Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe celebrates 30 years on the South Shore

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe celebrated 30 years of providing services to children and their families on the South Shore with a big party on Friday.

The Angel of Tahoe, Lisa Maloff, joined founding board members of the club, staff and children to celebrate with a combined summer party and birthday party. There were large inflatable slides and bounce houses, a magic show from Alex Ramon, and of course, cake.

National Night Out event in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is partnering with area first responders to host the National Night Out 2021 event on Tuesday, August 3.

This year's National Night Out will be held at the Blue Zone Sports parking lot at the Y from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

There will be food, games, activities, a mobile vaccine clinic, resources, and various first responder vehicles. This is a family-friendly event and a great chance to connect with our local first responders.

Tahoe Womens Community Fund Non-Profit Mixer along Ski Run Boulevard

Tahoe Women's Community Fund is putting on the first ever Non-Profit Market Mixer on Thursday, August 26 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This is a free event that will allow you to mix with your friends and neighbors and learn about some of the great non-profits in our community.

This farmer's-market style evening will feature almost 40 non-profits who will be set up on Ski Run Boulevard to showcase themselves to any interested community member.

There will be limited non-alcoholic drinks for purchase.

Thank you firefighters

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - With firefighters getting a handle on the Tamarack Fire that burned in Alpine, Lyon, and Douglas counties, members of the community are showing their support with "thank you" signs.

Douglas High School in Minden, Nev., was the command center for the fire. People came out with over 50 signs and banners to express their thanks to the fire crews working on the fire which is now 68,103 acres in size and 54 percent contained.

The food truck sets up in the parking lot of St. Theresa Catholic Church at 1041 Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. They bring fresh fruits and vegetables.

Chautauqua and author launch August events at Dangberg Historic Park

On Wednesday, August 4, at 6:30 pm, Chautauquan Kim Harris will present “Calamity Jane: Heroine of the Plains”.

Perhaps no woman embodies the spirit of the Western expansion more than Martha Jane Canary better known as “Calamity Jane”. She challenged society’s standards of behavior for women, and at the same time was admired for her generosity, honesty and lack of pretentiousness.

Tahoe Art's Project's Music on the Beach returns

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Arts Project's Music on the Beach fundraiser is back! This year it will be held on Thursday, August 19 at Lakeshore Lodge and Spa. Niall McGuiness, the New World Project and the Wesley Orsolic Band will perform on the scenic shores of Lake Tahoe.

The doors open at 6:00 p.m., music from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. A suggested donation of $20 covers entry and one raffle ticket. Bring low back chairs, food and drink.

All proceeds benefit arts education to the children in the community.

Next Coffee with the Mayor to focus on fire safety, emergency preparedness

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The second Coffee with the Mayor will be held on Wednesday, July 28 at 9:00 a.m. at Fire Station #2.

Mayor Wallace will join South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Chief Clive Savacool and other local and federal agency representatives to discuss wildfire preparedness, defensible space and Reverse 911 notification systems.

The public is invited.

Go Fund Me account set up for Markleeville family who lost everything in Tamarack Fire

During the afternoon of July 16, with the Tamarack Fire growing quickly and bearing down on their neighborhood, Chris and Marshauna Mikelionis and their two young children packed up in the car and fled.

The following morning they saw a video of the fire on television and found out the hard way that they lost their home, its contents, and a vehicle to the Tamarack fire.

Chris is a Tahoe area musician who supports his family playing music. He has lost the majority of his instruments.

Almost 39,000 miles logged as community rallies together for 16th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge

STATELINE, Nev. – During the month of June, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition teamed up to lead the 16th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge. This year, over 300 Tahoe residents and visitors took the challenge and biked 38,955 miles, a distance equivalent to traveling from Tahoe to San Francisco and back 100 times.

465 Tahoe kids participating in Lift Literature Summer Reading Challenge

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The inaugural Lift Literature Summer Reading Challenge is underway with 465 Tahoe kids signed up to reading as many minutes as possible this summer.

• 168 Elementary/Preschool students
• 150 Middle School students
• 27 High School students
• 120 students attending the Boys & Girls Club Summer Program

This school year set many students behind in reading, so Lift Literature hopes this challenge will help families prioritize reading at home.

