The evening’s meal was lovingly prepared and served by the Filipino Community members for their annual Adopt-A-Day of Nourishment sponsorship. This fantastic group served up teriyaki chicken and vegetables, chicken adobo, steamed rice, coleslaw topped off with delicious desserts to the 93 attending dinner guests. Needless to say, there were no ‘leftovers’ at the end of the meal.

Mountain Travel Symposium brings 1,100 people from 35+ countries to Lake Tahoe

This week provides another chance for South Lake Tahoe to shine as over 1100 people from over 35 countries will descend upon the city April 8-14, 2018 for the 43rd Mountain Travel Symposium (MTS), the largest and longest running annual gathering of mountain travel professionals in the world.

Meeting planners, tourism bureaus, executives from ski resorts and lodging properties and many more will take part in the symposium hosted by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA), Heavenly Mountain Resort, Harrah's Lake Tahoe and Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.

If you had walked onto the LTCC campus on Tuesday, April 3, you would have never guessed that there were 325 6th grade youth and 220 agency and volunteer workers throughout the corridors, all learning information on how and why to keep themselves safe from drugs. “Choices, what are yours?” was the theme of our efforts in keeping our youth drug free. With the country’s attitudes and norms about drug use changing, times are even more difficult for our kids.

Stateline area without power as work continues on underground vault

LAKE TAHOE, Nevada - There is a planned electrical outage in the Stateline area Wednesday so crews can continue to work on the underground vault that exploded Sunday, April 1.

NV Energy estimates that power will be out for the 18 customers in the area until about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday night.

Smoke from large prescribed fire may come into Lake Tahoe Basin

The Eldorado National Forest will begin implementing the Power Fire Fuels Maintenance project 13,50 acres southwest of Lake Tahoe on April 4, ahead of the incoming storm.

Two portions of that project, units 4 and 6, will be prescribed burned. These units are south of Highway 88 between Bear River Reservoir and the Mokelumne River in the 2004 Power Fire burn scar. Due to wind flows, smoke from this fire may come into the Lake Tahoe basin starting Wednesday.

Change in weather ahead for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as many were enjoying sunny skies and temps in the 50s and 60s, Mother Nature is sending a bit of change to the area this week.

Coming in from the west is a significant storm with gusty winds and heavy rains Friday through Sunday. The storm is a warm and wet one so there will be the potential for flooding along creeks, streams and rivers.

Monday will be back in the mid-50s.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested in Sonoma County

Michael Lindauer, 34, of South Lake Tahoe, was arrested in Sonoma, Calif., on March 17 on charges of felony grand theft, giving false ID to a peace officer, possession of stolen property and shoplifting. He is currently in the county jail in Santa Rosa on $15,000 bail after being discovered with stolen property including keys to 16 different vehicles.

On Saturday, March 17, Sonoma police received a call about a subject who stole a key from a vehicle on First Street East near the Little League fields.

Review: Dinner theater in South Lake Tahoe a real treat

For a second year, the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe has brought live theater to the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. This year, a production of Divorce Southern Style hits the stage created inside the clubhouse.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I received my tickets, but I was thoroughly impressed and the night was very enjoyable with a great three-course dinner and lots of laughs.

The golf course's brand new bar was unveiled on opening night of "Divorce," so it was the centerpiece before the food and entertainment. Beautifully done with copper and wood throughout.

Pitbull to headline at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert venue during Celebrity Golf

Rapper, singer, actor and producer Pitbull will perform at the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor Arena on Friday evening, July 13. This will be the highlight concert for the 29th annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship.

Pitbull's real name is Armando Christian Pérez and he will be at the United Nations in New York City on March 22, World Water Day, to be named Clean Water Here Ambassador.

Tickets for the 7:00 p.m. show will be $59.50 to $149.50.

Johnson Lane residents invited to attend drainage master plan presentation

Donny and Marie Osmond heading to South Lake Tahoe for outdoor concert

They are a "little bit country" and a "little bit rock n' roll." They came to American television during their variety show series from 1976 to 1979 and now they're headed to South Lake Tahoe.

An Evening with Donny and Marie Osmond have been added to the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series lineup at Harveys Outdoor Arena and will be on the South SHore Friday, Aug. 24.

Another addition to the schedule is Robert Plant’s fiddle player will perform solo as the “walk in” music prior to the Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters show on June 23. Los Lobos will open the show.

Healthy tips during National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month, a time to return to the basics of healthful eating. The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) invites all community members to make March their healthiest month yet.

“Whether you’re starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast or fueling before a workout, the foods you choose can make a real difference,” said Theresa Fagouri, Health Education Coordinator for HHSA’s SNAP-Ed Nutrition Program.
