SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The entire community is invited to a free Open House at Lake Tahoe Community College’s Lisa Maloff University Center (LMUC) on Thursday, September 12 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Take a tour of the new University Center, meet with LTCC’s academic partners who are providing affordable advanced degrees, and explore the many eye-catching works of art now housed in the LMUC created by local artist Scott Forrest. Light refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Highway 50 over Echo Summit may close up to 14 days this September to allow the Caltrans contractor to install new girders and demolition work on the existing bridge structure.

There will be two meetings to inform the public of the potential closure and detour (see attached map). Local residents and businesses will be issued passes to use Johnson Pass Road as a detour during the closure, which if in place would be toward the end of the month. More information on that will be provided at the meetings and not before.

STATELINE, Nev. - The 30th annual American Century Championship has gone into the record books as one of the biggest and best golf events in Lake Tahoe history. There was an attendance record of 60,550, an economic impact estimated at $30 million for the Lake Tahoe Basin, and now an additional $100,000 will be given away to South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Township non-profits.

When is low-income housing developed by a Transportation Agency? This seemingly simple question is looming before our City Council and has been pushed back to the next City Council meeting. It is, in fact, the first domino in the efforts of the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) to move forward with the Loop Road II Project.

“It was a wonderful experience meeting all of the Bread & Broth volunteers and members of the community attending the dinner,” shared Caroline Barichievich at Barton Orthopedic & Wellness Center’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) on August 5.

Caroline and her AAD sponsor crew members Amy Alcorn, Jason Collins, Jana Mortellaro and Heidi Siano arrived at 3:00 p.m. at St. Theresa Grace Hall ready to help provide an outstanding meal to the evening’s dinner guests.

Promoting power boating and sailing, and sharing the joy of being on beautiful Lake Tahoe, the South Lake Tahoe Windjammers Yacht Club is also committed to helping others in our community. This year, the club sponsored Bread & Broth’s (B&B) Monday Meal on July 29 and club members John Johnck, Steve Katzman, Diane Martin, Laura Rasmussen, and Carolyn Robinson crewed at the Club’s sponsorship dinner.

A record 246 people participated in the 36th Tahoe Tennis Classic at Zephyr Cove Park this past weekend. The four-day annual event brought people from throughout the United States to our area for competitive and fun tennis.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser for the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation. The nonprofit, all-volunteer organization has a contract with Douglas County to operate the six courts. Responsibilities include resurfacing the courts, managing play, and providing instruction for all ages and abilities.

Everyone in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community is invited to attend any of the weekly meals served by St. Theresa’s Bread & Broth organization in St. Theresa’s Grace Hall. The Monday Meal is a full-course, hot, nutritious dinner served from 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. and Friday’s Second Serving meal offers a simple entrée and soup served from 4 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Douglas County is actively recruiting volunteers to serve on a Complete Count Committee (CCC) for the 2020 Census. The CCC will be responsible for educating and encouraging residents to respond to the 2020 census.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bread & Broth is putting the "fun" back into fundraising and bringing back their unique Burlap & Denim BBQ and Ranch Tour on Saturday, August 24 from noon to 4:00 p.m.

The Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) mission is uniting Tahoe’s communities to strengthen regional prosperity. TPC provides regional solutions to regional needs on behalf of the communities that make up the Lake Tahoe region. One of those critical issues is a lack of housing for local workers. This negatively impacts businesses trying to hire workers and local residents who want to live, work and play in Lake Tahoe. Many workers in our Tourism driven economy find themselves unable to afford a home or apartment.

1. CLEAR BAG POLICY

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lower Lakeside Park near Stateline will be closed to non-permitted and non-emergency vehicles on the 4th of July from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. in order to keep people walking in the area safe from high volumes of holiday traffic.

The popular private beach near the firework barges is accessible by Lakeside Park Association members and pass holders (may enter at 8:00 a.m.). Passes are available for purchase for $20 for the day (may enter at 9:00 a.m.). These passes do not allow parking and are for beach access only.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Tourism Improvement District (SLTTID) expires at the end of this year and City Council has started the process to renew it for another ten years. The district was originally created in 2006 to secure a stable funding source for tourism promotion and community marketing through self-imposed fees.

Update 4:30pm: Highway 50 has reopened.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A crew working on the new Highway 50 project struck a gas line Tuesday at 2:44 p.m., prompting evacuations of businesses at 2717 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has two engines and a battalion chief at the scene, and as of 3:30 p.m. they are waiting for Liberty Utilities to arrive to shut off the power. According to SLTFR Battalion Chief Karl Koeppen, there is a large electrical box adjacent to the gas line and they wanted power clamped off before addressing the gas issue.

The South Tahoe Association of REALTORS® partnered with Vitalant, previously
United Blood Services, to host a Blood Drive on Monday, June 17. This event was open to the public. Realtors® and members of the community made appointments and dropped in to donate. There was a total of 22 donors, translating into 66 lives that can be saved.

“This is something that really only takes minutes of your time and is free to give. I’m happy to donate each year and glad to know that it will impact someone’s life in a positive way,” said Kili Ongoy, Chair of the Community Involvement Committee.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council voted Tuesday to give SnowGlobe a new five-year contract with the criteria that organizers must be working on locating a new location for the event at the end of two years.

If they do not have a good plan in place after those first two years the City could terminate the contract.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A third company has filed an appeal with the City of South Lake Tahoe, questioning the scoring they received from the committee selected to rate the applications.

Have a Heart South Lake Tahoe joins MedMen and South Tahoe Cannabis in filing appeals. A fourth, The New Green Deal, did not get the completed document with the $363 appeal fee into the City in time though he said he has hired an attorney.

There’s been recent talk about the US 50 Community Revitalization Project (AKA the Loop Road), and I applaud the City of South Lake Tahoe for taking an active role in listening to the community as the planning phase of the project begins. There are a lot of significant concerns, which is normal with a project of this scope. That said, the 'us vs. them' mentality that many residents use as a reason to avoid this project is frustrating and potentially damaging to our community.

There is a Special Runoff Election on June 4, 2019 scheduled to fill a vacancy in Senate District 1. All currently registered voters in the County of El Dorado are eligible to participate.

When Ted Gaines won a seat on the California Board of Equalization in November, the Senate District 1 seat he had held since 2011 was up for grabs. In March there was an election to decide his replacement, but since no candidate won more than 50 percent of the vote the top two are now on Tuesday's ballot.

For more than a decade, attorney Scott Norris Johnson has made it his business to sue thousands of small business owners around Lake Tahoe and up and down the state over alleged violations of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).

Today he finds himself in hot water after a federal grand jury returned an indictment today against the Carmichael resident, charging him with three counts of making and subscribing a false tax return.

Update May 19 9:00 a.m.: The 65-year-old driver who verred off Lake Tahoe Boulevard on Saturday suffered a medical episode according to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. The unidentified South Lake Tahoe man was transported to Barton Hospital with minor injuries from the crash.

Update 1:15 p.m.: One person was transported to the hospital after they left the roadway and ended up hitting two parked cars and a building Saturday morning. The driver was transported with unknown injuries.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Celebrate creativity along Ski Run Boulevard on Sunday, June 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the inaugural Tahoe ArtFest.

The Tahoe Arts Alliance is bringing the event to South Lake Tahoe with visual and performing arts, films, chalk art, and a Battle of the Bands, all in one day.
