Winter storms in the higher elevations of El Dorado County are a two-sided coin that, on the one hand, provides exquisite breathtaking beauty, recreational opportunity and lifegiving water, and on the other hand, potential challenges for those of us in the unincorporated portions of South Lake Tahoe when those storms leave behind several feet of snow.

As we move into the winter season, we wanted to provide our residents with the latest information on where El Dorado County stands in preparation for snow removal services.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Oliver Starr, executive director of the Tahoe Wolf Center, has announced the publication and remarkable success of his new book, The Wolf Lovers Guide to Raising Dogs. Within days of its release, the book became the top new Amazon release in the Dog Training, Animal Cognition, and Wolves & Dogs categories.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hundreds of new laws will take effect on January 1 in California. Here are a few of them:

A new California law will prohibit state-chartered banks from charging fees for withdrawals that are instantaneously declined. Assembly Bill 2017 applies to banks and credit unions that are regulated by the state; Gov. Gavin Newsom signed it in September. Low-income groups were joined by others in saying penalties for insufficient funds were “junk fees” and said getting rid of them will protect financially vulnerable consumers.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One last storm for 2024 heads to the Lake Tahoe Basin, bringing high winds and a chance of snow, though most of it will be above 7000 feet.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Greater Lake Tahoe area for Sunday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Snow accumulations at lake level can be up to 2 inches, Though 2 to 6 inches can be expected in some areas with up to 12 inches above 7000 feet west of Highway 89. Wind gusts up to 60 mph with ridge winds over 100 mph—wave heights 2 to 5 feet on Lake Tahoe.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - During the December 19, 2024, Douglas County Board of County Commissioner's meeting, the Board passed two transformative bond ordinances that secured $51 million in funding to bring the Douglas County Justice Center project to life. These approved key actions bring Douglas County one step closer to creating a state-of-the-art Justice Center that will enhance public safety, streamline judicial operations, and improve the quality of life for all residents.

Kelsey Adams, the force behind the annual Witche's Paddle on Lake Tahoe, is always looking for ways to make every holiday fun, and maybe a little weird by being on her Stand Up Paddle (SUP) whenever she can.

This Christmas Day, it was a fun adventure for her and her "brother from another mother,' Joshua Mitchell.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Services (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for areas above 6,000 feet starting December 25 at 10 p.m., and through noon on Friday, December 27.

There will be snow above 6000 feet with accumulations of 2 to 6 inches west of SR89 and up to 15 inches along the highest peaks. They expect up to 2 inches at lake level. Ridge winds will be gusting as high as 100 mph. Southwest winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph with wave heights between 2 to 4 feet on Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For 20 years, the women of the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe club have held a holiday luncheon and auction as a way of not only celebrating the season but for raising money for their projects.

Last week, the SISLT club held the annual Holiday Auction & Luncheon and raised over $10,000 for projects, scholarships, and programs supporting women and children in the South Lake Tahoe community.

They also held an Ugly Sweater Contest, resulting in a roomful of fun and festive attire.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - They say it takes a village, and that village came together over the holidays for the South Lake Tahoe community. Since 1997, the Northern Nevada Confederation of Clubs and the Reno Toy Run have been able to help make a real difference for hundreds of Northern Nevada Families in need. They now include South Lake Tahoe in their giving.

In a check presentation on Christmas Eve, $10,000 was given to Christmas Cheer, the South Lake Tahoe nonprofit that supplies food and other necessities to those in need every week.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – In the early morning hours of December 24, 2024, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) patrol units conducted a traffic stop in Minden for a traffic violation. During the stop, deputies observed suspicious behavior from the vehicle’s occupants, prompting the use of a DCSO drug detection K9 to inspect the vehicle's exterior.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - While it may not be the most famous Christmas carol ever sung, "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" has made its mark since it was written in 1978. Lake Tahoe played a part in launching the song into music history.

During 2024, Heavenly Mountain Resort hosted six Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishments (AAD) thanks to Vail’s Epic Promise Grant. The Vail grant funds are awarded annually to non-profits in the communities where Vail Resorts are located, and Bread & Broth has been the grateful recipient of Vail funds to host 12 Monday Meals annually since 2011. With two Vail Resorts in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort alternate months hosting a monthly meal.

UPDATE: Witnesses of Monday's incident at Heavenly's Comet Express Chairlift said two quad chairs could be seen stacked together near the base of the lift, according to Liftblog. Several guests on the ground below were seen being assisted by ski patrol with one guest pinned between the chairs.

On the social media platform, Reddit, commenters said the chair slid backward into another chair, with those on the front chair falling off.

There have been no other updates provided by Heavenly at this time.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The public is invited to comment on the scope of the environmental assessment (EA) for the new Barton Health hospital project at Stateline. The EA will evaluate any potential environmental impacts of the project and amendments required to the South Shore Area Plan (SSAP) for construction.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), Barton Hospital, and the Douglas County Community Development Planning Division (Douglas County) are seeking public comments and will hold a scoping meeting on January 16.

1:40PM: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe has released a preliminary report on Monday morning's crash on SR89 near the intersection with SR88 at Pickett's Junction. At the time of the crash, the roads were very icy after overnight rain and freezing temperatures.

The report says, that due to the icy conditions, the driver of a northbound Chevy Tahoe was driving at an unsafe speed, lost control, and crossed into the southbound lane in the path of a Mazda.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Christmas Eve for the Greater Lake Tahoe area, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. They are calling for snow above 6500 feet with accumulations of 2 to 6 inches west of Highway 89 with up to 12 inches along the highest peaks. Lake Level could see up to 2 inches though much of this storm will result in rain at the lake. Ridge winds could be gusting as high as 90 mph. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph with wave heights between 1 to 3 feet on Lake Tahoe.
