Public invited to Tahoe El Dorado Area Plan workshops

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County is hosting a series of four in-person community workshops for its Tahoe El Dorado Area Plan (TED) effort June 3-6, 2024. The TED is a long-term planning document that will update and incorporate the Meyers Area Plan and other unincorporated communities in the Tahoe Basin area of the County.

Head-on collision between motorcycles leaves one man dead, other injured near Red Lake

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A head-on collision between two motorcycles has resulted in the death of a 50-year-old man from Hayward, Calif.

On Monday, May 27 at approximately 5 p.m., Marcus Canizales was riding his 2007 Harley Davidson V-Rod west on SR-88, near Red Lake, at approximately 65-70 MPH. Heading east was a 2007 BMW K1200 GT motorcycle driven by a 52-year-old Gardnerville, Nev. man, also at 65-70 mph.

Highs in the 70s all week long in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The spring rollercoaster on weather at Lake Tahoe is over, for the time being, as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno is calling for a calm and sunny week ahead.

Warm and generally dry weather prevails through the week. Above-average temperatures continue, except during mid-week. There are low chances for isolated showers Tuesday for the Sierra, northeast California and far western Nevada.

Tuesday - Sunny, with a high near 71. Calm wind, becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Work resumes Tuesday on Gas Line Replacement Project on SR28 between Kings Beach and Tahoe City

TAHOE CITY, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of traffic-interfering work continuing on State Route 28 (SR-28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, continue work on a gas line replacement project on SR-28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.

One-way traffic control is scheduled between Mackinaw Road and Rocky Ridge Road from Tuesday, May 28 at 10 p.m. until Friday, May 31 at noon.

South Lake Tahoe sales tax collection down in 4th quarter

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe’s taxable receipts from October through December 2023 were six percent below the fourth sales period of 2022. Excluding reporting aberrations, actual sales were down 4.8 percent.

Small bear cub abandoned at Bear League offices at Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Mother's Day weekend, someone left a bear cub in a pet crate in the driveway of the Bear League office in Homewood. A note was attached, asking the Bear League to "please help Moses he doesn't have a mother."

The cub was about seven pounds, and almost three months old.

With similarities to the biblical Moses who was placed in a basket and floated down the Nile River to escape death, the bear Moses would have certainly faced death if it was left in the wild alone, without its mother.

Car fails to yield, hits Lake Tahoe Unified School District bus, injuring two

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was a collision between a bus from the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and a Toyota Rav 4 on Friday morning, just before 8 a.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the bus was traveling on Sacramento Avenue when the Toyota pulled out from Merced Avenue where there was a stop sign, failing to yield to the bus which had the right of way. The vehicle then hit the bus.

Washoe County Sheriff's Office investigation leads to arrest of Incline Village murder suspect

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - A suspect in the murder of 54-year-old Jeffrey McCunn on June 23, 2023, in Incline Village, Nev. has been arrested.

A continuing investigation by Washoe County Sheriff’s Office detectives led to the arrest of 30-year-old Alec Flores on May 23, 2024.

Final steel beam in place for dormitory at Lake Tahoe Community College

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It seems like yesterday when the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) trustees and leadership team joined the community in turning over the first shovels of dirt at the site of the college's dream of 50 years, an on-campus dormitory.

The date was August 9, 2023, when the college kicked off the building of a 32,000 square foot, 33-room, 100-bed dormitory between the library and the gym, overlooking Trout Creek.

During their hours-long meeting Tuesday evening, the Douglas County School Board chose three of the six superintendent candidates to move forward into the interview process.

The previous superintendent select ended up not being offered a contract following public outcry after it was revealed he had a criminal and mismanagement history from multiple other school districts.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office responds to drowning at Topaz Lake

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – On May 19, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), along with East Fork Fire, responded to the end of Comstock Drive at Topaz Lake for a reported drowning. When deputies and fire personnel arrived, citizens had already moved the victim onto the shore and started performing CPR.

The victim was transported to Carson Valley Health Hospital in Gardnerville where he was pronounced dead. It appears that he was attempting to get a buoy out of the water when he drowned.

Another mechanical forest thinning project to begin near South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is scheduled to begin mechanical forest thinning next week on approximately 687 acres along the Pioneer Trail corridor from Ski Run Blvd. south to Meyers. The Al Tahoe Mechanical Contract is part of the South Tahoe Fuels Treatment Project intended to reduce the risk of severe wildfires near neighborhoods and create healthier forests in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many South Lake Tahoe and Meyers neighborhoods have become Firewise certified, helping to make a safe and more resilient community against the threat of wildfire.

