TahoeChamber and the United States Census Bureau are teaming up to present two workshops focusing on how to navigate through the Census website and the American FactFinder website.

The workshops will be held on September 26 in the TahoeChamber Conference Room at 169 US HWY 50, Stateline, NV. Bring a laptop computer to interactively participate in the workshop. Bobby Brown Dominates 2,750 ft Long Slopestyle Course Built at Kirkwood

As the chairlifts at Kirkwood Mountain Resort came to a halt this past spring, the Snow Park Technologies (SPT) snowcats were powering up. For twenty days, an SPT crew of seven logged 1,200 hours building the slopestyle course of Bobby Brown’s dreams. Three years ago the professional skier, who is based in Denver, CO, was asking friends, “What’s next for slopestyle skiing?” The result is Red Bull Megaslope, a 2,750-foot long course that flawlessly incorporates six epic features winding across the natural terrain of the mountain.

Teen Court in South Lake Tahoe Invites New Participants

El Dorado County students in grades 8 through 12 are invited to participate in the juvenile justice system through the Teen Court program. Volunteer training will be held September 26, 2013 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in El Dorado County Superior Court, Department 4, located at 1354 Johnson Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe. Upon completion of the mandatory training, teens will serve as court personnel for real cases where a minor has committed an offense, admitted the offense, and chosen to be judged by his/her peers.

Local Teen Bikes Around Lake Tahoe for Charity

When many teenaged girls are planning what to wear or where to hang out on a Saturday night, 15 year old Mykala Muskovitz of South Lake Tahoe is training for the Tour de Tahoe bike ride around Lake Tahoe on September 8. And she isn’t just going to ride, she is going to fundraise with every turn of the pedal.

South Lake Tahoe and canine association team up to install agility equipment at Bijou Dog Park

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association are working in partnership to prepare and install the agility equipment at the Bijou Park.

After careful consideration and discussions with all of the City Departments involved in this project it has been decided that the dog agility park will be located across from the dog park instead of inside the current dog park. We believe this is a better option and will be easier to maintain.

Free Outdoors Jazzercise Event

Jazzercise takes to the outdoors for a free two day exercise event at the Harvey's Arena on Monday, August 12 and Wednesday, August 14. Eight local instructions will showcase some of the hottest routines and highlight music from Pit Bull, Jennifer Lopez, Macklemore, Michael Franti and lots more.

Everyone is invited to this family friendly event which will be a forty minute aerobic worked followed by 20 minutes of strength training.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own weights or tubes if they have them. The event starts at 6:30 pm on both evenings.

South Lake Tahoe Goes to the Dogs

The 2nd Annual Dog Carnival returns to South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, August 17 from 10 am to 4 pm. The non-profit Dawgs on the Run puts on the event to promote the fun and benefits of having dogs in our lives. This full day of fun is for dogs and their humans to enjoy and includes games, contests, raffles, food, prizes and informative demonstrations. All leashed dogs are invited!

South Lake Tahoe appoints public works, administrative service directors

South Lake Tahoe City Manager Nancy Kerry announced Friday the appointment of Raymond Jarvis as director of Public Works and Mary Morris as Administrative Services director both of whom will begin their service with the City on August 12.

Intercollegiate soccer launched at Lake Tahoe Community College

It’s official: men’s and women’s intercollegiate soccer is coming to Lake Tahoe Community College.

The LTCC Board of Trustees voted in favor of launching the soccer program at its last meeting on June 25. LTCC’s Physical Education Department is developing the curriculum surrounding the program, and a decision on a new team name and mascot will soon follow.

Job announcements for the related coaching positions will be released in August, with hiring decisions finalized by October. The new men’s and women’s soccer teams will take the field competitively starting in September 2014.

Agencies host Tahoe Keepers appreciation event at Live at Lakeview

NHP, Department of Public Safety 'Tip-A-Cop' at Hard Rock Cafe Lake Tahoe for Special Olympics

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers as well as other employees for the state's Department of Public Safety will be volunteering their time at Lake Tahoe to raise money for Special Olympics Nevada and California, Friday, June 14.

