Could more concerts be held at the SLT Community Fields in the future?

During Tuesday's City Council meeting, Paul Reder of PR Entertainment will make a presentation about the possibility of his company holding one or two concerts a year on the South Lake Tahoe Community play fields.

Reder, the owner of The Loft at Heavenly Village, is also the man behind the Reggae Festival and Electronic Dance Music's (EDM) Bass Camp Festival, both held on the South Shore.

One day to SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe

Last touches are being finished at the temporary concert venue on the South Lake Tahoe community field to prepare for estimated 15,000 people who will be attending SnowGlobe 2016. From December 29-31, 2016, electronic music fans will fill the town, and organizers have put some new transportation plans in place to accommodate the crowd attending the almost sold out concert.

Founder of South Tahoe High Ally Club returns to speak to students

Being gay and a high school student in South Lake Tahoe in 2005 was challenging.

"It was a scary, dark place at the time," said Alex Boyar, who 'came out of the closet' at age 14. "Its a much different environment today."

Boyar, along with his mother Dr. Virginia Berry and sister Christina Boyar, stopped by South Tahoe High Thursday to talk to the students of Ally, the Gay-Straight Alliance Club at the school that he co-founded in 2005.

Barton Wellness Lecture: A sneak peek at the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence

LTVA and STR thanks the community for donations

A generous response from the South Lake Tahoe community is going to help make the holidays a little brighter for those in need.

For the fourth year the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling teamed with a “drive and drop” at the LTVA’s California Visitors Center, and curbside collection on regular pick-up days. All collections will benefit Christmas Cheer All Year.

Once again we were overwhelmed by the generous response from our South Lake Tahoe community.

South Tahoe High to present new stage version of White Christmas

A new stage version of White Christmas is on Broadway and touring the country this season, and now the South Lake Tahoe community will be able to see the numbers as the student of South Tahoe High present the play December 8-10 and 16-18.

The updated version of the Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye classic includes old favorite numbers, as well as delightful new ones.

It is sure to put everyone in a “Happy Holiday” mood.

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and South Tahoe Refuse are teaming up again this holiday season to make giving to Christmas Cheer easier than ever between December 5-11.

There are two way for community members to donate, making it easy to help make the holidays brighter for those less fortunate.

South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling is holiday their Community Holiday Food & Toy Drive December 7 through December 11. Leave canned and packaged food along with toys on the curb during your regular collection day, or drop off at South Tahoe Refuse, 2140 Ruth Ave, during business hours.

Family creates "Little Library" for the Lake Tahoe Community

The South Lake Tahoe community is invited to attend the grand opening of a new, free "Little Library" on Saturday, December 3 at noon outside BioSpirit, located at 1116 Ski Run Blvd.

The Haven family, Kathy and Nick, along with their children Alexi (12), Christopher (11) and Marcus (8) created the free lending library, the first of what they hope will be many around the community.

"We are making a little library so that whoever wants a book can have a book," said Alexi. "Also, people who have extra books, they can donate them to the library. That way everyone has books!"

Community invited to Bread & Broth Thanksgiving Dinner

Bread & Broth is offering a special community Thanksgiving dinner on Monday, November 21 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the St. Theresa Church's Grace Hall located at 1041 Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

Cooks are busy preparing over 300 meals so everyone is welcome to share in the feast!

The warming room in South Lake Tahoe looking for winter staff

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is reaching out to the South Lake Tahoe community to fill their full-time site host and operations coordinator positions.

The Operations Coordinator is responsible for overall day-to-day operations and makes $16-$18 per hour for about 20-25 hours of work, mainly in the evenings.

The Site Host works with the Operations Coordinator to manage the Warm Room and works during their open hours. This job gets 40 hours/week and pays $12-$15 per hours.

Both positions are seasonal.

