South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue honors staff

Chief Jeff Meston and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) held their annual awards ceremony on Friday January 29, 2016 to celebrate the department's teams members and accomplishments for the past year.

During the ceremony, the following people were honored:

Dispatcher of the Year – Linda Clark
STAT Volunteer of the Year – Leonard Smith

New Douglas County Sheriff's deputy sworn in

ouglas County Sheriff Ron Pierini has announced the appointment of Bryan Veil as the newest Douglas County Deputy Sheriff. Veil was sworn in on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 in a ceremony held at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Minden, Nevada.

The appointment comes as a result of several months of testing and evaluation consisting of a physical agility test, oral interview, extensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and medical exam.

Stretch of Carson City Freeway officially named in honor of Deputy Carl Howell

Officials on Tuesday unveiled a nine-mile stretch of the Carson City freeway in honor of Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy Carl Howell who died in the line of duty August 15, 2015.

The ceremony Tuesday at the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on the state capitol grounds featured remarks from Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, Nevada Department of Transportation Director Rudy Malfabon, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, Mayor Bob Crowell and Kevin Howell, father of Carl Howell.

Remember loved ones at "Light up a Life"

New Douglas County Deputy Sheriff sworn in

Sheriff Ron Pierini announced his department's newest deputy Monday. Derek Short was sworn in as a Douglas County Deputy Sheriff during a ceremony at their office in Minden, Nev.

Derek Short graduated from Southern Oregon University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and a minor in Criminal Justice. He will start his career with DCSO in the Jail Division.

Lake Tahoe businesses and employees honored at Blue Ribbon Awards

The winners for the 8th annual Blue Ribbon Awards were announced Thursday night to a sold out dinner and ceremony at Montbleu Resort Casino and Spa. 300 community members attended to celebrate the winners of seven awards that honor exceptional South Shore businesses for their excellence in service, entrepreneurship, tourism and experience.

Gardnerville restaurateur celebrates expansion to the South Shore

Next generation of firefighters training in South Lake Tahoe

Some have jobs. Some have families. Some are recent high school graduates. Some are retired military. Some are college graduates. They are all future firefighters.

One month into the new school year, 33 men and women are part of the tenth class of firefighters being trained at the Lake Tahoe Community College's program, the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy. This year's class started with 36 students, but some find out early on how physically demanding the program is and they find it isn't for them.

The Tahoe Chamber announced the nominations Tuesday for the 2015 Blue Ribbon Awards. There were 150 nominations received from the community for their annual awards program that recognizes exceptional South Shore businesses for excellence in service, entrepreneurship and experience among other areas.

Tahoe Valley Campground celebrates 40th anniversary with party

As the camping season of 2015 draws to an end, Tahoe Valley Campground will celebrate over 40 years in business with a Tahoe Chamber ribbon cutting ceremony, barbecue and horseshoe tournament on October 22 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The community is invited to attend.

Meyers connects to South Lake Tahoe with Class 1 bike trail

The final portion of the Class 1 bike trail network between Meyers and South Lake Tahoe was formally opened Wednesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Members of the El Dorado County project team were on hand along with current Area 5 Supervisor Sue Novasel and former Supervisor Norma Santiago. Partner agency staff were also there to celebrate the completion.

Big Brothers Big Sisters ribbon cutting at Tahoe Mountain Lab

Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Dorado County (BBBS) has served at-risk children since 1977, primarily on the Western Slope. On October 15, 2015, BBBS will be hosting a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to announce the expansion of their programs into South Lake Tahoe.

The ceremony will take place from 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Tahoe Mountain Lab located at 1048 Ski Run Blvd. The owners of Tahoe Mountain Lab, David and Jamie Orr, have generously donated the space to BBBS for meeting purposes. David was previously a “Little” and considers this an opportunity to “give back” to his community.

Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe breaks ground on South Shore

A ground breaking ceremony at Edgewood Tahoe brought out community and political leaders, all wanting the celebrate their new project, the Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe.

Rain brought the ceremony indoors, but spirits weren't dampened as people speaking at the ceremony highlighted the major impacts the new project on the state line will make on South Shore's economic and community revitalization, as well as important environmental and recreational enhancements in the area.

Crane topples over at Edgewood Tahoe construction site

Nobody was injured when a crane being operated at the new Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe toppled over on Wednesday afternoon.

The crane, owned by Connolly Crane out of Gardnerville, NV, was getting ready to move when the operator released the brake instead of the house lock according to Kelly Connolly, the owner of Connolly Crane.

Ribbon cutting ceremony for newest South Lake Tahoe bike path

The newest multi-use trail connecting Lake Tahoe Blvd and Highway 50 will officially open with a dedication ceremony at 3 p.m. on October 14.

District Five County Supervisor Sue Novasel, the communities of South Lake Tahoe and Meyers and the Transportation Division of the County of El Dorado's Community Development Agency invite all interested parties to a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the final connection of the Class 1 bicycle and multi-use path network connecting the communities of Meyers and South Lake Tahoe.

