Professional cycling legend Levi Leipheimer was in Lake Tahoe recently to promote the Lake Tahoe specialty vehicle license program of the California Tahoe Conservancy.

Leipheimer, a two-time U.S. national champion, Olympic medalist, and three-time Tour of California winner, has continued to use his role in cycling to advance good causes, including through his King Ridge Foundation, which supports programs serving at-risk youth across the country.

Whether out on the water, lounging on the beach or hiking to a rock outcropping to take a plunge, there are important precautions to keep in mind with water surface temperatures and cold water immersion.

Volunteers needed to assist the public in the Lake Tahoe backcountry

The USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is forming a new volunteer team to provide a “uniform presence” in Lake Tahoe areas where they do not have staff available to be in the field or on the many trails.

A formation meeting for is being held for all potential volunteers on Friday, June 28 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at LTBMU Supervisor Office located at 35 College Drive in South Lake Tahoe.

1982 Mt. Rose murder solved through genetic genealogy

On July 17, 1982, the body of a woman was found off of a hiking trail in the Sheep's Flat area near Mt. Rose just a few miles above Incline Village, was found. There was no identification or jewelry on the victim and investigators could tell by her clothing she may have been headed to Lake Tahoe when she was murdered.

And there was no suspect.

For over three decades, both her and her killer's identity have been unknown but with new DNA technologies, hard work by a team of law enforcement investigators and genealogists, the case has been solved.

Susan Allison Mancini ~ 3/26/62 - 4/30/19

Allison, also affectionately known as Allidaughter, was born in Bishop, California to Mary Strobel and Robert Dietz when Robert was the manager of the Mammoth Mountain Inn.

She attended Immaculate Heart High School in Hollywood and graduated from South Lake Tahoe High School. She studied at El Camino College and Lake Tahoe Community College.

Allison was an accomplished sailor spending almost every weekend during her early high school years sailing to Catalina Island.

In addition, the Sheriff encourages questions from the audience on any other subjects that are of concern.

State Route 89 recreation plan to address traffic, experiences and parking

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Giving people a positive experience as they travel along the west shore of Lake Tahoe will require removing congestion from the roadway is one of the goals of the State Route 89 Recreation Corridor Management Plan.

A collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations have been working on the plan which covers the stretch from 15th street in South Lake Tahoe to the Placer County line at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Along the plan area are popular areas to view scenery, hike, bike and visit beaches along a 12 mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline.

Body of Carnelian Bay woman found one mile from car crash on SR28

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 46-year-old Carnelian Bay woman was found Thursday morning after Placer County Search & Rescue teams had been looking for her since a Monday afternoon car accident.

Kathryn "Lani" Jones was found on a popular hiking and snowshoe trail about one-half mile from her home.

John Thiel: New man at the helm of South Tahoe Public Utility District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After Richard Solbrig told the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors he was retiring in January 2019 after 29 years with the agency the hunt was on for a new general manager.

It turned out they didn't have to look far.

John Thiel had been hired by Solbrig in 1992 as a staff engineer and he worked his way up through the ranks over the last 27 years until the Board chose him as the new general manager.

Incline Village Forest Service office to close temporarily

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will temporarily close the Incline Village office beginning Wednesday, December 26, 2018. All services will be available through the Forest Supervisor’s office in South Lake Tahoe, including the sale of Access, Senior and Interagency passes along with fuelwood (seasonal) and wilderness permits. The South Lake Tahoe office also sells maps and offers backpacking, biking, hiking, off-highway vehicle and other recreational information for the Lake Tahoe Basin.

On Thursday, December 13, 2018, Stephen Bannar, loving husband and father of Brandon and Allison, passed away at the age of 55. Stephen was born in Camden, New Jersey on March 18, 1963. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1985 and completed his Medical Degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1990. Stephen practiced Orthopedic Surgery for 25 years. On May 18, 1991, he married Barbara Lee Storck. They raised two children Brandon and Allison.

Search underway in Alpine County for missing hiker

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Search and rescue teams were out in Alpine County on Tuesday, searching for a missing hiker.

55-year-old Bradford Dozier was last seen in Sacramento on Saturday morning. Family members said he was heading to the Carson Pass area to go hiking and hasn't been heard from since.

Dozier's car was found on Sunday at the Evergreen Trailhead but his actual destination is unknown.

Family Skate Night to help defray costs for local spinal cord injury victim

South Lake Tahoe resident Rocky Beaty has embarked on a long road to recovery after suffering a spinal cord injury while going gymnastics on May 28, 2018 in a local gym. Beaty fractured his C6 and C7 and was flown to Renown where he underwent a four-plus hour surgery, removing bulging discs, fusing his vertebrae, and placing two rods on the front and back of his spine.