I first met Nick Exline at an event where we had the opportunity to meet Democratic congressional candidate Dr. Bob Derlet. Nick asked about carbon markets and the related benefits to our Sierra Nevada economy. As a watershed scientist, I was impressed by Nick’s informed and thoughtful question. I enjoyed meeting a South Lake Tahoe resident who possessed a strong background in environmental science, as well as a thoughtful man who had ideas about how we could turn our largest obstacles in this region into economic successes for our residents.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services "Night of Magic"

Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) is holding their inaugural Night of Magic on Friday, November 4, 2016 at the Loft at Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. This unique fundraiser will start off with wine and appetizers, and attendees will be able to visit with staff to learn more about their programs. Then, starting at 9:00 p.m., the party moves into the intimate theater for a special Magic Fusion show.

Tickets are $60 per person and all proceeds will go to fund needed programs in the community that serve youth and families.

Kudos: Camp Richardson Resort helps the hungry

For the past several years, after busy and fun summer seasons, Camp Richardson Resort has been hosting Bread & Broth Adopt A Day dinners and helping disadvantaged members of our community.

“We are always grateful to be a part of Adopt A Day and St. Theresa Bread & Broth,” said Vanessa Santora. Vanessa has been coordinating and arranging Camp Rich’s AADs and she has been a wonderful supporter and volunteer at B&B dinners.

Sierra at Tahoe rewards straight A's with hundreds of annual passes

Since 1999, Sierra at Tahoe has rewarded South Shore school children with a free pass to the resort if they complete two consecutive semesters with straight A's.

With an average of 346 passes given out annually (with a high of 377 and 361 this year), Sierra at Tahoe has shown they are committed to supporting local school children.

Cram-a-Cruiser to fill shelves for children's food program

South Tahoe High student sworn in as student rep on LTUSD Board

During Tuesday's meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Trustees, Board President, Barbara Bannar, administered the "Oath of Office" to this year's designated Student Representative, South Tahoe High's ASB President Kendra Conard.

Conard, 17, said she is looking forward to her year as the representative on the board.

As ASB President, Conard said her main goals this year will be to get more students involved in school activities, for them to get more school spirit, and to connect the South Lake Tahoe community more with South Tahoe High and their students.

Low-cost flu vaccine clinics to start in South Lake Tahoe September 28

Low-cost community flu vaccination clinics will start in South Lake Tahoe on September 28 and on October 5 on the West Slope.

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Nursing will be conducting the clinics through mid-November for just $10 per vaccine. No one will be denied service due to inability to pay.

124 local kids now part of TYFS Girl's Project

What started as a small group with a vision of empowering high-risk young girls in the South Lake Tahoe community has expanded into a much sought after program serving 124 girls, and growing every year.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services started “The Girl’s Project” in 2010 to partner with girls and help them become more confident and influential women later in life. The Girl’s Project has now expanded to Tahoe Valley Elementary, Sierra House Elementary, Bijou Elementary and South Tahoe Middle School.

Tahoe man headed to compete in the Endeavor Games

The South Lake Tahoe community pulled together behind Ryan Wallace in 2014 when he needed to buy a new prosthetic leg, which even at a discounted $25,000 was out of reach for the native man.

At the age of 19, Ryan had to have his leg amputated due to a rare form of bone cancer. The leg he received was wearing out after ten years, and the community helped Wallace buy the new one so he could walk and get back to coaching wrestling to the youth of the town.

Staff and volunteers honored during South Lake Tahoe police ceremony

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department, in conjunction with Memorial Day and the National Peace Officer’s Memorial Week, held its annual award ceremony Thursday.

In a very moving ceremony, late SLTPD Officer Mark Hounsell was honored for distinguished service. Hounsell and his wife Jeanne were killed in a single vehicle crash October 17, 2015. Two memorial shadow boxes were presented, one staying at the police department, the other going to the Hounsell's place of worship, Lifepoint Church in Minden, Nev.

