South Lake Tahoe Celebrates the 4th of July

Communities across the country are celebrating America's Independence Day and South Lake Tahoe is no different.

Thousands of visitors have come to town to enjoy fireworks, BBQs and family fun. There are many ways to celebrate Friday:

Head out to watch the 3rd Annual Fourth of July Parade at 10 a.m. Cars, trucks and other vehicles will set out from Les Schwab Tires at the Y and head down Highway 50 to the American Legion where there will be a BBQ. Sit along the street (the best views are on the same side of the street as the parade will be moving).

The Rich History of South Lake Tahoe's Barton Ranch

Having recently read an article about the owners of the Barton Ranch property planning to tear down all the buildings as they rot and decay for the advancement of the Tahoe Valley Plan I felt I had to reply. Although I haven't read over that plan I am aware of the rich history of the Barton family who are clearly one of Lake Valley's founding families.

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

It's that time of year again. The county fair, full of funnel cakes, carnival rides, animals, music, exhibits, wheelbarrow races, wine and beer competition and good old fashioned fun.

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."

The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

The Crazy Club’s Open Mic Morning- Children's Story Time & Talent Contest

“Spring Into Summer” at South Lake Tahoe Recreation and Swim Complex

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Division is gearing up for another summer season full of adventure, learning, fun and great memories. The Recreation staff is geared up to host the second annual “Spring Into Summer” Kick- Off Party on June 7, 2014 from 10am to 2pm. The event is designed to highlight summer programs, introduce Recreation Instructors and provide tours of the Recreation and Swim Complex in a fun and festive environment.

Free Physicals for all South Tahoe High Athletes on Monday

There will be free physicals at the South Tahoe High Blue Gym for all perspective athletes and cheer/dance team squads. Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine will be conducting the physicals, which are required for all participants.

All that is required is completed paperwork at the time of the physical. Forms can be found at South Tahoe High, South Tahoe Middle School and the LTUSD offices.

South Lake Tahoe Seniors Celebrate Grand Reopening of Their Center

The South Lake Tahoe Senior Center celebrated the grand reopening of their full facilities on April 7 with a community party. City staff painted, reordered and reorganized the center so the seniors could once again enjoy their dance floor, library game room and offices.

South Lake Tahoe seniors have their center back, and there will be a grand re-opening party to welcome them back into their updated home.

The Senior Center,located at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd, received new paint, new carpet, and heavy cleaning in order for local seniors to be able to use the whole facility including the library, dance floor, offices and other areas formerly used by the county's Mental Health Department.

If the showroom overflowing with screaming and happy fans is any indication, the Tahoe Arts Project's Dancing with the Tahoe Stars was a success.

Ten couples performed numbers in front of a panel of judges: Marcia Sarosik, Paul Middlebrook and Don Bosson. MC Dreu Murin guided the evening of entertainment from the dancers to performances by Marcia Sarosik Dance Studio, South Tahoe High Performing Arts and Forever Dance.

Final rehearsals were underway Thursday evening in the MontBleu Showroom as professional dancers and their South Lake Tahoe "stars" prepared for Tahoe Art Project's Dancing with the Tahoe Stars.

Kingsbury Grade Closing to Through Traffic in May, September and October

A year and a half road construction project will result in the closure of Kingsbury Grade for almost 75 days this year and more in 2015. Since this will have an impact on local businesses, residents and commuters, a forum was held on Wednesday in order to inform the community about the impact.

A full house was on hand in the TahoeChamber conference room to listen to representatives from Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) and the road construction company.

South Tahoe High Alum Performs with UCLA Band on Premier of Amazing Race

The UCLA Bruin Marching Band will open up the 24th Season of The Amazing Race on Sunday, February 23 and a local young man will be part of it. South Tahoe High Graduate Thomas Smith, son of Michael and Madonna Doyle and Tom Smith, plays the trumpet with the Bruins. The Biology major is a Freshman at UCLA.

While at South Tahoe High, Thomas was involved in theater, music and dance.

You can see him on the very opening of this clip. Smith is the 2nd one in, near the 20 yard line, in the diagonal leg of "R."

South Tahoe High Hoops Report

In front of family and friends, the South Tahoe High seniors took to the court for their final regular season home game on Saturday against Fernley High. It what is referred to as the "Senior Game," a special ceremony honored the senior class members of the boys and girls basketball teams, cheerleaders and dance team members.

It was a close game for all 4 quarters of the boys' varsity game, with Fernley holding onto a 65-58 win over South Tahoe.

The Varsity Girls' team, led by 13 points scored by Kayla Griffis, beat Fernley by a score of 55-37.

Restrictions Put on South Tahoe High Basketball Game Saturday

Due to an incident which happened at Tuesday night's South Tahoe High School basketball game, school officials have put restrictions on Saturday's game against Fernley.

Emails and phone calls went out to the parents of all STHS students, stating that "a large number of students violated the expected behaviors of positive team support, being welcoming hosts, and upholding the Viking Goals."

Because of this, school administration will only allow students to attend "and remain seated with their parents" at the game.

Athletes from around the world are headed to Sochi, Russia for the start of the 2014 Olympics on Thursday, February 6. Television viewers will be able to follow all ten Lake Tahoe area athletes starting on the first day of competition. The following is the NBC schedule of events, subject to change. Grand Opening of South Lake Tahoe's Youth Sports & Recreation

Youth Sports and Recreation celebrated a ribbon cutting on January 31
with Tahoe Chamber on hand to officiate. Owner Tim Wesley invited guests
to tour his facility and learn more about the business, which operates to promote physical activity and provide nutritional education to children ages 5 to 17.