Hundreds turn out for Grand Opening of Bijou Bike Park

Long after the barbecue was over, long after the booths, announcers and crowds were gone, cyclists were still riding the new trails at the Bijou Bike Park as the sun was setting on Saturday night.

The Bijou Bike park was officially opened in a ceremony that followed the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th Anniversary parade.

After opening statements by park creators, City Council and the Mayor, Ted Wendell spoke to the crowd as the Bijou Bike Park was dedicated to his late brother Tom, who died in 2012.

Facts about Saturday's South Lake Tahoe 50th Anniversary Parade

More than 100 vehicles and floats will be in Saturday's parade that will be celebrating the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th anniversary. Along with the moving entries there will also be 500 people walking along the route.

Work to begin on the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence

The Robert Maloff Center of Excellence plans have been approved, and construction preparation for the parking garage will begin this month.

The Center of Excellence will expand orthopedic, sports performance, and wellness services on the Barton Health campus. Individuals will work with a health navigator and a team of medical providers to develop and implement a customized care plan that integrates health, fitness, nutrition, and medical expertise.

Fireman and Police Detective wed in South Lake Tahoe on 9/11

The cameras were running in New York City on September 11, 2001 as two airplanes hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center, forever changing the lives of Americans. First responders lost their lives as they rushed to the scene of the disaster to help the injured, marking the day as a day of remembrance for firefighters and police officers.

Two first responders chose 9/11 to be married in South Lake Tahoe in a ceremony that united a Suisun City Police Detective with a Pennisula Fireman.

South Lake Tahoe remembers those who sacrificed their lives on 9-11

With flags lining the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe, the community bowed their heads and remembered those that lost their lives on the dark day, September 11, 2011.

Fourteen years ago 2,977 people died as terrorists hijacked four passenger planes, smashing two into the World Trade Center in New York. A third jetliner rammed into the Pentagon outside Washington while a fourth one crash-landed on an empty field in Pennsylvania.

Route for City's 50th Parade changed so it leads to "Party in the Park"

The route of the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th Anniversary Parade on Saturday, September 19 has changed direction so it will lead to Bijou Park for the grand opening of the Bijou Bike Park.

So far there are 85 entries in the parade along with over 300 walkers joining in the festivities. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the 'Y' and will proceed East on Highway 50, turn right onto Al Tahoe Blvd. and end at Bijou Community Park where the city will officially open and dedicate the Bijou Bike Park with a “Party at the Park.”

City history hunt wraps up Saturday; Historical Society launches new one

Now that history buffs have started the hunt with the City of South Lake Tahoe's week full of treasure, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society picks up the trail.

August 29 is the last day of the City's hunt. Maps can be picked up at any City facility including the Recreation Center, Explore Tahoe, the Campground by the Lake and Bijou Golf Course. The maps maps can also be downloaded. There will be a chance at prizes for those that complete the hunt.

New Zealand team wins 520 mile race through the Sierras

A multi-sport expedition that took participants from mountain top to mountain top, up rocks and into the lake and along rivers has wrapped up in South Lake Tahoe. Eleven teams with four members each spent the past several days running, biking, orienteering, mountain climbing, kayaking over 520 miles of some of the world's most beautiful terrain.

New bleachers at South Tahoe High ready for home opener, almost

The new half-million dollar bleachers at South Tahoe High should be ready for Friday night's home opener between the South Tahoe Vikings and the El Dorado Cougars.

While the press box is in, and the seats are ready, the perimeter of the stands was fenced off on Thursday afternoon. School officials on site at the time said "all should be ready to go by game time."

Summer rainstorms and state regulations for school bleachers held up the process which began right after June, 2015's graduation ceremony.

Local law enforcement in Carson City, Reno and Sacramento to honor fallen deputies

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department's Honor Guard took part in the funeral Thursday of Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell. Thousands of people lined the streets of the state capitol to honor Howell who was killed after responding to a domestic violence call on Saturday, August 15, 2015.

"Superheros are not always in comic books, they do exist in real life," said the fallen hero's father, Kevin Howell, at his son's funeral.

South Lake Tahoe K9 officers sworn in during ceremony

The South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting on Tuesday was taken over by the dogs. After Lisa Maloof handed over a check to cover the purchase and care for Ricci, three new canine officers for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) were sworn in.

Ricci, a 22-month-old Belgian Malinois from Holland, was joined by Tara, also a Belgian Malinois from Holland, and Quatro, a German Shepherd from Slovakia, as the newest members of SLTPD's K9 team.

South Lake Tahoe paddle boarders honor Deputy Francies

"Although he was off duty, Deputy Carlos Francies died doing what he was sworn to do: putting himself in harm's way to protect the life of another." Those were the words of Robin Bender as she spoke to the crowd gathered at El Dorado Beach and Lakeview Commons to remember Francies who drowned in Lake Tahoe on August 13.

