The holidays are upon us which means ‘tis the season to GO Local! Tahoe Chamber’s annual GO Local & Win! contest is kicking off on Small Business Saturday, November 25. Simply pick up a GO Local & Win passport at participating businesses or download one online, then shop or dine at any of the participating business through January 1, 2018. For every $25 spent contestants will receive a stamp on their passport. Completed passports are eligible to up to $500 in cash prizes and those that follow along on the @GOLocalTahoe Facebook page have more opportunities to win.

7th annual Tree Lighting in Meyers

The 7th annual Meyers Community Tree Lighting Celebration will be held on Friday, December 1 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Divided Sky/Downtown Cafe parking Lot in Meyers underneath the big tree.

Celebrate holidays at South Lake Tahoe Library

Backcountry skiers trigger avalanche near Mt. Rose

Three skiers in the Hourglass Bowl area on Tamarack Peak near Mt. Rose triggered a 600 foot long avalanche around 10:45 a.m. Thursday. Nobody was seriously injured though two of the party were slammed into trees and rocks according to the Sierra Avalanche Center.

Heavy new snow was falling rapidly at the time. The avalanche was about three feet deep and 200 feet wide.

A group of 4 or 5 were skiing in the area, with three of them involved in the slide. Two of the skiers lost their skis and another had a possible broken ankle.

South Tahoe High runner headed to St. Mary's College

It all started when she joined her mom on Saturday runs while in elementary school. By third grade she was hooked and by fifth grade she found she loved to compete in track meets. In middle school she loved the "Pumpkin Runs" and through high school she consistently made it regional and state meets.

Today, South Tahoe High Senior Ally Sullivan signed a letter of intent to attend St. Mary's College to run on their Division 1 track team. Joined by parents Dan and Deni Sullivan, and brothers Josh and Matt, Ally signed in front of coaches and friends.

Barton's 9th annual Festival of Trees and Lights

Each year, children of all ages stop by the Barton Foundation's Festival of Trees and Lights to ring in the holidays during one of the special events including Senior Stroll, Teddy Bear Brunch and the Gala.

From November 30 through December 3, the convention center at MontBleu Resort will transformed into a holiday paradise featuring beautifully decorated trees, wreaths and decorations and a gift shop with famous Barton cheese balls and unique presents.

Thanks to Vail’s generous EpicPromise grant, Kirkwood Mountain Resort employees had the opportunity to volunteer at Bread & Broth’s November 6 Monday Meal through B&B’s ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment' program. Kirkwood Security Officers Mark DeSacia, Rick Hofheins and Charlie Noury and David McCullers, Security Manager, all volunteered their time and effort to make a difference in the lives of those attending the meal served at Grace Hall.

North Lake Tahoe students get indoor snowboarding lesson from Olympian

LAKE TAHOE - In an ongoing effort to make snowboarding accessible to every kid, Burton Learn to Ride, Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows hosted local kids Wednesday, November 8 for an hour of indoor snowboarding with video instruction from Olympic halfpipe snowboarding champion Kelly Clark, Burton’s Jeff Boliba and instructors from Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

Gates at Van Sickle Bi-State Park close for season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy has announced that the gates to Van Sickle Bi-State Park are closed for the winter season. Although the park's facilities are closed, the grounds remain open year-round and are enjoyed by those on day outings, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just having fun in the snow.

3rd annual Blizzardfest Pray for Snow Party

Active military families treated to weekend in Lake Tahoe

The families of two active duty soldiers were treated to an outdoor adventure weekend in Lake Tahoe thanks to PatriotList.org of Carson City and Move Mountains of Incline Village.

The mission of the program was to weave family activities that blend adventure and communication workshops into the retreat weekend. The families were nurtured and challenged physically, emotionally and mentally while they worked together and thrived through fun and engaging challenges on the SEA, AIR, and LAND.

Guide to Nevada Day activities in Carson City

Lake Tahoe Marathon events around the lake; Some road closures

The kickoff events are now in the record books, and racers are now preparing for the rest of Lake Tahoe Marathon week to get started. Please note, State Route 89 will be closed to vehicle traffic in each direction around Emerald Bay from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 15 during the Lake Tahoe Marathon. Motorists should be aware of runners along the highway from Homewood to South Lake Tahoe.

Douglas County Sheriff's K-9 fundraiser

Emily Lauren Torney 7/27/84 - 09/20/17

Emily Lauren Torney was granted her angel wings on September 20, 2017. She was born July 27, 1984 in South Lake Tahoe, CA to Phill and Sue Torney. She graduated from South Tahoe High School in 2002.