Lake Tahoe Water Trail - "72 miles of pure liquid fun"

Hiking trails have maps, roads have maps, bike trails have maps, and water trails have maps.

The Lake Tahoe Water Trail has been in place since 2003 and is a designated water route along the 72-mile shoreline that connects public launch/landing sites to help paddlers have a safe, responsible, and fun recreation experience while practicing good stewardship that protects the watershed.

The connect users to the trail, a newly designed website has been launched with paddle routes listed that match abilities and interests, navigation tools, and water safety tips.

Hiker missing near Skunk Harbor in Lake Tahoe found Sunday morning

A call was made to Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) 911 on Saturday, September 8 at approximately 3:30 p.m., alerting them of a missing man in his 60s at Lake Tahoe. The caller, the man's wife, said her husband had left around noon to go hiking in the area of Skunk Harbor on the east shore of Lake Tahoe and she hadn't heard from him.

Lost in Tahoe: Dog lost at Sugar Pine Point

Our dog Trippy was lost at Sugar Pine Point State Park on Friday, August 24 and we're asking for the public's help in finding him.

We were boating and anchored in front of the park. At sunset Trippy jumped in the water to swim to shore, something he normally does. He usually swims right back but must have been confused and ran inland.

He is chipped but did not have his collar on. He is a Miniature Schnauzer and responds to the name Tripp/Trippy. He is about 20lb, 12-years-old (but appears younger).

New deputy for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) has a new deputy on board.

Dustin Clifford took the oath of office on July 2 during a ceremony with family and friends.

The new deputy was born and raised in Reno graduating from McQueen High School. After graduation he attended and graduated from the University of Nevada Reno with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.

Clifford enjoys the outdoors by hiking, fishing and hunting and is ready to begin his career with DCSO. He will be assigned to the Jail Division under the leadership of Captain Jim Halsey.

Missing hiker found after becoming separated from group on Tahoe Rim Trail

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (DCSSAR) team was called to the area of the Tahoe Rim Trail south of Stagecoach Lodge on July 4 at 12:45 p.m. on the report of a missing hiker.

Earlier in the day, Aa father, his three sons, and a household assistant were visiting the area and hiking. One person of the group became separated from the others and the others called 911 for assistance when they could not locate them.

Members of the DCSSAR Mountain Bike Rapid Response Team were dispatched to search on the Rim Trail.

Tips for fire prevention this summer in Lake Tahoe

Summer officially arrived yesterday and recreational activities are in full swing in the Tahoe Basin. The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) would like to take this opportunity to remind visitors and residents that wildfires pose a serious threat to Lake Tahoe neighborhoods and communities and we need help to prevent any unwanted fires this summer. Whether camping, hiking or participating in some other activity in the forest, keep in mind the following advice to Keep Tahoe Fire Safe.

Holiday weekend forecast: Winter weather advisory, rain and possible flooding

Mother Nature must not want South Lake Tahoe to enjoy summer, quite yet. After a day of and night of thunder, lightning and rain, more is in the forecast.

There is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 5:00 a.m. Saturday morning, calling for snow above 8000 feet. 1-3" of snow with isolated areas seeing up to 6". Areas affected are Mt Rose, Carson, Ebbetts, Sonora and Tioga passes and high elevation hiking trails around the Lake Tahoe area, Alpine County and Mono County.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health has announced the addition of Dr. Gregory Burkard, Jr. to their family of care providers.

Dave McClure 1950~2018

David Alan McClure passed away from multiple organ failure at Renown Hospital on February 24, 2018.

He was the first born child of Charles and Florence Engstrom McClure in Martinez, Calif., on October 7, 1050. Soon after, they moved to San Francisco, they lived in the student housing quonset huts while Charles got his teaching degree. Four years later they moved to San Anselmo, in Marin County, where the family lived in an Asian pagoda style home until 2016.

Non-profit partners of government agencies play a critical role in managing trails, recreation, planning and other essential activities taking place on public lands. Locally, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) is the region’s largest non-profit trail organization and has the primary responsibility for managing and maintaining about 200 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails in and around the Tahoe Basin in partnership with the US Forest Service (USFS) and NV State Parks.

Douglas County Search and Rescue recruiting new volunteers

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (DCSAR) is looking for physically fit and energetic individuals to participate in its upcoming April academy and join their team.

DCSAR is a highly qualified and respected team comprised of approximately 50 trained volunteer members within the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and responds to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are frequently called out to assist surrounding counties in their rescues, it requires a considerable commitment, but is tremendously rewarding when a life is saved.
