SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has released information about Friday night's shooting at a residence in the 700 block of James Avenue.

On September 23 at approximately 6:06 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Dispatch received a 911 call about a single gunshot inside a residence and a possible victim of a gunshot wound. SLTPD patrol officers responded and found a 37-year-old man inside the home with a single gunshot wound to the head.

Forest health partners deploy new technology to help reduce wildfire threats in Lake Tahoe region

TRUCKEE, Calif. — With the Mosquito Fire and Tamarack Fire burning close to Lake Tahoe, and the Caldor Fire entering the Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Fund and Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation announced the deployment of Land Tender™. This is a powerful new software tool developed by Vibrant Planet, that will allow land managers to collaboratively address wildfire threats and plan forest health and restoration treatments. Land Tender will be used in the Tahoe Basin and surrounding critical watersheds covering 1.5 million acres, making this the largest deployment to date of this new system.

Mosquito Fire now 85% contained, 76,781 acres in size

Yesterday, the eastern flank of the Mosquito Fire was mostly quiet with ongoing patrol, mop-up, and construction of contingency lines. In the late afternoon, as some of the large-diameter trees began to smoke again after last week’s rain event, aircraft were deployed, providing support ahead of ground crews.

Mild week ahead for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An upper-level low continued to move north Sunday, allowing for high pressure to continue to build in early next week. Temperatures will top out at 5 to 10 degrees above average, with continued light winds and mostly dry conditions. Breezy afternoon winds are likely Tuesday and Wednesday. A ridge will then build in and stay overhead through next weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Gardnerville man found guilty of felony child molestation and other charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 53-year-old Gardnerville resident was found guilty on September 22 of three counts of felony child molestation and one additional felony count of meeting with a minor for lewd purposes.

Robert Allen Oakes is scheduled to be sentenced on October 17, 2022, and is facing the possibility of 26 years to life in prison for his crimes. Judge Michael McLaughlin presided over the three-week trial in South Lake Tahoe.

Forest thinning work resumes near Pioneer Trail and US-50

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit in partnership with Great Basin Institute will continue mechanical whole tree fuels reduction (thinning) operations around neighborhoods and powerline corridors off Pioneer Trail near Meyers, Calif.

Thinning is scheduled to begin this week in Montreal Unit 25 near the intersection of Pioneer Trail and US Hwy 50. Cutting in Unit 8 is complete at this time, but log hauling will continue for the next week or two.

Weekend offramp closure in Camino as Caltrans finishes up $55.4 million safety project

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. – Caltrans District 3 and the El Dorado County Department of Transportation are alerting the public to significant traffic changes on the U.S. Highway 50 Camino Safety Project. Since many South Lake Tahoe locals travel to Apple Hill each Fall, the changes are something to take note of.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department investigating a fatality

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a home on James Avenue Friday night after being dispatched to a report of a man with a gunshot wound.

At 6:07 p.m., SLTPD responded and found a man with a life-threatening wound. He was transported to Barton Hospital where he later passed away.

Detectives are at the home tonight, investigating the incident. According to SLTPD Det. Scott Crivelli, there is no threat or risk to the community, but there are no other details to be released at this time.

NDOT continues paving work on SR-28 and SR-431

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Drivers can expect multiple work zones next week as paving continues on SR-431, SR-28 in the Marlette Creek area receives slurry seal, and a portion of SR-28 north of Sand Harbor gets repaved. Drivers can expect up to 30-minute delays. Traffic control supervisors will be monitoring traffic flow and delay times.

All work is weather and temperature permitting, and subject to change.

Extended closure on Central Truckee eastbound off-ramp from I-80

Caltrans is alerting Interstate 80 (I-80) motorists in Truckee to expect an extended closure of the Central Truckee eastbound off-ramp for continued reconstruction work.

Originally scheduled to reopen on Friday, September 23, the closure of the I-80 eastbound off-ramp at Central Truckee (Exit 186) has now been extended through 5 p.m. Monday, October 3 due to weather delays. The off-ramp is being reconstructed with paving, joint sealing and striping work still required before the ramp is reopened to motorists.

No herbicides detected in Tahoe Keys - final turbidity curtain removed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) project to test innovative methods to control the largest infestation of aquatic invasive weeds in the Tahoe Basin reached another milestone this week. Monitoring showed that herbicides were no longer present in the Area A test location. On Thursday, divers removed the rubber barriers, called turbidity curtains, that since May had sealed off the test area to restrict herbicide movement.