She loved the mountains and enjoyed skiing, snowboarding, water sports, and hiking. Growing up, she was involved in most sports, but loved gymnastics and dance. Her smile and infectious laugh could light up an entire room and she left a memorable impression on everyone she met.

Food Fest to raise funds for South Lake Tahoe schools

Fish are the stars at annual festival in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Fall Fish Festival will take place at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center on Saturday and Sunday, October 7 – 8, 2017. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center is located on SR Highway 89, three miles north of South Lake Tahoe, California. Hosted by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit in collaboration with the Tahoe Heritage Foundation, the festival is an opportunity to learn about the variety of fish species that live in Lake Tahoe and its streams including the federally threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout.

5th annual Save-A-Pet Fundraiser in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe man headed to international Jiu-Jitsu event

In March of 2014, the South Lake Tahoe community rallied behind its native son, Ryan Wallace, and raised $25,000 to get him a new prosthetic leg.

By 2016, Ryan's active lifestyle got the attention of Amputee Blade Runners and he was fitted with an blade runner leg, allowing him to compete in the Endeavor Games in powerlifting, discus, shot put and sitting volleyball.

The Animal Coalition of Tahoe (ACT) and Tahoe Beach Retreat have teamed up for the annual Mutt Strut on October 1 from noon to 2:00 p.m.

Its always a lot of fun for dogs and their owners to take part in one of South Lake Tahoe's favorite events. Walk with your dog along the route, enjoy friends, make new ones and help support the ACT Spay and Neuter Program. There will be raffles, music, games and fun for two and four legged friends.

The Strut will begin at Lakeview Commons at noon on October 1 and will end at Tahoe Beach Retreat (Timber Cove Beach).

Sample the Sierra after party, Local After Dark, features art, dance, food and music

In South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, September 16 after Sample the Sierra, a new community event will be held to benefit Tahoe Youth & Family Services.

Local Art After Dark at the Benko Art Gallery will feature live music, live art, dance performances, local food and drinks from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 at the door and $10 for Sample the Sierra ticket holders and locals (will need to show wristband or local ID at the door. Locals include Tahoe basin and extends to Placerville and Carson/Reno).

Mocktails added to the mix at Cocktails for a Cause

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Revelers will have double the number of drinks to choose from at the eighth annual Cocktails for a Cause fundraiser on Wednesday, October 4. This is because each mixologist will be crafting both a mocktail and a cocktail.

“Cocktails for a Cause is a lively event that helps support health and wellness programs in our community,” said Jenny Taylor, the event coordinator. “This year, we are offering non-alcoholic options to encourage our community members who choose not to drink to join in on the fun and support an important cause.”

Fundraiser for "Santa" in South Lake Tahoe

A fundraiser will be held in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, September 9 for long-time local Bill Horning. The South Tahoe High graduate has had some recent major medical issues but is on the road to recovery.

Horning has spent the last 35 years playing Santa Claus for the community at events such as the Barton Foundation Festival of Trees. He not only worked at the High Sierra and MontBleu, and most recently the Marriott, but has also been a coordinator with Bread and Broth and Second Serving.

20th annual Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day

Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to a fun, hands-on restoration day on September 23 at 8:00 a.m. Participants in the Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day will help restore the Angora Burn area by improving trails and thinning brush to protect young trees. At 12:30, all volunteers are invited to South Tahoe Brewing Co. for a celebration of 20 years of volunteer restoration with the League to Save Lake Tahoe. They will provide lunch, refreshments and a prize.

This is a family-friendly event, presented in collaboration with Hops Envy, and will feature live music, a homebrew beer competition, Poker Run, chili cook-off as well as horseback rides, face painting lawn games and bounce house for children. There will also be food and non-alcoholic beverages. There will also be a silent auction.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe announces the 47th Annual "An Evening of Food, Wine, & Beer Tasting and Competition". This years event will include our local breweries in a competition for 2017 Best of Tahoe Award for the best brewery. The winner of this competition will enjoy a media package with free advertisements from many of our local news outlets.

South Lake Tahoe Rotary's 2nd annual Hootenanny

It's a Hootenanny, complete with music by the Redneck Quartet, local beer tasting, food and fun, all put on by the South Lake Tahoe Rotary club on Saturday, August 19 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Golf Course.

Tickets or those over 21 are $45 if bought ahead of the event, $50 at the door and include unlimited beer tasting and food. Kids 6 and under are free, and designated drivers and those ages 7-20 are $20.

Besides food, drink and dancing there will be face painting and family games.

The Tahoe-Douglas Rotary Club is partnering with Bread & Broth by hosting five Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorships over the next ten months.

“The Tahoe-Douglas Club is happy to support Bread & Broth’s wonderful program and looks forward to a strong relationship with B&B and its fantastic volunteers,” commented Ashley Colvin, Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club President.