The Hard Rock Café, located inside Harveys Lake Tahoe at Stateline, Nev., is where all of the fun will be taking place during the lunch and dinner hours. Patrons will enjoy our employees serving as volunteer waiters and waitresses as they assist the restaurant staff that day while they work for “special tips.”

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care preparing for summer

Though many of the units at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care remain empty, there’s still a bustle about the place. LTWC recently held its annual volunteer training day and a new batch of volunteers, along with founders Tom and Cheryl Milham, have been readying the facility for the busy summer season.

UC Davis researcher Charles Goldman to discuss Lake Tahoe, climate change

Lake Tahoe, climate change and how global warming affects the lake will be the subject of a discussion by renowned limnologist Dr. Charles Goldman Friday, 6 p.m. June 7 at the Sierra Nevada College campus in Incline Village.

UC Davis research at Lake Tahoe began with Dr. Goldman. In 1959, he formed the Tahoe Research Group and began regularly monitoring Lake Tahoe. Goldman successfully combined effective research and social action with his pioneering studies of lake eutrophication (the dense growth of algae and other organisms).

California Senate appoints Bill Yeates to TRPA Governing Board

William “Bill” Yeates, a California attorney with 34 years of experience in environmental law, has joined the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board following an appointment by the California Senate Rules Committee.

The seat is one of 14 voting positions on the Lake Tahoe environmental planning agency’s board - seven representing California and seven representing Nevada. One board seat, appointed by the President of the United States, is non-voting.

Lead Paint Renovator, Repair, Painter (RRP) Training Course Offered

South Lake Tahoe's Lead Safe Tahoe program has partnered with Lake Tahoe Community College to offer a Renovator, Repair, Painter (RRP) course in both English and Spanish, April 19-20.

The one-day class explains how to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency's RRP rule. Subjects covered include: health effects, regulations, lead safe work practices, containment, cleaning and record keeping.

After passing an end-of-class exam, students receive RRP initial training certificates.

From March 29-31, 2013, Heavenly Mountain Resort will be buzzing with excitement as Olympic hopefuls take to the California side of the resort to compete in moguls, aerials and dual moguls. The Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships will return to Heavenly’s famous Gunbarrel run, as U.S. team athletes come together for the final event of the season to battle it out for the title of U.S. Champion. Leading the team are Olympic and World Champion Hannah Kearney (Norwich, VT), and hometown hero Sho Kashima (South Lake Tahoe, CA).

Nevada won't recognize Arizona concealed weapon permits

Beginning today, Nevada no longer recognizes Arizona's concealed weapons permits, the state's Department of Public Safety announced.
At a Feb. 28 meeting of the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ association, the groups unanimously agreed to end the recognition of concealed weapon permits. According to a news release, the action was taken in accordance with Nevada Revised Statue 202.3689.

South Lake Tahoe wins excellence award for Lakeview Commons

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office offers academy for citizens

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office has announced classes for its 2013 Citizen's Academy. Residents of the county can learn about the law enforcement agency and its many functions, said Sheriff John D’Agostini.

Classes run one night each week, (typically Tuesdays) from 6 to 9 p.m.. The next academy is scheduled to begin March 19 and will end June 25, 2013 The academy classes are held at the Sheriff’s Placerville OES training facility. Signups are underway for the 2013 El Dorado County Community Emergency Response Team Academy, which will run four days in April, Sheriff John D’Agostini announced Thursday.

Nevada Governor Sandoval Asks For Assessment Of School Security

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today said he wants an assessment of how Nevada’s public schools are doing in regards to security following the horrific shooting deaths a week ago at a Connecticut elementary school.
Sandoval made the request as chairman of the state Homeland Security Commission, which met today by teleconference. A presentation will be prepared for the next meeting of the commission.