Traffic through casino corridor to be impacted during Tahoe Events Center construction

Construction starts on the sewer improvement project for Tahoe Events Center on Monday, Sept. 26. The project entails undergrounding overhead utility lines, constructing new sidewalks, and upgrades to existing sewer lines along Uzd-50 in the casino corridor.

Work will impact travel through the Stateline casino corridor and US-50 thru-traffic should use alternate routes during the work hours of Monday through Thursday from 5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Highway message boards will display suggested routes.

Command of the Mosquito Fire is changing Friday as major progress was made on the Mosquito Fire Thursday. The perimeter has a containment line around 60% of it, and 76,575 acres have burned. The total personnel still on the fire is 1,805.

Mostly sunny skies with warmer and drier weather returned today over the Mosquito Fire. Temperatures rose to the upper 60s to mid-70s with light winds from the southwest. This warming trend will continue into the weekend and next week bringing humidity levels down and the possibility of increased fire behavior.

Fall to begin with rising temperatures and clear skies

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Autumnal Equinox was at 6:04 a.m. today, officially marking the beginning of Fall, and the weather around Lake Tahoe is clearing and warming up. After a couple of chilly overnight periods with freezing temperatures, and days of rain, higher pressure will bring drier conditions with temperatures warming to above average by this weekend through the middle of next week.

Public's help sought in Zephyr Cove vehicle break-ins and credit card theft

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) is asking for the public's assistance to identify individuals that were possibly involved in several vehicle break-ins in the Zephyr Cove area in August.

Several vehicles were broken into on August 21 in the later afternoon, and at least one purse containing credit cards was stolen. After the break-ins, one of those stolen credit cards was used at the Round Hill Safeway. Video surveillance from the transaction revealed two possible suspects, a male, and a female.

Mosquito Fire Wednesday update: 76,427 acres and 49% contained

All evacuation orders for both Placer and El Dorado counties have now been lifted, allowing residents to return home. With a significant amount of wetting rain throughout the past four days, fire activity has been minimal and the Mosquito Fire has remained in its current footprint. Firefighters have used this opportunity to make great progress all around the fire before the next warming trend arrives tomorrow.

The fire is 49% contained and 76,427 acres have burned. Just over 2,000 personnel remain assigned to the fire.

El Dorado County moves forward with new homeless Navigation Center plan, changes to several departments

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - After failing to pass a proposed navigation center for El Dorado County one month ago, the Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a plan that will move around departments in county buildings, table current plans for a new juvenile treatment center, and create a temporary navigation center while a permanent home is planned.

It will require several different puzzle pieces to come together in the next 18 months.

El Dorado County to purchase buildings from Barton Health in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County staff has been looking for a building(s) to purchase in South Lake Tahoe in order to bring services together. Action during Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting solidified that plan.

The County has agreed to purchase 1111 and 1119 Emerald Bay Road, currently owned by Barton Health and formerly used as Barton Education, Language Access Services, Customer Service, and Physician Billing departments.

South Lake Tahoe leads the way as city council approves water bottle ban

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2016, the City of San Francisco was the first American municipality to ban the sales of water that comes in plastic bottles. At the time it was called a bold move that was building on a global movement to reduce the huge amount of waste from the billion-dollar plastic bottle industry.

South Lake Tahoe was an early adopter of the single-use plastic bag ban, as well as bans of single-use plastic, styrene, and straws.

New bike trail to link North Upper Truckee area to Tahoe Paradise Park with path and bridge

MEYERS, Calif. - There was a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for the new San Bernardino Avenue Class 1 Bike Path that will connect the North Upper Truckee neighborhood to Tahoe Paradise Park. The project includes a bridge crossing over the Upper Truckee River.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An early season storm is bringing much cooler conditions along with chances for rain and high elevation snow through Wednesday. These cooler and wetter conditions will help limit smoke impacts. The Lake Tahoe Basin saw unseasonably high temperatures in the 90s, then a week of 50s and 60s and rain, and once again the region will see dry and warmer conditions returning later in the week through next weekend.

A large number of evacuees from the Mosquito Fire were allowed back home today. The fire now has a containment line around 38% of the fire, and it is 76,290 acres in size. 3,722 personnel remain assigned to the fire.

Evacuation orders were lifted with the significant increase in containment and tireless work by firefighters and cooperators to ensure that communities would be safe for repopulation. Both the Placer and El Dorado County Sheriff Offices downgraded many of the Evacuation Orders and Warnings in their perspective counties this afternoon.

