Measure T one-day trial over in El Dorado County; Parties now to submit final briefs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Six years after narrowly passing, Measure T is still caught up in the legal system. The ballot measure was a citizen-initiated one that restricted vacation home rentals (VHRs) in South Lake Tahoe located in residential areas. They were still allowed in non-residential areas (tourist core, commercial, recreation) and residents were allowed to rent their homes, no matter the location, up to 30 days per year.

Inmate in El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe found deceased in cell

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An inmate in the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe was found unresponsive in his cell at about 5:30 a.m. Friday. Correctional officers, jail nursing staff, and fire personnel attempted life-saving measures however the inmate was pronounced deceased a short time later.

The identity of the inmate will be provided by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s (EDSO) Office after the next of kin has been notified.

Two die in Thanksgiving night crash on US50 west of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two people died after a head-on collision on US50 at Echo Summit on Thanksgiving Day. At approximately 5:35 p.m. on November 28, the crash occurred between a green 2001 Toyota Sequoia (traveling west) and a silver 2015 Chevrolet Traverse (traveling east) near US-50 east of Audrain Way. The Toyota and Chevrolet collided head-on in the eastbound lane for unknown reasons.

Limited fuel operations for Thanksgiving Week at Lake Tahoe

Limited pile burning may occur this week due to the Thanksgiving holiday. If conditions are favorable, widespread burning will resume next week. Smoke may be present.

Kirkwood parking open house to explain the 2024/25 plans

South Lake Tahoe man reports car stolen shortly after it's involved in a hit-and-run crash

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (STLPD) responded to a call for a hit-and-run collision on Ski Run Blvd. at 6:34 p.m. Sunday.

Upon arrival, officers found three damaged vehicles, all of them unoccupied. Upon investigation, they found that two of the vehicles were parked when the third, a Subaru, crashed into them and then crashed into a tree. The driver of the Subaru was nowhere in sight according to SLTPD.

Chance of rain and snow in week ahead in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - While the Winter Storm Warning is in effect until Wednesday at 4 a.m., the storm appears to be trending warmer with snow projections cut back in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The most pronounced impacts of this storm will be felt across portions of Alpine and Mono counties on Tuesday, with elevations above 7,500 feet experiencing the greatest snowfall.

After this passed, the Thanksgiving holiday and weekend will be generally dry with sunshine and cool temperatures.

Power restored to the 17,000+ customers who spent part of Sunday in the dark

UPDATE: Liberty has restored power to the over 17,000 customers without electricity Sunday afternoon. Power was back on to all South Lake Tahoe customers by 3:30 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty is reporting a large outage at the Y in South Lake Tahoe that is affecting about 6,055 customers. The outage was reported at 11:19 a.m. and at this time, crews are on their way to determine the length of an outage.

There are also a few, smaller outages at the northwest end of the lake.

El Dorado County correctional officer arrested for sexual assault

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office became aware of potential sexual assault allegations involving a correctional officer and immediately began an investigation. On November 22, 2024, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Officer Michael Griffiths IV, 24 years old, was placed under arrest for sexual assault of an inmate.

These stories have included animals being euthanized, long-time volunteers and staff members being let go, a board that isn't transparent, coyotes breaking in and killing an eaglet, and the loss of a permit to house rehabilitating bears.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department receives grant for programs to increase safety

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has been awarded a $45,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). The grant will support the department's ongoing enforcement and education programs to help reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths on our roads.

Winter Storm Warning for Lake Tahoe and region Friday-Saturday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area, Lassen, Eastern Plumas, and Eastern Sierra counties. This warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. Friday to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Expect heavy snow during this period with snow accumulations between 1 to 2 feet above 7,000 feet with 2 to 6 inches below 7,000 feet. Lake-level could see about an inch. Ridge winds gusting as high as 95 mph.

Lake winds may gust up to 50 mph on Friday and Friday night which will cause wave heights of 3 to 5 feet.

From steamers to hydrofoil, is electric ferry travel on Lake Tahoe the next new frontier?

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In the late 1800s, traveling by boat on Lake Tahoe to get around to the communities around its 72-mile shore was the main way to travel. There we no cars, and using horses and wagons was not the easiest, or quickest, way to get around.

The invention of the car and the development of roads around the lake 1934-35 changed boat travel forever on Lake Tahoe, boats were scuttled and cars became king.

Now entrepreneurs are trying to change that and get boat travel on electric hydrofoil boats more commonplace.

Big rig driver cited after getting stuck at Emerald Bay

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - SR89 had to be closed for a short period Thursday morning as an overlength big rig got stuck and blocked both lanes at Watershed Curve at Emerald Bay. Caltrans and CHP-South Lake Tahoe worked together to get the road reopened in a timely fashion.

Big rigs have a length advisory of 30 feet from hitch/kingpin to the rear axle (a KPRA Advisory) in this area, with an overall maximum length of 65 feet.

The truck that was stuck was about 73-74 feet since it had a sleeper birth, giving it the extra feet.

Update: Liberty issues PSPS for Hope Valley, Markleeville, Coleville and Walker

FRIDAY UPDATE: Liberty is issuing the PSPS starting Friday morning at 8 a.m. The outage is for Markleeville, Woodfords, Desolation Hotel (Hope Valley), Topaz, Coleville, and Walker customers, due to extreme weather conditions that increase the risk of a potential wildfire. Customers will need to plan for an extended power shutoff that will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, November 22, and could last more than 24 hours.

