Fundraiser for memorial signs to honor fallen Lake Tahoe firefighter

A stretch of Highway 50 over Echo Summit has been renamed the Firefighter Michael "Mikey" Hallenbeck Memorial Highway, and his family is raising funds to produce and install the signs.

Hallenbeck died fighting the Sierra Fire in August of 2015, near where he worked as a ski life operator. The 21-year-old was also a wildland firefighter for the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

Italian Spaghetti & Meatball Dinner fundraiser for South Lake Tahoe Seniors

South Lake Tahoe seniors will be serving up and endless plate of Italian spaghetti and meatballs for the community during a fundraiser at their center on Sunday, April 2 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Music during the evening will be provided by Dave Fabrizio.

Along with the spaghetti will be a salad, bread, and ice cream.

All funds raised will go to support the local senior group, Senior Citizens, Inc. Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children 5-12, and free for kids under 5.

World Autism Awareness Day fundraiser in South Lake Tahoe

The 9th annual World Autism Awareness Day is Sunday, April 2, and the Tahoe Tot Spot is holding a fundraiser to assist families with access to enrichment for those who cannot afford it.

On April 2, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Tahoe Tot Spot is having a celebration in recognition of autism.

"We will celebrate with free entry for all kiddos rocking the spectrum or special needs," said Tot Spot owner Jen Bloch.

2nd annual Dual on Dynamite fundraiser for Sierra-at-Tahoe Avalanche Dogs

Kenny Curtzwiler, the Lake Tahoe SkiBum, has organized the 2nd annual Dual on Dynamite bump race to be held at Sierra-at-Tahoe on Sunday, April 2 as a fundraiser for the resort's avalanche dogs.

This event will also be the used as the inaugural "Remember Zach 'Zach-Mac' McAllister" event.

A South Lake Tahoe native, McAllister died unexpectedly in November, 2016 at the age of 26. The 2008 South Tahoe High graduate was a firefighter-paramedic at Northstar Fire Department for four years and a ski patroller at Sierra-at-Tahoe for eight years.

SLT Captain Asbury climbs 69 flights of stairs in Seattle fundraiser

It was a task most wouldn't think of attempting, climbing 69 flights of stairs in the fastest time possible. If that weren't enough of a vigorous endeavor, attempt the climb in full firefighting gear and breathing apparatus.

That's 1,356 steps and 788 vertical feet in the second tallest building west of the Mississippi. All accomplished by carrying an 50-60 pounds of extra weight, and all in the name of charity.

Hundreds run into Lake Tahoe for annual Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge

Individuals and teams from Carson City, Northern Nevada and Northern California took an icy cold dip into Lake Tahoe Saturday for the annual Special Olympics Polar Plunge, raising around $150,000 for the program's many functions.

The event at Zephyr Cove Resort featured more than 400 water warriors, many who dressed up in costumes for the event. Participants either ran, walked or swam in the 38-degree lake, which has experienced a rapid rise in its shoreline due to heavy snowfall this winter.

The fifth-grade class at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School is selling water unique "Tahoe Grown" Klean Kanteen water bottles to fund their spring activities.

Maybe you need valentine gifts, bottles for your Tahoe kids away from college, or stock up for your Lake Tahoe friends and family.

The metal, lightweight 27-ounce bottles are $20 and 100 percent of proceeds go to the class.

South Tahoe High Dance Team for a Day open to kids grades 1-8

Dance Team for a Day is back! Join the South Tahoe High School Varsity Dance Team for a fun day of dancing and performing on Saturday, February 4 starting at 10:00 a.m. Participants will spend the day with the team, learn dances and then perform at the halftime show of the South Tahoe High vs. Lowry High of Winnemucca basketball game at 2:30 p.m.

Snowglobe gave back to the community by using local high school boosters clubs to run their merchandising booths during the three-day music festival in South Lake Tahoe.

Both the South Tahoe High and George Whittell High School booster clubs participated.

"The Snowglobe staff was unbelievable, Chad Donnelly, Leah Chisholm, Lauren Winschester, Kaitlin (in accounting), Erin (credential) and Luke White," said the booster clubs. "The job was a little larger than described but it was a great learning experience and fundraiser for both schools."

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) would like to thank Alpine Carpet One for their support. In December, TCH opened the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room for the winter 2016-17 season. Alpine Carpet One was a generous supporter not only of our fall fundraiser but by donating carpet for our space. This donation helps keep our guests experiencing homelessness more comfortable in the Warm Room. The Warm Room plans to remain open through early April.

'Ability Bash’ fundraiser honors veterans and participants with disabilities

The annual 'Ability Bash" fundraiser at Squaw Valley on January 28 will wrap up a week-long Military Sports Camp for disabled veterans. The event will honor the veterans as well as the participants with disabilities who work with Achieve Tahoe throughout the year.

Achieve Tahoe is a provider of winter and summer adaptive sports instruction at all ability levels for adults and children with disabilities. The Ability Bash will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the resort's conference center.

Founder of South Tahoe High Ally Club returns to speak to students

Being gay and a high school student in South Lake Tahoe in 2005 was challenging.

"It was a scary, dark place at the time," said Alex Boyar, who 'came out of the closet' at age 14. "Its a much different environment today."

Boyar, along with his mother Dr. Virginia Berry and sister Christina Boyar, stopped by South Tahoe High Thursday to talk to the students of Ally, the Gay-Straight Alliance Club at the school that he co-founded in 2005.