LTCC State of the College address: On-campus housing, remodel for efficiency, forest degrees

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco gave the annual State of the College address this week where he highlighted the transformational changes on campus.

With the theme of "transformation," the school, staff, and administration are changing how they do business with the goal of remarkable outcomes.

DeFranco likened what the campus is undergoing to that of a butterfly and they are currently in the chrysalis stage. He said transformation isn't always easy but what happens in the next stage is epic.

Good work on the Mosquito Fire which is now 34% contained, 74,748 acres in size

Fire crews made great progress on Saturday and overnight and were able to get a containment line around 34% of the Mosquito Fire. The fire has now burned 74,748 acres.

Colder temperatures, good humidity recovery, and precipitation arrived overnight with the forecasted storm system. Rain showers are expected to continue throughout the day and become heavier this evening and into
Monday. Southwest winds are predicted to become stronger midday with 24-28 mph gusts over the ridges. Higher humidity and temperatures in the 50s are expected for the fire area today.

Child Passenger Safety Week September 18-24

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is highlighting the importance of properly securing children in the appropriate child passenger seat while traveling in a vehicle during Child Passenger Safety Week. They are also using this next week to promote their CHP Child Passenger Safety technicians who provide child safety seat inspections, education, and hands-on training for parents and caregivers. Free child safety seat inspections are available by appointment at any CHP area office, including South Lake Tahoe and Truckee (see here).

Firefighters to get help from incoming storm; Mosquito Fire at 73,381 acres, 21% contained

The wind on Saturday may have stirred up some smoke over the Mosquito Fire, but officials said it looked worse than it was. When the morning layer of smoke was blown out to the northeast, causing ventilation and the hot areas were fanned. The Mosquito Fire is 73,381 acres and 21% contained.

Even with the winds, crews made good headway with dozer and hand work along the eastern edge of the fire.

"It was an amazing piece of firefighting," said Operations Section Chief Dave Soldavini of the efforts at the southeast end of the fire.

STPUD starts easement project in Washoe State Park

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) is repairing easement roads in Washoe State Park to improve access to critical sewer infrastructure and jointly benefit recreational users. The project will occur on the trail south of Amacker Ranch, between the meadow and the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Work is planned for September 26 through October 21, 2022.

Use caution around the work zone and seek alternate trails.

Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe on Saturday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Saturday, September 17 from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Expect southwest winds from 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. As a result, waves should be 2 to 4 feet.

Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Saturday - Sunny, with a high near 68. South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

Good news for some residents near the Mosquito Fire. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and fire officials have changed portions of Georgetown from mandatory evacuations to an evacuation warning status.

Vacancy on the Lake Valley Fire Protection District Board, applications being accepted

The Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) has announced a vacancy on its board after there were not enough candidates to file for the November elections.

The community served by the LVFPD is notifying the community they serve pursuant to Government Code §1780. The appointee will represent the community served by the Lake Valley Fire Protection District as a Board Director for a 4-year term beginning December 2022 and ending December 2026.

Keeping food waste out of trash in South Lake Tahoe - Wednesdays are free food collection days

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Food thrown away in California is a growing problem and there is nearly six million tons of food scraps or food waste tossed each year. This is about 18 percent of all materials that go into landfills according to CalRecycle.

In order for California to reach its goal of 75 percent source reduction, recycling, and composting, food waste must be addressed. Not only is redirecting organic waste the right, and needed thing to do, there is a law in California requiring local jurisdictions to implement organic waste recycling programs.

The Mosquito Fire was mapped Thursday morning at 64,159 acres and containment remains at 20% according to the morning fire operation briefing. Overnight, smoke settled back into drainages due to easing winds, with a majority of the fire area seeing good humidity recovery. Firefighters continued working throughout the night, patrolling, mopping up, and securing
control lines around the south and east sides of the fire.

2023 trial set for man prosecutors say is responsible for fatal Lake Tahoe crash

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Gardnerville resident Rafael Cortez was killed in a three-vehicle crash on March 7, 2021, and now the man prosecutors say is responsible is heading to trial. The 5:11 p.m. crash occurred on US-50 at Mile Marker 3, the curve between Marla Bay and Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe.

Smoke outlook for the Sierra and Northern Nevada

South Lake Tahoe is experiencing good air quality for the second day in a row, while the Reno and Carson City areas are in the 'very unhealthy' range. The Washoe County School District canceled classes in the county in all areas except for Incline Village and Gerlach. Truckee is also experiencing poor air quality.