Removal of lead-sheathed telecommunication cables from Lake Tahoe now complete

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The lead-sheathed telecommunications cables in Lake Tahoe for decades have now been completely removed. After their discovery by divers with the environmental non-profit Below the Blue, it took years and collaboration between several groups to get to this milestone.

Speed limits to be reduced on some South Lake Tahoe streets

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council approved a lowering of speed limits on some streets in the city after an Engineering and Traffic Survey (E&TS) was completed. California law requires cities to conduct a speed survey every 10 years for a speed limit to be enforceable,
even if no changes have been made to the roadway.

The Council approved a reduction in speed to 30 mph on Ski Run Blvd. from US50 to Pioneer Trail, on Lake Tahoe Blvd. from SR89 (the Y) to D Street, and a reduction to 25 mph on Pioneer Trail from Keller Road to US50.

American White Pelican saved in "Operation Whitey Rescue" in Truckee

TRUCKEE, Calif. – An American White Pelican was stranded in Truckee and a group of people came to its rescue on a bitterly cold day this week, right before a storm hit the region. This story could have ended poorly for the distressed bird, but determined volunteers kept it from a disastrous fate as they battled thick ice, a strong, elusive target, and much uncertainty in trying to save a magnificent American White Pelican.

Village at Palisades Tahoe passes hurdle as specific plan is approved by Placer County supervisors

New leader tabbed for UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – The University of California, Davis, Office of Research has announced the appointment of Stephanie Hampton as the director of the Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) and professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy.

Hampton, an accomplished aquatic ecologist, and administrator currently serving as the deputy director of Biosphere Sciences and Engineering at Carnegie Science, will join TERC in the spring of 2025.

South Lake Tahoe will see wind, rain and snow during upcoming atmospheric river

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though an atmospheric river is aiming for California, Lake Tahoe will not see the brunt of the storm. The area north of San Francisco into the I5 corridor will see massive amounts of rain, up to ten inches in many areas.

The first wave of the storm starts Wednesday, with a second, stronger storm hitting the region Friday into Saturday. The public should watch the forecast as the system gets closer, especially if traveling through the Sierra and over mountain passes.

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District may burn piles around Incline Village, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District may burn piles near Glenbrook, Logan Creek, and on Kingsbury Grade, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit may burn piles off Luther Pass near the campground and off Fallen Leaf and Spring Creek roads near South Lake Tahoe.

City moves forward with annexation of 2600 acres around Heavenly without support of resort

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has been trying to get Heavenly Mountain Resort to support its plans to annex the land where the California operations are located. Heavenly is an island in the middle of the South Lake Tahoe city limits, leaving it to be serviced by El Dorado County while those going to enjoy the resort use city streets and services.

Forest thinning continues in the Lake Tahoe Basin

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) forest thinning (fuels reduction) projects are underway and scheduled to continue through fall 2024, conditions and weather permitting. North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, Liberty Utilities, NV Energy, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit are working together to protect Lake Tahoe communities by reducing excess vegetation that can feed unwanted wildfires.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - To start the week ahead in South Lake Tahoe the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory which is in place until 4 a.m. Monday. Expect rain, mountain snow showers, and gusty winds overnight through early Monday morning. Expect chilly temperatures to continue through Tuesday.

Conditions quickly improve on Monday morning. Although it will be quite chilly through Tuesday, due to the cold airmass staying put until the next system approaches the region by mid-week. Chances of showers midweek for Tahoe with dry conditions likely elsewhere.

Community members sought to judge South Tahoe High School Senior Projects

Most of D.L. Bliss State Park will remain closed for third summer in 2025

TAHOMA, Calif. - Much of the popular D.L. Bliss State Park will be closed for another summer according to California State Parks. They made the announcement Friday that the park on the west shore of Lake Tahoe will remain closed for camping and partially closed for day use into summer 2025. They said the extended closure is necessary to complete an ongoing waterline infrastructure replacement. Campground reservations for the 2025 season at D.L. Bliss State Park will not be available until further notice.

Heavenly unveils transportation plan for easy mountain access this season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With skiers and riders visiting the California side of Heavenly Mountain Resort unable to park on adjacent city streets this winter, the resort has unveiled its transportation plan for the 2023/24 season.

During an Open House the resort held on Thursday, the public was able to speak to staff and learn options for parking, as well as meet avalanche dogs and try out a new menu in the California Base Lodge.

The lodge had several informational boards around the room with the message, "Let the Resort Come to you."

Almost 1.5 tons of trash cleared from South Lake Tahoe encampments

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Almost 3,000 pounds of garbage was removed from three homeless encampments in South Lake Tahoe over the past month. A collaboration between the two field crew members of Clean Tahoe, the U.S. Forest Service, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) addressed the encampments.

Old AT&T cables being removed from Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Twelve years ago, about 139,000 pounds of telecommunication lead cables were found abandoned along almost eight miles of Lake Tahoe shoreline. One long segment of the cables was resting offshore between Baldwin Beach and Rubicon Way, and another segment was inside Emerald Bay.

Largest invasive plant removal project in Lake Tahoe now complete

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Aquatic invasive plants were successfully removed from 17 acres of the Taylor and Tallac creeks and marshes in South Lake Tahoe.

El Dorado County approves pay raises for unrepresented employees, part-time plow drivers included

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a three percent cost of living adjustment (COLA) for its unrepresented staff members. This increase goes into effect for part-time snow plow drivers as well since they are not represented by a union - only full-time transportation staff is.

While this doesn't solve the problem of getting enough snowplow operators on the streets of the county portion of the Lake Tahoe Basin for this winter, it helps those already on the payroll.
