Lake Tahoe course explores underpinnings of hate and how to respond to rising antisemitism

This fall, Rabbi Mordey Richler from Chabad at Lake Tahoe will offer a new four-session course from the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), titled Outsmarting Antisemitism.

Using history, Talmudic sources, Jewish mysticism, and contemporary expert analysis, the course addresses some of the niggling questions we grapple with as individuals and as a community. Why does antisemitism persist? How can we make hate go away? How can we counter Israel-focused antisemitism and prevent our own youth from unwittingly lending their voices to antisemitic agendas?

Tahoe Youth and Family Services executive director announces retirement

Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) Executive Director Karen Carey has announced her retirement effective January 31, 2022. She brought many years of experience with her when she joined the non-profit after retiring as the executive director with Tahoe Safe Alliance and has been a valued leader of the organization since 2018.

“It has been an honor to be the executive director of Tahoe Youth & Family Services. Its mission is critical to our community and to the lives of so many children, youth, adults, and families,” said Carey.

LTUSD homeless advocacy program accepting winter clothing donations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With winter on its way, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) wants to ensure the students in its homeless advocacy program can enjoy playing in the snow this year.

The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe, the El Dorado County Office of Education, and other organizations already help students with winter coats and LTUSD is looking to supplement those donations with new or used snow boots, new gloves, hats, bibbed overalls, earmuffs, and snow pants.

Large book sale at South Lake Tahoe Library - $5 a bag returns

The Friends of the Library (FOL) Used Book Sale will be held on Saturday, October 30, in the Community Room of the library from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Their goal is to move out the many books, CDs, DVDs and magazines generously donated by the community. For $5 a bag, you can give them a new home! A special table of collections and unusual books will be offered as “make a deal” with the cashier. All the books in the lobby honor bookcases are included in the $5 a bag purchase. El Dorado County Food Bank brings free mobile farmer's market to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Food Bank of El Dorado County and California Emergency FoodLink have partnered with Bread & Broth for the next free drive-thru food distribution on Wednesday, October 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

They will be distributing fresh produce and non-perishable food items in the parking lot of St. Theresa Church at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Fund supports another season of SOS Outreach

The Tahoe Fund has announced it will continue to support SOS Outreach with a grant that will expand the outdoor youth program’s impact in Lake Tahoe. The nonprofit provides opportunities for underserved youth to experience the outdoors while participating in a mentorship program that is designed to prepare them for life’s challenges.

The impactful program has served more than 585 kids as they learn to ski and snowboard, learn leadership skills, and learn the importance of protecting the environment through service projects each year.

Opening on El Dorado County Community Action Council

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Community Action Council currently has a member vacancy within the Community Sector Membership category. The Community Action Council is seeking to fill the vacancy with an individual or agency to represent the interests and concerns of people and families with low incomes living in El Dorado County, with a special focus on housing, nutrition, and low-income program needs. Priority will be given to representatives of community organizations that demonstrate a commitment to advancing the purposes and activities of the Council.

Five locals appointed to newly created Arts, Culture and Tourism Commission

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its meeting Tuesday, the South Lake Tahoe City Council appointed the first five voting members of the new Art, Culture and Tourism Commission.

The commission was established via resolution on August 20. Interested members of the community were asked to apply and seven applications were received. The City sought to have applications from youth and for a spot for a non-voting member from the South Lake Tahoe Tourism Improvement District or Lake Tahoe Lodging Association. None were received from these segments.

The Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids (TASK) is a local coalition created to address issues facing students, parents, and families in the community and schools.

One strategy, the Parent Group Texting Network (PGTN), is a one-way texting system that provides parents with the most comprehensive and timely information about substances being introduced in their youngsters' lives every day.

Halloween Happenings map - Lake Tahoe Historical Society creates map of decorated homes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the second consecutive year, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society has published a printable map that shows many South Lake Tahoe area homes that are decorated for Halloween. The map was so popular in 2020 that it was created again.

Museum volunteer Anita Limbird drove around the community at night, noting decorated homes to put on the map. Check out the creativity from your neighbors by walking or driving by.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary holds "Pints for Polio" Day at Fox and Hound

STATELINE, Nev. - World Polio Day is on October 24, a day around the world where Rotary clubs join together with global health experts and partners to share their progress on the road to polio eradication.

Tahoe Fund meets campaign goal for new Tunnel Creek singletrack

The Tahoe Fund has announced that it has met and exceeded its campaign goal of raising $50,000 for a new Tunnel Creek Singletrack thanks to individual donors, a major gift from the Verstappen Family Foundation and a match by the Spaht family. Once built, the trail will be a 2.3-mile multi-use trail that will provide users with a new alternative when accessing the Marlette Flume Trail, the Incline Flume Trail and the Tahoe Rim Trail.

