The Soroptimist international of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) organization has a long history of service to the community. This wonderful group of women chose to sponsor a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment on Monday, March 5th, as their continuing commitment to serve those in need. The SITS members representing their organization at their sponsorship dinner were Jean Bergner, Julie Nelson, Shelly Martinez, Carolyn Robinson and Joanne Shope and Wendy David, B&B Volunteer Team #1 lead cook.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is looking for hard-working, dedicated volunteers that are interested in helping to preserve one of our nation’s most beautiful wilderness areas, Desolation Wilderness. Interested and committed individuals are invited to attend an informational open house on Thursday, March 15, 2018, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and/or Saturday, March 17 from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Forest Supervisor’s office, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, California 96150.

The 20th annual Earth Day Restoration and Cleanup is taking place at 40 parks up and down the state of California on Saturday, April 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The closest park with a project the public can work on is Grover Hot Springs.

Work there will be to continue maintenance of, and improvements to, the Native Plant Demonstration Garden including irrigation and weed removal, Grover Meadow invasive weed removal and landscape enhancements such as trash pickup, raking, clearing fire rings.

A new group of local volunteers graduated from the South Tahoe Action Team (STAT) program during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting.

There were 16 citizens participate in this session of the STAT training.

After the success of last year's Dinner Theater, Lake Tahoe Golf Course has partnered with the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe to bring another adult farce to the community, Divorce Southern Style by Jennifer Jarrett. On March 23 and April 6 there will be 3-course, handcrafted meal served in the beautiful Lake Tahoe Golf Course Clubhouse on March 23 and April 6.

If you are a parent looking for child care, you have probably encountered some challenges. There is currently a shortage of child care slots in El Dorado County. Many child care facilities who offer care are full and have waiting lists. This situation is very frustrating for parents and their employers. In order to work, parents are forced to juggle child care between friends, neighbors, and family members which can often be inconsistent and unreliable. Parents may also be forced to consider a child care situation of questionable quality.

Residents are invited to become involved as Placer County develops a Sustainability Plan which will outline ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and manage climate risks that threaten property value, natural resources and Placer quality of life

There will be two community workshops in March where the public can learn about the plan’s purpose and goals and how to become involved in the planning process.

Mountaintop cameras from the University of Nevada, Reno spotted or tracked 240 fires in Nevada and California in 2017. This helped to keep firefighters more situationally aware and able to mount appropriate responses more rapidly over tens of thousands of square miles of forests and rangelands, including rural communities.

This is a new and expanding tool for fire managers who oversee the wildland and wildland/urban interface.

Members of the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes local, state and federal agencies, will continue prescribed fire operations this week in multiple locations around the Tahoe Basin, weather permitting. North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California Tahoe Conservancy and U.S.

Volunteers are desperately needed for two upcoming student science events: The 2018 Science Expo March 12-16 in Incline Village and SLT Science Expo April 3-6 in South Lake Tahoe.

All science activities will be ready to go and minimal training is required, This year's activities focus on Life Science, Health and Nutrition, and include activities focused on the topics of organisms and ecosystems, inheritance and adaptation, and health and nutrition.

Seven delegates from the Republic of the Union of Myanmar stopped by Lake Tahoe last week to learn about the Forest Service’s role in natural resource management in the Tahoe Basin.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management (LTBMU) hosted the group and took them on a field trip to see recent forest thinning operations near Pope Beach and Emerald Bay.

Snowmobilers are being asked to move to areas with adequate snow coverage for their activities and to stay away from bare dirt and patchy snow areas.

With the snowpack in the Sierra at very low levels, and in anticipation of a busy holiday weekend, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) are informing snowmobile operators to also not ride across streams or over small trees or brush. Operating snowmobiles on too little snow creates ruts in the soil and crushes vegetation.

Adele, a Spinone Italiano show dog owned by Carson City Deputy Director of Emergency Management Stacey Belt, won best dog out of 12 in her breed Tuesday at the prestigious Westminster Dog Show in New York City.

“We are surrounded by incredibly beautiful dogs and very dedicated owners and handlers," said Belt. “The entire city is so welcoming.”

Bread & Broth really appreciates the support the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club has been giving our Adopt-A-Day of Nourishment (AAD) program. The Rotary Club signed up for five Adopt-A-Days and on February 5, they sent another great team to volunteer while hosting their fourth AAD in the past seven months. Representing the Rotary Club at the Monday Meal dinner were Rotarians Linda Bellotti, Keith Endlich, Bob Fehskens, Greg Felton, Roberta Stillwell and Brian Williams.

Friday marked the return of the PAC 8 college hockey championship to the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena. Last year's champion, the UCLA Bruins, return to defend their title.

Along with the Bruins, hitting the ice this weekend will also be Cal Berkeley, University of Washington, University of Oregon, UCLA and Arizona State.

In the early match up Friday, defending champs #4 UCLA Bruins lost to #5 ranked team, the USC Trojans. The score ended up at 4-3.

At 4:00 p.m., the #3 Washington Huskies and the #6 Oregon Ducks met on the ice with the Huskies winning 6-3.

The 2018 Amgen Tour of California has announced their race routes, giving cycling fans time to plot our their roadside viewing points.

The Women's Stage 2 and Men’s Stage 6 at South Lake Tahoe will both include iconic vistas, stunning lake views, highest summit in race history at Luther Pass, and the grueling Daggett Pass along Kingsbury Grade state Route 207 on May 18.

The U.S. Forest Service has released their draft decision for proposed improvements to existing skiing and snowboarding terrain at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Much of the work will be done on runs outside of the Lake Tahoe Basin boundary.

Those proposed improvements would include selective widening of ski trails, removing trail obstacles and relocation and/or realignment of some portions of existing snowmaking air and water pipelines to improve user experience, maintain user safety, increase energy and water efficiency, and maintain native species.