Youth Sports and Recreation also provides a tutoring center for after school care. Instructors demonstrated martial arts while children tried
the various machines available, including stationary bikes that allowed riders to play video games as they cycled.

Auditions for Man of La Mancha at LTCC’s Duke Theatre

The Lake Tahoe Community College Theater Arts Department will hold auditions for the Tony Award-winning musical Man of La Mancha on Monday, February 3 at 7 p.m. in the Duke Theatre. Callbacks will be Saturday, February 8 at 12:30 p.m.

The book for this popular musical was written by Dale Wasserman, with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion. LTCC’s production will be directed by Susan Boulanger, with musical direction by Dr. Mark D. Williams and choreography by Angela Smith.

South Tahoe High Production of Mel Brook's Young Frankenstein Sure to be a Hit

Lots of fun and great laughs are promised during the South Tahoe High performance of Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, The Musical, which will hit the stage of the school's new theater over the next two weekends.

Based on the 1974 movie, Mel Brooks added music and dance numbers to bring the play to a whole new level. "The kids have been working hard with long hours, and they're enjoying it," according to Liz "Niv" Niven, the school's theater director since 1997.

SnowGlobe: DJ Galen Brings Party Dance Music to South Lake Tahoe

San Francisco's DJ Galen is headed up the mountain to perform at this year's SnowGlobe. His DJ sets reflect a deep, funky, underground warehouse sound stemming from a synchronous relationship with a multitude of compositions. His mixing ability enables him to smoothly and effortlessly flow between styles within a single set, adept at adjusting his sound to meet nearly any situation.

The artist, who's real name is Galen Abbott, graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in Electronic Music.

Jazz For the Holidays Show Set for December 20th

With the holiday season now in full swing, it’s only appropriate that the Reno Jazz Orchestra (RJO) brings Jazz for the Holidays to Northern Nevada for all to enjoy on December 20, 2013 at The Nightingale Hall - University of Nevada. Accompanying the accomplished musicians of the RJO are vocalists Cami Thompson and Kenn Pettiford, international Tap star Sam Weber and performers from the Sierra Nevada Ballet under the direction of Rosine Bena. The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Vern Scarbrough, will open the holiday performance which starts at 7:30 pm.

Peanutcracker Ballet Ideal for Kids this Holiday Season

The Sierra Nevada Ballet will present the popular “PEANUTCRACKER – The Story in Nut Shell” on December 6 and 7 in Carson City and December 17th in Reno, Nv. Based on Lev Ivanov‘s original ballet “The Nutcracker”, PEANUTCRACKER is a shorter, 45-minute narrated version that is “designed for families with younger children to introduce them to the wonderful world of ballet,” noted Rosine Bena, Artistic Director of the Sierra Nevada Ballet. Bena who wrote and choreographed this traditional holiday show.

Halloween Fun in South Lake Tahoe Starts This Weekend

Halloween is always a celebration in South Lake Tahoe and this year is no different. Even though the actual holiday is on Thursday, October 31, the parties and celebrations start in town this weekend. Here is an overview on all that is happening:

Halloween Dance with the Tahoe Dance Band - at the Senior Center on Friday, October 25. The 17 piece dance band will perform big band music, food, drink, costume prizes. 7:30 - 10 pm. $10.

South Tahoe High Homecoming Parade

More than 2 dozen decorated cars and trucks carrying South Tahoe High students lined Highway 50 on Saturday morning for the Annual South Tahoe High Homecoming Parade. The school's Pep Band, Lady Vikings, Football and Soccer teams, cheerleaders, Homecoming Prince and Princesses, alumni and classes as well as Pop Warner cheerleaders and players joined in the fun. Candy was tossed from passing cars and there were lots of cheering parents and residents along the parade route.

Wa She Shu It’ Deh Native American Arts Festival

Wa She Shu It’ Deh Native American Arts Festival, Tallac Historic Site. Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The festival features native arts and crafts, food vendors, basket-making, raffles, Native American dance and drum performances.

The Washoe will re-unite at the Tallac Historic Site in South Lake Tahoe to honor their culture and heritage during their annual Wa She Shu It’ Deh Native American Arts Festival. Lake Tahoe Music Camp to host its 57th gathering July 21-27

The University of Nevada, Reno is set to hold the 57th Lake Tahoe Music Camp July 21-27 at the Nevada State 4-H Camp. Each year, nearly 200 students in grades 8 through 12 participate in a week of music activities, rehearsals, team building exercises and recreation time, all on the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe.

The camp is filled with jazz and classical music workshops, clinics, performances, mentoring and instruction with award-winning University faculty, guest conductors, professional Chamber singers and jazz musicians and more.

Kirkwood celebrates seven feet of snow and 40th anniversary New Year's Eve

With seven feet of new snow in the past four days, Kirkwood Mountain Resort is living up to its reputation for the deepest and driest snow around Lake Tahoe and is well on its way to exceeding its average annual snowfall total of 600 inches.

So far the 2012-13 season snowfall total for Kirkwood is 210 inches, and more is on the way with storms heading into the New Year in time for the mountain's 40th anniversary.
