Azul Latin Kitchen raises $11,000 for Tahoe Arts Project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the past year, Azul Latin Kitchen in South Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Village has been fundraising for Tahoe Arts Project (TAP). The fruits of their efforts were presented to TAP during their public Williams Duo concert on Januar 30.

Each year Azul Latin Kitchen selects a local nonprofit to be the recipient of their fundraising for the year. In 2017 it was Tahoe Youth and Family Services, last year Live Violence Free, then in 2019 TAP.

Funding for reimagination and renovation of Spooner State Park now in place

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Construction is set to begin in May 2020 on the renovation and reimagination of facilities at Spooner Lake State Park. A collaboration between Nevada State Parks, Nevada State Lands and the Tahoe Fund has been successful in securing funding and donations to complete plans for the 35-year-old park.

Where to watch Superbowl LIV in South Lake Tahoe

Super Bowl LIV, the 54th Super Bowl (the 50th modern-era National Football League championship game) will decide the champion for the NFL's 2019 and 100th season. The National Football Conference champion San Francisco 49ers will play against the American Football Conference champion Kansas City Chiefs.

No matter who you are rooting for, or if you just enjoy watching the game which is known for epic halftime shows and commercials (and championship football), South Lake Tahoe and Stateline are providing parties and fun spaces to do so on Sunday.

South Lake Tahoe gymnasts win at first two meets of 2020

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The Inversion Gym Girls Gymnastics Team entered the 2020 season in top form with back-to-back wins at their first two meets. The girls were competing in the Excel Division, sanctioned by USA Gymnastics, at the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels. The competitions are all comprised of the four women’s gymnastics events; Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise, with awards also for the best All-Around performances. In each meet multiple teams compete, from gyms around Northern California and Nevada.

60th anniversary of Squaw Valley Olympics to be celebrated at Sierra State Parks event

It has been 60 years since the 1960 Winter Olympics were held in Squaw Valley and Sugar Pine Point State Park at Lake Tahoe. To celebrate this anniversary, the Sierra State Parks Foundation is hosting a presentation on the event with author David Antonucci on February 15, 2020.

Jamie Anderson of South Lake Tahoe wins gold again at X Games

South Lake Tahoe's Jamie Anderson has never missed a podium in the past 14 years of competing in the X Games, and this year is no different.

The 29-year-old queen of slopestyle took the gold on Saturday in Women's Snowboard Slopestyle at X Games Aspen 2020, giving her a 16th medal, the most for a woman in the history of X Games winter or summer events. Seven of those are gold and five silver.

Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation and AleWorx team up to raise $20,000

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation (LTEF) has partnered with Lake Tahoe AleWorx this year in a unique 2020 fundraiser. On the 20th of each month in the year 2020 AleWorx and LTEF will host a themed special event in support of South Lake Tahoe schools.

In addition to the fundraising events on the 20th of each month, LTEF is creating a Facebook Fundraising Campaign with the goal of raising another $20,000 this year.

Road and closure update: Traffic on US50 being held, LTCC closing at 6 pm

6:50 p.m. update: US50 is back open but SR89 at Emerald Bay remains closed as does SR88 just west of Kirkwood.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A winter storm is currently delivering heavy snow and creating unsafe road conditions in the Lake Tahoe Basin. There are several updates to roads and schools for Thursday at 5:00 p.m.:

Due to numerous spinouts, traffic on US50 is being held at Twin Bridges. Crews are also in the region performing avalanche control.

SR89 at Emerald Bay is closed due to unsafe conditions. No estimated time of reopening.

Cell tower and 56-acre project in South Lake Tahoe top full agenda for City Council

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first meeting of the new year for the South Lake Tahoe City Council will take place on Tuesday, January 14. They will start off with two closed session meetings to discuss the interim city manager position, one on Friday, January 10 at 3:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m., prior to the start of their regular meeting.

To help them in these efforts, Waste Free Earth is on board to create an environment of sustainability through strict guidelines for vendors and sponsors, recycling waste bins throughout the event, and daily trash pickup and sorting.

Big crowd shows up to welcome Humane Society back to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has opened an office in South Lake Tahoe to better serve the community and they celebrated along with a full crowd at their grand opening reception on Tuesday.

HSTT came to the aid of the South Shore after the former director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society embezzled almost $60,000. Its members tried to hold the 51-year-old agency together but it disbanded in January of this year, never being able to gain back the trust of the community.