LTCC Rock Ensemble to "Rock Out For Cancer" at fundraiser

Students in the school's Rock Ensemble classes will hit the stage for an evening of classic rock n’ roll hits, some gospel, some country, and a little bit of heavy metal to raise funds for the Angie Peart Cancer Fund.

Angie Peart, who herself is a rock student herself, is the wife of the LTCC reprographics/phone operator Bob Peart. She has been battling brain cancer since 2015.

South Lake Tahoe girls ask for community's help to keep others warm

Three South Lake Tahoe girls want to help those less fortunate this winter by helping keep them warm with donations from the community.

Maiella Riva, her sister Milan, and friend Lily Demus are collection warm gloves, socks and thermals for the Tahoe Warm Room, others in need in South Lake Tahoe and in Reno. The Riva girls got the idea from family friends who do comething similar in Reno so they want to donate a small percentage back to that project for inspiring them.

Their goal is get 50 items by December 16.

No One Fights Alone fundraiser for local woman battling cancer

South Shore resident Rosie Parker is fighting esophageal cancer, and a Lake Tahoe benefit concert is being held to help her and her family with growing expenses on Friday, October 21 from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at Cold Water Brewery.

“We are showing our love, we are showing our support for Rose,” said Cold Water owner Debbie Brown, “Our brewmaster’s wife was diagnosed with esophageal cancer back in August, and she is fighting the fight of her life.”

Lake Tahoe Olympians to be honored at Gold Medal Gala

Its been 50 years since the first gold medal in skiing and snowboarding was won by an American. Since Gretchen Fraser’s historic slalom gold at St. Moritz in 1948, 31 athletes from the U.S. have brought home 35 gold medals.

In the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe each won gold, Bowman in women’s halfpipe skiing and Anderson in women’s slopestyle snowboarding.

Winning cocktail at annual Barton event named after SLT woman fighting cancer

"Krista's Cause" won top honors at the 7th annual Cocktails for a Cause held on September 21 at the Riva Grill, a drink created in honor of South Lake Tahoe local Krista Kline Carson, who is fighting brain cancer with treatments in Germany.

Gary Gamprie and James Olson of LewMarNel’s Steaks & Spirits received the honor for their mauve fruit smoothie. Their drink will be featured as the signature cocktail at the Barton Foundation’s 25th annual Gala at the Festival of Trees & Lights in December.

Fundraiser for seriously injured South Lake Tahoe man

Tim Anderson, a South Lake Tahoe flooring contractor, was run over by a car near his home on August 24. He was air-lifted to a trauma center where he remains in critical condition with a tracheotomy, internal injuries, a broken pelvis, broken ribs, scapulas, and other serious injuries. He is breathing on a ventilator and cannot yet talk.

Tim's three sons, Christian, Corey (& fiancé April) and Cameron, and his best friends, Andy, Jody and Joe have been by his side, as well as the Reilly family, Mickey, Mark, and his grandchildren.

Slipping and sliding down Ski Run was the Tahoe event of the weekend

The upper portion of Ski Run Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe was transformed into a massive water slide and block party on Saturday, courtesy of Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP) and Slide the City.

By looking at the faces of those descending down the water covered inflatable tarp, and hearing their squeals of delight, this event will become an annual occurrence on the South Shore.

"This was so awesome," said one young participant who was on his 10th slide of the day. The cost was $15 per run, $30 for three runs, or $45 for the whole day.

Donald Trump and the almost 900 attendees at Friday night's fundraising dinner at Harrah's Tahoe most likely didn't see or hear the protesters outside, but passing cars and pedestrians sure did.

A small group of protesters started standing on the corner of Stateline Avenue and Lake Tahoe Blvd at 5:00 p.m., waiving signs and chanting anti-Trump sentiments. Honks and clapping greeted the group outside, while those inside paid $200 to $500 a person to attend the 2016 Battle Ground Dinner, sponsored by the Nevada Republican Party.

Aktion Club holds community Bake Sale Saturday

The Aktion Club will be having their annual bake sale at Grocery Outlet on Saturday, August 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Homemade cookies, cakes, brownies and other yummy treats will be sold to support the Aktion Club fundraising activities. The Aktion Club is made up of adults over the age of 18 who have a disability. Through the club they learn leadership and community involvement.

The Aktion Club issponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe-Sierra.

Enjoy BBQ at historical Celio Ranch and raise funds for Bread & Broth 4 Kids

The historical Celio Ranch in Meyers will be the scene for Burlap & Denim, a new fundraiser for Bread & Broth 4 Kids, on Saturday, September 10 from noon to 4:00 p.m.

Enjoy a Tri-Tip BBQ prepared by the South Lake Tahoe Fireman's Association, dancing to live music, a silent auction, games, a country selfie booth and spirits, all at the Celio Ranch which is over 150 years old. Tours of the ranch by members of the Celio family will also be available.

Tahoe Arts Project holding annual concert on the beach

Tahoe Arts Project is holding Music on the Beach, their annual summer celebration fundraiser, on the shore behind Tahoe Lakeshore Lodge on Thursday, August 25 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Musicians Trey Stone, Niall McGuiness and John Shipley return for the sunset concert and benefit raffle.

Attendees are encouraged to bring low-back beach chairs, blankets, food and drinks (alcohol is allowed).

Suggested donation is $10 and tickets are available at the door.