The fourth annual Burgers for Badges fundraiser to support the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office raised $15,000. The money was presented to Sheriff Coverley and will go toward the department’s operations and specialty programs.

The El Dorado Community Foundation announces Caldor Fire recovery grants for nonprofits

The El Dorado Community Foundation has announced the opening of the Caldor Fire Recovery Grant Application for nonprofits. This grant is open to all nonprofits serving El Dorado County who are specifically working to help residents and communities recover from the losses and trauma of the Caldor Fire.  



The Foundation challenges all to think creatively and outside the lane normally occupied by program services, to address any one of the topics below:
• Housing
• Childhood development and wellness
• Youth Development
• Organizational development of emerging community organizations

Lake Tahoe non-profits receive $85,000 from American Century Championship

Another $85,000 was given to 19 Lake Tahoe area non-profits by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) and American Century Championship on Thursday. The money comes from the 2021 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe in July.

Normally an in-person check presentation event, this year's awardees were announced during a virtual meeting of the LTVA board.

El Dorado County Fire donates training gear to Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at LTCC

El Dorado County Fire Protection District (EDCFPD) has donated dozens of sets of turnout gear to students at the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at Lake Tahoe Community College. The firefighting gear will provide realistic training equipment for fire academy students to wear while they learn the hands-on skills necessary to be firefighters.

Even though the donated gear has lived out a full service life with EDCFPD, the college students in the academy will be able to use the turnouts as they train to be firefighters.

Community supports Tamarack Turnaround with $80,000 to disperse to those affected by Tamarack Fire

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – Partnership Douglas County and Tamarack Turnaround have been disbursing over $80,000 to individuals and families whose homes were destroyed and were displaced as a result of the Tamarack Fire.

During the fire, a group of local residents and members of the business community established Tamarack Turnaround after recognizing a need to connect victims of the fire to the hundreds of individuals wanting to help by donating money. At the time, Douglas County did not have a vetted process nor a designated nonprofit formalized to offer monetary donation management.

Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation gives $3M to agencies helping animals and humans affected by wildfires

During the month of October, Flatstick Pub will donate $5 for every Oktoberfest stein deal purchased to the California Wildfire Relief Fund. The $25 deal includes a commemorative beer stein, local Oktoberfest beer and a pub pretzel.

Captain's Corner Tahoe event Sunday to raise funds for Sierra-at-Tahoe staff and programs

Halloween Pumpkin Run part of Lake Tahoe Marathon; Volunteers needed for event

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Optimist Club and the Lake Tahoe Marathon are hosting free pumpkin runs for ages 1-10 on Halloween at Lakeside Beach starting at 10:00 a.m.

The pumpkin runs are part of the Lake Tahoe Marathon.

"Beer Relief" to celebrate first responders and support Sierra-at-Tahoe employees and programs

The Hangar of South Lake Tahoe is throwing a party on Saturday, October 9 to not only raise funds for Sierra staff and programs, but to celebrate first responders who fought the Caldor Fire and protected the community.

Guild Mortgage's South Lake Tahoe office contributes $10,000 to Caldor relief fund

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Community Disaster Resource Center (CDRC) got a big burst of funds Thursday with a $10,000 donation from Guild Mortgage of South Lake Tahoe.

CDRC was formed during the Angora Fire to help those who had lost their homes, and now they've come back together again to help those whose wages were impacted due to evacuation from the Caldor Fire.

WWII Veteran Garfield Ware to be honored in South Lake Tahoe ceremony

Christmas Valley Pumpkin Patch to raise funds for those who lost homes in Caldor and Tamarack Fires

The Celio Family is opening their historic ranch for the Christmas Valley Pumpkin Patch on October 16 and 17 to raise funds for families who lost their homes in the Caldor and Tamarack Fires.

Flames came near the ranch, but it was saved and now the Celios are inviting the community out for two days of fun and "fun"raising from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.

There will be a pumpkin patch, corn stock maze, petting zoo, arts and crafts, raffle, live music, food and more with all proceeds going to the Community Disaster Resource Center - Lake Tahoe, a 501(c)3.

National Coffee With A Cop Day at Cuppa Tahoe October 6

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, members of the California Highway Patrol South Lake Tahoe office, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Sheriff, and community members will come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, have coffee, and build relationships.

All community members are invited to attend. The event goes from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on October 6 at Cuppa Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe.
