The South Lake Tahoe celebration of Earth Day will be on Saturday, April 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Bijou Community Park. The North Shore will be holding theirs on April 22.
Earth Day South Lake Tahoe style features a full day of education on ways to counteract global climate change through recycling and composting, alternative energy, water conservation, sustainability, and reducing our ecological footprint. For over a decade, volunteers from the Tahoe Earth Day Foundation have put on the event for all ages.

Fifty four child care providers came together to enjoy breakfast, raffles generously donated by the South Lake Tahoe Community, and an inspiring presentation on Using Loose Parts (alluring objects that children can move, manipulate, control, and change within their play) to Support Language and Literacy Development.
Free LED light bulbs and energy audits offered by Liberty Utilities

Energy experts will be at the Liberty Utilities booth at these events providing customers with the most up-to-date information about ways they can reduce their energy consumption and, as a result, their energy costs.

South Tahoe Greenway one step closer to reality
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/18/2017 - 7:55pmA 3.86 mile shared used bike trail from Van Sickle Bi-State Park to Sierra Boulevard is getting closer to becoming reality after a Memo of Understanding (MOU) has been developed between its three partners.
The first phase of the South Tahoe Greenway Shared Use Trail was completed through the Bijou neighborhood in Summer, 2015, but the next phase needed a partnership between the City of South Lake Tahoe (City), Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) to be completed.

City officials still hope to make Knight's Inn and Ski Run corner project a reality
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/16/2016 - 9:29pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe is still trying to work out a deal with the Halferty Development Company, a $4 million sale of the developable portions of the lots known as the "Knights Inn Properties."
During Tuesday's City Council meeting a purchase agreement was scheduled to be voted on, but SLT City Manager Nancy Kerry had to pull it off the agenda.
"We are still working on it," Kerry told South Tahoe Now. "We are still negotiating and have some issues to work out."

The annual 4th of July parade in South Lake Tahoe has undergone changes and will be organized by the City of South Lake Tahoe this year.
In honor of the local American Legion Post 795, the parade will feature everyone, from vets to clubs, kids and organizations. The Legion will also serve as the parade marshals.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees, the City of South Lake Tahoe and the California Tahoe Conservancy will soon be voting to swap land they own around the college so the South Lake Tahoe Greenway Shared-Use Bike Trail can be built between Bijou Community Park and Sierra Tract neighborhood.
South Tahoe Greenway plans moving forward
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2015 - 10:17pmSometime in the future, one will be able to hop on a bike at Van Sickle Bi-State Park and travel on Class 1 trails to Sierra Tract, and hopefully beyond.
The concept for the trail where people would walk and bike safely off the main roads actually began in 1985. Caltrans owned land through the middle of neighborhoods where a highway was proposed, but when it was apparent that would never be built, the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) joined Caltrans in discussions to obtain the land.

Find your inner turkey and run like there's an oven warming up for you! It's time once again for the South Lake Tahoe Turkey Trot at Bijou Community Park on Saturday, November 21 at 10 a.m. There will be a 5k race as well as a Kid's Fun Run.
Thanksgiving themed costumes are optional, but it may be the only time all year dressing like a turkey is acceptable.
Prizes will be awarded for best race times.
Registration begins at 9am and races will begin at 10am. Save time and pre-register on line before the event on epictahoe.com.
Facts about Saturday's South Lake Tahoe 50th Anniversary Parade

So far there are 85 entries in the parade along with over 300 walkers joining in the festivities. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the 'Y' and will proceed East on Highway 50, turn right onto Al Tahoe Blvd. and end at Bijou Community Park where the city will officially open and dedicate the Bijou Bike Park with a “Party at the Park.”

Alex Fowler of Elite Trax, Inc has been in Rio de Janeiro building the track for the 2016 Summer Olympics, but he is much happier being in South Lake Tahoe creating what bicycle enthusiasts have been envisioning for year.

Things are moving forward quickly for the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District. The former maintenance person who lived at the park is gone, there are now special events planned, and a new employee is about to be hired.
There is a special meeting of the district's board of directors on Thursday night that will help form this summer's plans for the community park.
The meeting will be held at the park located at 1011 San Bernardino Avenue in Meyers at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 9.

