The safety of our patients and staff continues to be our top priority.

For the health and safety of staff and patients, and per California Department of Public Health (CDPH) regulations, Barton Health has updated its visitation policy: any visitors to Barton Memorial Hospital, must show proof of full COVID vaccination OR a negative COVID test taken no more than 72 hours prior to their visit.

Any patient within the hospital who plans to have a visitor, should review this important update—we ask that you encourage your visitors to prepare for these changes and allow extra time to complete their verification process.

Column: Beat the summertime heat for your heart

Summertime living is easy—but for your heart, and with Tahoe daytime temperatures nearing 100 degrees lately, the warmest season of the year can be a challenge.

Dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke can be a concern for people with heart trouble—especially heart failure. That’s because your heart may have difficulty pumping blood to your skin, where heat is released. Sweating helps you cool off, but your medication may make it harder to sweat, too.

As the thermometer remains high, keep these tips in mind for heart-healthy living this summer.

Column: Spot signs of concussion

A concussion is a type of TBI caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth, as in whiplash. Even what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious if it causes a concussion.

Kids who play contact sports are often at risk for concussion, which can put sports—and life—on hold. Concussions can cause a range of short- and long-term problems, and they can affect thinking and memory, vision, balance, language, and emotions.

Column: Update on COVID-19 and the Delta Variant

Column: Shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries

Shoulder pain is often related to rotator cuff injuries. The rotator cuff stabilizes the ball of the shoulder joint in the socket and is involved with daily shoulder movements. Repetitive lifting and/ or sporting activities can cause injury to the rotator cuff, or it may degenerate as a person ages without a specific trauma/ injury.

Column: Five facts you may not know about skin cancer

Your skin has many important jobs, such as protecting your body, helping to maintain your temperature, and generating vitamin D. Yet sometimes your skin doesn’t get the care and protection it needs.

While some sun exposure helps the body make vitamin D and improve your mood, more than a small amount can damage skin cells and lead to skin cancer.

Consider these lesser known facts about skin cancer:

Column: Don’t let alcohol ruin your summer fun

Summer in Tahoe is a perfect setting for outdoor activities with family and friends. For some, drinking alcoholic beverages is part of the fun-in-the-sun experience. But excessive alcohol consumption and summer activities don’t mix.

Alcohol decreases inhibition and impairs mental and physical capabilities, judgement, balance, and vision. It decreases reaction time and increases fatigue. Alcohol can lead to tragic consequences on the water, on the road and in the outdoors.
