Our community has less than one week before November 6th, election day, arrives. There are many important issues on the ballot. My husband and I just mailed ours in on Monday and I was reminded again of how fortunate we are to live in a nation where the voters decide on such topics as daylight savings time, on new laws preventing cruelty to farm animals, allowing rent controls to stop spiraling costs that are eliminating housing options, and many other state and local topics.

Hello, my name is Susan Blankenship, Assistant City Clerk, and I am running for City Clerk of South Lake Tahoe.

I have served as the Assistant City Clerk since May 2016. Prior to coming to work for the City, I served as Board Clerk for the State Allocation Board and the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board. These positions provided me with the work experience I needed to transition to working for the City Clerk’s Department.

This year is a big milestone in the history of the Freaker's Ball....40 years of fun and entertainment at a variety of South Shore locations since its inception. On Saturday, October 26, 2018 the Freaker's Ball will be held at MontBleu Resort & Spa starting at 9:00 p.m. The crowds continue to grow and the costumes continue to entertain.

The Beginning in 1978

Removing unused, unwanted and expired medications from homes is a huge step in preventing pill abuse and theft, and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will be holding a Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Safeway parking lot.

This is the local's 16th opportunity in the past eight years to get rid of their potentially dangerous medication on the South Shore.

The following is in response to the removal of an anti-Sue Novasel campaign sign and an investigation by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and District Attorney's Office. The DA's office made the following statement - "No charges will be filed because the sign was posted in a right of way, which is improper. Any public employee may remove a sign that is posted in a prohibited area, such as this one.

Join the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless and the City of South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, November 18 for their inaugural fun turkey trot for all ages at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex.

This family event features a Gobble Wobble (10 and under) run at 10:00 a.m. followed by a 5K run at 10:30 am.

The cost is $20 for adults, $15 for ages 11-18 and free for kids 10 and under. Funds raised go to help those using the Warm Room in South Lake Tahoe this winter. The first 100 to sign up will receive a free reusable water bottle. Register at: Tahoehomeless.org/turkeytrot

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Paul Hollingsworth, a 60-year-old South Lake Tahoe resident, has been arrested after confessing to a family member that he killed his live-in girlfriend.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is investigating the death of a man whose body was found near the Chichester housing development Monday, October 8, 2018.

At approximately 7:00 a.m., deputies located a motor vehicle belonging to a man who was reported missing the night before. A search of the area located the man deceased in the field behind Carson Valley Middle School.

At this time there does not appear to be anything suspicious about the death. The family has been notified.

No name has been released.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Lake Tahoe Marathon is October 12-14, 2018 with 1,800 athletes headed to town for the race. Over 20 events will take place around Lake Tahoe during the three days of fun and festivities this year, the 23rd year of the Marathon. Over 2,500 family members and friends are also expected to travel to the lake to watch and enjoy the town.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the season changes it is also the changing of the guard at Cardinale Way in South Lake Tahoe after it was sold to a Texas company, Jim Bagan Toyota.

Joe Cardinale and Jim Bagan ran into each other at a Mazda convention (both have dealerships with that brand as well as Toyota) a few years ago. Whenever they met up after that Bagan would ask Cardinale when he wanted to sell his South Lake Tahoe location according to General Manager Gary Hamner. Each time Cardinale would say "no" until a few months ago.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One of the most popular golf tournaments on the South Shore is the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe’s (BGCLT) Golf Classic held annually at Edgewood Tahoe. As always, this year's tournament will feature 18 fun-filled holes, and for those who can't attend, an online auction featuring golf outings, vacations and hotel stays, events and gifts.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Each of the nine candidates for City Council answered the same ten questions that were given to them by South Tahoe Now. For each of the next nine days the candidate's responses will be shared in the order received.

Suicide is a public health issue that impacts everyone. For some of us, we are reminded of suicide daily. Yet, it is important to know that suicide can be prevented.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is one of the top ten causes of death in the United States. The leading reason for suicide is unmanaged depression or a mood disorder. Considering that 20 to 25 percent of Americans are affected by depression, it is important to know the signs that may help save someone’s life.

Now that the calendar has flipped to fall, you may want to take this opportunity to check in on your financial well-being and ensure you’re on track for the remainder of the year. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two members of the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue family joined members of other agencies on a 9/11 climb up the 9,983-foot Pyramid Peak Tuesday.

Captain Kim George and Engineer Brenan Davis took 13,784 steps on the 4.7 miles hike that involved a gain of 4,000 feet in elevation.

Personnel from El Dorado County Fire, Alameda County Fire and Berkley Fire Departments also participated. They wore jackets and helmets on the climb that honored the 343 firefighters from the New York City Fire Department who lost their lives on 9/11/01.

A call was made to Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) 911 on Saturday, September 8 at approximately 3:30 p.m., alerting them of a missing man in his 60s at Lake Tahoe. The caller, the man's wife, said her husband had left around noon to go hiking in the area of Skunk Harbor on the east shore of Lake Tahoe and she hadn't heard from him.

12:45 p.m. update 9/6/18: The Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators have updated the acreage burned in the Boot Fire to 6,706 acres and there is a three-percent containment line.

US 395 from Walker to Bridgeport remains closed as does CA SR 108. There is a detour available through Holbrook Junction.

Firefighters have a three-percent containment line around the Boot Fire which has now burned 4,620 acres in an area along US 395 nine miles SW of Walker and 15 miles NW of Bridgeport.

Comedian Howie Nave is taking his show on the road, this time to the Carson Comedy Club inside the Carson Nugget September 7 and 8.

Many around South Lake Tahoe know Howie from his number one morning drive radio show "Howie's Morning Rush" on KRLT-FM (krltfm.com) and from his years of comedy on the South Shore. He has long been a staple in the world of stand up. How long? There's a plaque with his name on it near the entrance of South Lake Tahoe that's he's called home now for almost 18 years.

The following are calls that only pertain to the South and West Shore, including Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Meeks Bay, Tahoma and the Echo Summit area. Over the last several months there has been a great deal of wildland fire activity around the region. Sadly, most fires are human-caused and completely preventable if the public would take the time to better understand conditions that are favorable for fire starts. Fire prevention is the key to keeping our communities and forests safe from wildfire.

Although fire season is now considered a year-round event, wildfires mostly occur in the late summer and early fall when temperatures are still high, humidity is low and vegetation that can feed a wildfire is extremely dry.