AYSO Soccer Fun Night in South Lake Tahoe

Volunteers remove nearly 1,500 pounds of trash from Lake Tahoe beaches

For years volunteers have joined beach clean-up efforts for the day after the 4th of July fireworks. With no displays over the lake this year, the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s annual July 5 Keep Tahoe Red, White and Blue Beach Cleanup still took place.

Tahoe’s beaches were still blanketed in morning shadows when volunteers began plucking cigarette butts, bottle caps and beach toys out of the sand early on July 5. By noon, 235 enthusiastic volunteers had removed 1,456 pounds of litter from ten Tahoe beaches and their surrounding areas.

Lake Tahoe History Talks on the beach each Tuesday this summer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe and the Lake Tahoe Historical Society have teamed together to bring weekly history talks to the beach this summer!

Every Tuesday during the months of July and August, join them at Lakeview Commons for an hour filled with Lake Tahoe history fun, presented by long-time locals, authors, and historical characters. The events are free but donations are accepted, and some of the speakers might have books available for purchase. These programs are for all ages and Tahoe Tessie's Beach Bites will be open late for this event.

Rotary Mobility program recycles unused equipment

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Find yourself in need of crutches but can't find any around Lake Tahoe? Having hip surgery and need a walker for a couple of months? How about a wheelchair? A Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe project is connecting unused mobility equipment to those who need them.

The program, called Rotary Mobility, has been up and running for six months, but in that short time the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe has served 41 people through their new program with 61 mobility items. The costs saved by those served, $6,700.

Tahoe Fund receives nearly $300K from guests at Vail Resorts through $1 donation program

In just 24 months, Vail Resorts has raised nearly $300,000 for the Tahoe Fund in support of new trails and environmental stewardship projects in the Tahoe Basin. A partner of the nonprofit since its inception, Vail Resorts has raised funds to support projects spearheaded by the Tahoe Fund through its $1 for Tahoe guest donation program—part of the company’s EpicPromise community impact program.

Friends of Ski Run holding fundraiser for new park in South Lake Tahoe

The Friends of Ski Run will be holding an outdoor show on Friday, July 2 to help raise money for the new Ski Run Park. The show will feature climber Timmy O'Neill and musician Robin Orr.

O'Neill is not only a climber but also a comedian. Timmy is a hilarious climber, presenter, and new South Lake local and will share stories from the first blind ascent of Ama Dablam with dear friend Erik Wiehenmayer, blind climber and adventurer.

He will be joined by the local super-talented Robin Orr and her band, (Timmy plays drums!) for live music before and after the show.

South Lake Tahoe 911 dispatcher helps dad deliver his baby

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As many mothers will tell you, 20 minutes isn't very long from the time a woman's water breaks to the time her baby is born. That is exactly what happened in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, June 23.

911 dispatcher Rachel Carlson answered a call that night from Theodore Tofanelli. His girlfriend had gone into labor in their Sierra Vista apartment at the "Y" in South Lake Tahoe and there was no time to get her to the hospital.

Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation awards South Tahoe High student mentors

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Twenty South Tahoe High School students who served as mentors in the inaugural "Connect, Engage, Succeed" program this school year were awarded $12,500 in scholarships from the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation (LTEF).

LTEF partnered with the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) to identify and train volunteer high school coaches/mentors and match them with elementary and middle school students who were struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic distance learning format.

Incline Village to host 4th of July weekend full of activities including Local Heroes Parade

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The fireworks may be canceled but the 4th of July holiday spirit on the North Shore has not been. Incline Village and Crystal Bay Association (IVCBA) has brought the community together for the first-ever “Local Heroes” Fourth of July Parade. Businesses will be adding in the jam-packed holiday weekend full of festivities for all ages.

Life jackets being collected at area Coldwell Banker Select offices

Coldwell Banker Select offices around Lake Tahoe and the surrounding area are collecting life jackets until June 24. They have a goal of collecting 2,000 jackets that they can hand out before the 4th of July weekend.