Bender, the CFO of South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle, along with owner Chris Brackett, spoke, and Sammantha Bender sang as people with their paddle boards headed off shore to have a paddle-out, the surfing tradition that honors the life of a fallen comrade.

Lisa Maloff donates $141,000 for new South Lake Tahoe Police K9

Lisa Maloff has recently donated millions of dollars to the South Lake Tahoe community to help at the community college, hospital and other needed areas. She was honored during Tuesday's City Council meeting for her recent donation to purchase and train Ricci, the Police Department's newest K9 officer.

Dr. Kyle Swanson to be honored during Minden Airshow

Military veterans of all ages will be honored at the 5th Annual Aviation Roundup, August 22 and 23, 2015 at Minden-Tahoe Airport. Among those veterans being recognized is Dr. Kyle Swanson, an orthopedic surgeon with Tahoe Orthopedics & Sport Medicine in Carson City and Lake Tahoe. The Army veteran served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan where he performed surgeries on soldiers and Afghan civilians injured during the conflict of war.

Former Marine becomes newest Douglas County Deputy Sheriff

Ignatius Kyeremeh was sworn in as a Douglas County Deputy Sheriff on Monday, August 10 during a ceremony in Minden, NV.

Kyeremeh completed several months of testing and evaluation consisting of a physical agility test, oral interview, extensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and medical exam. He will begin his career with the department in the Jail Division.

Deputy Kyeremeh served in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years achieving the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He is married with 2 children.

Zephyr Fire Crew gets a permanent home

The Zephyr Fire Crew no longer has to call the old landfill on Upper Kingsbury Grade's Logging Road Lane as their home. The Tahoe Douglas Fire Department's wildland fire/fuels reduction team was officially welcomed into new digs with an open house this week. The Tahoe Chamber was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony, but it wasn't any normal ribbon. Zephyr Fire crew members cut through a wooden ribbon with a chainsaw.

The Thunderbirds coming to Minden-Tahoe Airport

The 5th Annual Aviation Roundup will be held on August 22 and 23 at the Minden-Tahoe Airport. The show will feature the US Air Force Thunderbirds, Team Rocket, Bill Stein, Kyle Franklin, Matt Younkin, Manfred Radius, and Dan Buchanan.

The performers will perform on both days, with the gates opening at 10:00 a.m. and Opening Ceremonies at 12:00 pm.

There will be no bleachers or seating available so lawn/beach chairs are encouraged.

Tahoe Douglas Zephyr Fire Crew celebrates new home with Open House

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District recently purchased new crew facility Station #22, which will act as quarters for the Tahoe Douglas Zephyr Crew. The public is invited to tour the new facility and celebrate the Tahoe Douglas Zephyr Crew on Tuesday, July 28 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tahoe Chamber will officiate a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care breaks ground on new home

Tom and Cheryl Millham have been operating Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) out of their home since 1978. Since then, they've treated over 22,000 animals, released over 14,000 rehabilitated animals back into the wild, have a volunteer crew of 2,000 people, and train 50 to 100 new volunteers annually.

Race the Lake of the Sky paddle board race this weekend

Lakeview Commons will be packed full of vendors, stand up paddle board racers, and excitement this weekend as South Tahoe Standup Paddle hosts the annual Race the Lake of the Sky.

This family friendly event attracts some of the world’s best athletes and has become known as the must attend flat water SUP race in the country.

The weekend races include a short course, long distance, team relay, grom races and the SUP Cross Sprint course as well as a race.

Local families present inaugural Rock Tahoe Half Marathon

The inaugural Rock Tahoe Half Marathon will bring approximately 5,000 people
including runners, friends, and family to South Lake Tahoe this weekend as they Run, Rock, and Recover in this one of a kind event.

On Saturday, June 20, 2,000 runners will take off along the 13.1-mile course from Spooner Summit and wind their way down Highway 50 along the East Shore of Lake Tahoe to the finish line at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe. The course will also take runners off the highway along the newly completed forest bike path from Round Hill Pines to Kahle Drive.

Douglas County businesses receive Spotlight Awards

Several South Shore businesses were among those honored during the 2nd Annual Douglas County Spotlight Awards. The Spotlight Awards recognize businesses in seven different categories: Retail, Restaurant, Manufacturing and Production, Sports and Recreation, Entrepreneur, Business and Professional Service, and Tourism and Hospitality.

The ceremony was held the County’s Financial State of the County event on Thursday, June 11.

Cooler temperatures; Chance of showers at end of week

South Tahoe High School will be holding their graduation ceremony outdoors on Friday, June 5 and, according to the U.S. Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are expected during the afternoon.

Tuesday - Sunny, with a high near 68. Light southwest wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.

Tuesday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 39. West wind 10 to 15 mph becoming light in the evening.

South Tahoe Middle School honors retirees with firemen led Flash Mob

Retiring South Tahoe Middle School Principal thought it was an assembly to honor the school's staff who are retiring. Words were said and plaques were given at the Wednesday morning ceremony. Then, the fire alarm sounded and hundreds of students and staff moved out onto the soccer field.