Tahoe Film Festival returns to the North Shore

The 5th annual Tahoe Film Fest presents an incredible selection of new feature films and documentaries on various topics, as well as important award-winning environmental films. Several filmmakers introduce their works. The event is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy almost thirty films and interact with other film aficionados.

All proceeds from the festival, which runs on the North Shore from December 5-8, go to support educational programs at the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.

Local students honored by DAR Chapter

On Thursday evening, November 21, members of Lake Tahoe Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and guests gathered to honor two local high school students with the prestigious DAR Good Citizen Award.

This award has been presented to deserving high school students since 1934. However, the award has never been presented in the greater Lake Tahoe Basin because, until February 2019, there was no DAR chapter in the area.

Space cleared to make way for new Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club building

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's looking a lot different at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe facilities at the former Al Tahoe Elementary School on Lyons Avenue.

The current South Lake Tahoe site for BGCLT had major clearing this week to make way for a brand new clubhouse. Old portable buildings were removed as were some trees as crews make way for their multi-million dollar future home.

Heavenly Village tenants buy turkeys for Christmas Cheer families

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It started with a chat a few weeks ago between Tom Davis of the Christmas Cheer Board and Dreu Murin of the Heavenly Village. Tom had told Dreu there was a need for turkeys this holiday season in the South Lake Tahoe community.

Dreu then spoke with Gary Casteel Jr., owner of the Heavenly Village, and a plan for a Village Turkey Drive formed.

Harrah’s/Harveys’ HERO members who volunteered at Bread & Broth’s dinner on October 21 came prepared to work hard, and that they did. Exquisite Grill expands into the Tahoe Seasons Resort; Stop by for special food nights

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the past ten years, the community has come to know David Mullen and his Exquisite Grill through special events calling for roasted pig and barbeque. Now, the popular caterer is operating out of the Tahoe Seasons Resort in South Lake Tahoe with an expanded menu.

Carmen Elaine Withrow (Terrell) passed away peacefully on October 8th, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, she will be dearly missed by those that knew and loved her. She was a compassionate person, kind to everyone, not one to talk about others and always there for you in a time of need. She was born on June 19, 1942 at home in Whitt, Texas, the youngest of 6 children and 12 years younger than the next oldest sibling.

EDC school leaders educate Gov. Newsom on PSPS impacts

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The ski resorts have yet to open in Lake Tahoe, but young racers and competitors headed to BlueZone Sports Saturday for "Competition Day" where they had special prices and prizes.

One of those prizes went to 14-year-old Sebastian Kilgore, a freshman at South Tahoe High School. Blue Zone Sports selected the young man who competes in slopestyle and rail events in the USAA South Tahoe Series. Kilgore had a very successful 2018-19 season and placed fourth in Nationals where his "Front 630 Off Rail" won the "Best Trick" award.

Tahoe Regional Young Professionals to hold mixers on both north and south shores

Young professionals and other community members have two opportunities to network on both the north and south shores of Lake Tahoe during the month of October.

The Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP) will host two networking mixers. On the South Shore, their networking mixer is on Wednesday, October 9, and on the North Shore, the mixer is on Tuesday, October 15.

Everyone in the community are invited to attend these events, regardless of age. Although membership is encouraged and available for purchase at events, it is not required.

5,000 Lahontan cuthroat trout to be placed in Lake Tahoe for first time; Public invited

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the first time ever, the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery will release 5,000 large Pilot Peak Lahontan cutthroat trout into their home waters of Lake Tahoe.

Over three days, the 12"-14" sized trout will be placed in the water, and the public is invited to two of those historic, interpretive stocking events during the Fall Fish Festival at Taylor Creek.

Celebrate the annual fall migration of the Kokanee salmon at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center on SR-89.

The Fall Fish Festival focuses on a variety of fish species that live in Lake Tahoe and its rivers. In addition to the Kokanee, these species include the federally threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout and little-known smaller fish, such as speckled dace.

Remembering Carson Valley in the 1950s and 1960s at Dangberg Historic Park

On Saturday, September 28, at 10:00 am, the final event of the 2019 Festival season features members of the 1962 graduating class of Douglas High School sharing their memories of Carson Valley in the 1950s and 1960s.

Carson Valley has always been a unique, close-knit community. Of the original thirty-five graduating students, twenty-one are still living, many of whom have remained in Carson Valley.

Graduates of the Douglas High School Class of 1962 continue to meet regularly, explaining that they are good friends who enjoy reminiscing.