Dr. Amanda Weavil voted Barton's Doctor of the Year

Amanda Weavil, MD collected her third victory this month when she was voted Barton Health’s 2016 Doctor of the Year.

Dr. Weavil is a board-certified OB-GYN for Barton Women’s Health. In early March, she won the Dancing with the Tahoe Stars competition and received the people’s choice award. Now, in honor of national Doctors Day, Barton Health physicians and staff voted Weavil as their favorite physician.

In a joint celebration, the two South Lake Tahoe area Soroptimist clubs honored students and women from the South Shore for their contributions to the community.

On Thursday night, members from the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe clubs presented their annual Violet Richardson, Live your Dream, and Ruby awards at Harrah's Tahoe.

Mobile Food Bank coming to South Lake Tahoe; Volunteers needed

Tahoe Warm Room celebrates two months since doors opened

It started with a spark of energy provided by Diana Hankins in December of 2013, and Thursday night two years of constant work and determination were celebrated at the Tahoe Warm Room during an Open House.

The Tahoe Warm Room opened their doors on December 18, 2015, and since then they have served 74 different people who have come in from the cold to keep warm, get clothing and blankets, a hot cup of coffee and meet with a social worker, if desired.

Soroptimist's annual Elegant Evening has gone digitial

Soroptimist International of the Tahoe Sierra is holding their 27th annual Elegant Evening on Saturday, April 23, 2016 in the Harrah's Lake Tahoe Ballroom.

Since this is the group's major fundraiser of the year you can count on a silent auction, and this year the ladies are stepping it up by going digital, following in the footsteps of Tahoe Douglas Rotary's successful auction last year. Even though the event is still a few months away, people can view auction items and buy tickets on line.

South Lake Tahoe firefighters collecting coats for children

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is hosting a “Coats for Kids Drive” during the month of January and they are looking for donations from the community.

Be a hero and help children of the South Lake Tahoe community stay warm this winter by donating gently used coats. All donations will be distributed to children in need within South Lake Tahoe.

Mt. Tallac students create rap song to help Christmas Cheer

The South Lake Tahoe community is aware of Christmas Cheer, and how they serve those in the area by providing food and other necessities all year long. What the community may not be aware of is how students at Mt. Tallac High School came to help the non-profit agency this Christmas season.

Bob Lear, a board member of Christmas Cheer, approached Mt. Tallac Principal Holly Greenough when he was concerned of how the agency would be able to supply all they need to the community after the loss of one of their big donors.

South Lake Tahoe community takes care of each other during holidays

The Christmas spirit has been evident all through the South Shore over the past few weeks as many people and non-profit agencies have been blessed with donations of money, food and gifts to help make the holidays a bit brighter.

Police Department 50th Anniversary As you might expect, once the City was incorporated in 1965, it took some time to create a police department. On July 1, 1967 the police department began providing police services to the City. In 2017,we’ll plan a small public 50th celebration at the police department. Kudos: Ameriprise Financial volunteers feed hungry

Every year in November, Ameriprise Financial advisors and employees participate in national days of service in partnership with Feeding America. This effort centers around helping the 49 million Americans, including 16 million children and 5.3 million seniors who face hunger in the U.S.

On November 9th, the South Lake Tahoe Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. office sponsored a Bread & Broth “Adopt A Day of Nourishment”, organized by Rick Gross, to join this nationwide effort to feed the hungry.

New Loop Road plan addresses community's concerns

Another key part of the continuing revitalization of South Lake Tahoe was unveiled to the local community Tuesday evening during an open house presented by the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD). What was once known as the "Loop Road" project has evolved into what is being called the "Community Revitalization Plan."

SnowGlobe 2015 adds more artists to their Lake Tahoe lineup

Tragic Loss of South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell

It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we inform our South Lake Tahoe community and others of the passing of Officer Mark Hounsell and his wife Jeanne. Mark had served the citizens of South Lake Tahoe as a Police Officer since May 19, 2007.