Opening of Monument Peak Trail to be celebrated
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/08/2014 - 8:51pmThe Tahoe Area Biking Association (TAMBA) and the U.S. Forest Service are inviting the public to join them as they celebrate the grand opening of the Monument Pass Trail near South Lake Tahoe.
On October 12, bikers will start off at the Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe Blvd. at 9 a.m. Join the USFS Trail Crews on the 25 mile ride which will include 3500 feet of climbing (and decent).
The ride will go up Al Tahoe Blvd across Pioneer Trail to the Cold Creek Trail, up to Star Lake and Monument Peak, and back down.
Over 1,200 people attend Sample the Sierra in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/01/2014 - 6:38amWith blue skies and warm temperatures, many people were out enjoying everything there is to do in South Lake Tahoe this holiday weekend. Many events from a carnival to fireworks were held, giving people plenty to choose from.
One of these events was the 5th Annual Sample the Sierra Farm to Fork Festival. The main event was held at Bijou Community park on Sunday, with over 1,200 people enjoying food and drink from the region. There were 16 booths of local food, wine, beer and spirits as well as an artisan marketplace, live music and a cooking contest with a mystery box of ingredients.

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Tri Club have partnered to provide a series of three fun runs this Fall season including Tahoe’s Freakin’ Fun Run, Turkey Trot and Jingle Jog.
The 1st Annual “Tahoe’s Freakin’ Fun Run” will be held this Sunday, October 13th at Lake Tahoe Community College Playfields located at 1300 Al Tahoe Blvd. The Fun Run will begin at 10am and participants are encouraged to dress in Halloween attire with prizes for Best Costume and Most Ridiculous Costume being awarded.
Bijou Community Park is Revamped During 4th Annual Vail Resorts Echo Day
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/23/2013 - 1:05pmEmployees of Heavenly and Kirkwood Mountain resorts and their friends and family members teamed together for the 4th Annual Vail Resorts Echo Day on Sunday, September 21st. The 312 participants volunteered to revamp Bijou Community Park, putting in a combined effort of 936 volunteer hours Saturday. Volunteers laid sod to build a family picnic area, painted signs and picnic tables, planted shrubs, cleared bushes, redistributed wood chips, resurfaced the skate park, raked the volleyball courts, picked up trash, and cleaned up the bicycle path along Al Tahoe Boulevard.

It may not look like it today, but by Sunday the Bijou Dog Park Agility Course will have its grand opening. The official ribbon cutting ceremony will be at 1 pm on Sunday at Bijou Community Park.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association (SLTPCA) has worked for over a year to move this course from a dream into a reality.
Tahoe Tri Club Creates Three Reasons To Get Out and Run

The farmers’ market season begins Friday at Kahle Community Park in Stateline. This is the first market to open in the area. It will be one of three on the South Shore.

This new festival was crafted by Barton Health and the City of South Lake Tahoe to bring children, families and individuals together for health education and non-stop excitement.
Tahoe Derby Dames final home bout of the season on Saturday

This will be the last home bout of the season. The Dames Green Team will go against Merced's Grim Reap-Hers. TDD's Black Team will go against Reno's Battle Born Derby Demons. Gates open at 2 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs as seating is limited. Tickets $10 in Advance and $12 at the door.

Bands for Bikers Fundraiser
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 09/13/2012 - 8:48amA Bands for Bikers fundraiser will be at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd., beginning at 5 p.m. TAMBA and the SLT BMX Association, in conjunction with the Tahoe Basin Land Management Unit of the Forest Service will hold this fundraiser to build a pump track and mountain bike skills park at Bijou Community Park. Fundraiser includes bands, bmx bike demonstrations, silent auction, music and food.

Barton Health and the City of South Lake Tahoe have made a collaborative effort to combine Barton's Family Health Day and the Bijou Bash - two annual events created for our community and visitors alike. Emphasizing health, recreation and fun.