A lack of a life jacket has put many swimmers, boaters, and water recreationists in danger of cold water shock and drowning.

Lucky Beaver staff donates $20,000 to Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (TWC), the local non-profit tasked with taking care of Lake Tahoe's injured, sick, and orphaned animals, has received a donation from the staff at Stateline's Lucky Beaver Bar and Grill.

Knowing the group is important to the area, the staff knew they wanted to make a difference and pulled together to personally donate over $20,000 to TWC over the last month.

It is a tremendous relief that COVID-19 cases are waning, more folks are returning to work, and California is opening up and relaxing pandemic restrictions. Barton Health holds free bereavement camp for kids this summer

Local children are invited to participate in the annual Camp Sunrise. Camp Sunrise is a children’s bereavement camp, serving children ages 7 to 14, who have experienced the death of a loved one. The overnight grief camp takes place Friday to Sunday, August 13 to 15, at Galilee Camp and Retreat Center in Glenbrook, Nevada.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lovin’ Lake Tahoe and Lift Literature have joined forces to help kids in Tahoe gain a sense of wonder, awe, and imagination every time they pick up a book. The pandemic was extremely difficult on students and set many of them back when it comes to reading. This school year posed so many challenges to students and many are facing more disadvantages than ever.

Lift Literature believes that it’s time to create a movement to transform how kids on the South Shore engage in reading.

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra gives all South Shore students K-8 a book for the summer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For over 20 years the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) has given books to students at schools in Zephyr Cove and the Lake Tahoe Unified Schoo District (LTUSD), and 2021 is no different.

Co-chairs of the program, Cookie Rork and Laurie Brazil, ordered 2,700 books in Spanish and English to distribute to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The books are for the children to keep and either start or add to their own personal collection.

3rd annual Carson Valley Days 5K Fun Run results

The 3rd annual Carson Valley Days 5K, hosted by nonprofit Tahoe Youth & Family Services, took place prior to the start of the parade on June 12, 2021.

Weather was perfect for the event. Runners, joggers, and walkers heard cheers and cowbells ringing as they approached the finish line. Even though this was a self-timed event, volunteers noted bib numbers as participants crossed the finish line.

The unofficial male and female first place winners in four age categories are as follows:

Our last leg of our trifecta and our first in-person live event has ended with many decked out in Star War’s garb. This was a FUN opportunity for us to celebrate those in recovery due to substance abuse or mental health challenges while being active during this very challenging and difficult year! It is with much appreciation I want to thank all our participants who participated in this month’s Moving for Recovery Event and for those who attended all three of our Recovery events either virtually or in person. Bread & Broth 4 Kids starts summer food program June 23

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 2021 St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) summer program begins June 23 and will continue every Wednesday through August 25 in South Lake Tahoe.

Food will be distributed at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church- Grace Hall at 1041 Lyons Avenue from 10:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Any child up to the age of 18 can come alone or with a parent or legal guardian to pick up a bag of free, nutritious food.

Historic Dangberg Ranch volunteer opportunities

Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park is looking for volunteers interested in helping with seasonal events, gardening, and to be ranch house docents.

The park’s 2021 Summer Festival features a kite flying weekend, concerts, Chautauquas, and guest speakers. Assisting during these events allows volunteers to enjoy events free of charge.

Gertrude’s Garden and flower beds surrounding the park’s historic buildings are always in need of attention as the seasonal flowers grow and bloom.

Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe reopens doors to public at both locations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is officially reopening its doors on June 17 at both locations - Truckee and South Lake Tahoe. Public hours have been limited due to the pandemic but things will be back in full swing.

The summer season is officially underway in Carson Valley this week as the community celebrates its 111th annual Carson Valley Days packed with daily activities for the whole family.

Maddie’s Pet Project of Nevada has announced Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days happening Friday, June 11, and Saturday, June 12, 2021. Thanks to funding provided by the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation, all adoption fees are being waived for dogs and cats at participating animal welfare organizations across Nevada during this event.

More than 7,600 animals have found their forever homes during this event in the past three years. This year, 50 Nevada animal welfare organizations, including both large and small animal shelters and private rescue groups, will be a part of it!