The first area neighborhood to become Firewise certified was Al Tahoe, leading the way for others to learn how to work together to reduce the threat of wildfire and show insurance companies their results in hopes of not being canceled.

El Dorado County Supervisors approve annexation of Meeks Bay Fire into North Tahoe Fire

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the annexation of the Meeks Bay Fire Protection District into the North Tahoe Fire Protection District, getting all parties closer to the final step in a lengthy process.

The County's Ad Hoc Annexation Committee along with the Chief Administrative Officer's office both made the recommendation to dissolve Meeks Bay Fire and annex the district to North Tahoe Fire.

Dead bodies are piling up at Carson City funeral homes waiting for cremation for months, investigation reveals

Marie Finkes is the director of FitzHenry’s Funeral Home in Carson City, and said that over the past year, there have been 12 bodies under her care that have been subject to extended stays. This is due to the fact that Carson City Public Administrator Scott Hoen has ignored their repeated requests for an electronic signature releasing the body for cremation.

Man who fled to Mexico after sexual assault of minor in Douglas County sentenced to 20 years

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office (DA) and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) tried for six years to have Ricardo Serrano Perez extradited to Nevada after the sexual assault of a minor. They were successful on October 9, 2023, and today Serrano Perez was sentenced to 20 years in the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Local coalition confident voters will reject “divisive and unfair” vacancy tax

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A local coalition of residents, small businesses, and taxpayers has been formed to launch a campaign to defeat the proposed vacancy tax in South Lake Tahoe. On Wednesday, the El Dorado County Registrar of Voters certified the tax measure after it received enough signatures to qualify for the ballot in November.

Mechanical forest thinning project to begin near South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is scheduled to begin mechanical forest thinning this week on approximately 75 acres located in two locations, one near High Meadows Trail and one near Cascade Properties in South Lake Tahoe. The Lake Valley Mechanical Contract is part of the South Shore Hazardous Fuels Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration Project intended to reduce the risk of severe wildfires near neighborhoods and create healthier forests in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

South Lake Tahoe Vacancy Tax to go on the ballot in November

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The proposed vacancy tax measure in South Lake Tahoe has made it to the November 2024 ballot after the El Dorado County Registrar of Voters verified the 2,471 signatures submitted by Locals for Affordable Housing were sufficient. Only 1,159 valid signatures were needed.

The measure is titled "An Initiative measure to establish a tax on owners of vacant residential units in the City of South Lake Tahoe."

El Dorado County Board of Supervisors direct staff to bring back updated VHR ordinance

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - For the last several months, El Dorado County Supervisor Brooke Laine has coordinated a 13-member advisory group of locals to evaluate the current Vacation Home Rental (VHR) situation and find solutions for any problems that have occurred since its implementation. All viewpoints on VHRs were represented on the advisory group, including those against and for VHRs, and those in the industry.

The Supervisors met in South Lake Tahoe for its weekly meeting on Tuesday, with VHRs one of the Tahoe Basin-focused agenda items.

South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting canceled

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next scheduled meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council on May 21 has been canceled due to a lack of an in-jurisdiction quorum. In order for remote participation by council members, three of the five would have to be in the council chambers. In the case of May 21, only two would have been.

The next council meeting will be held on June 4 at 9 a.m. Agenda items originally scheduled for May 21 will be moved to that date.

National Boating Week highlights need to be safe and responsible on the water

South Lake Tahoe man identified as one of two hikers found deceased on Mt. Whitney

INYO COUNTY, Calif. - The Inyo County Sheriff's Office responded to a call regarding two overdue hikers on Mt. Whitney on Tuesday, May 7 around 8:30 p.m. The hikers intended to descend to the “Notch” with the intention of skiing/snowboarding from the “Notch” back to Upper Boy Scout Lake where they had set up camp. The “Notch” is located on the right side of the face of Mt. Whitney from the Mount Whitney Mountaineer Route.

Douglas County School Board announces six candidates for superintendent job

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School District trustees will decide which of the six candidates for the superintendent position they will interview, and how they will obtain stakeholder feedback at their May 21 meeting.

Applications of the six individuals have been distributed to the trustees along with a screening form where they will individually rank the candidates. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Multiple agencies responded to a stolen car being driven at a high rate of speed between Meyers and Emerald Bay Road on Wednesday afternoon at around 2 p.m. Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) had located a vehicle stolen out of Sacramento. The driver failed to stop and fled at a high rate of speed through the "Y".

Douglas County Commissioners to hold special meeting on final 2024-25 budget

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners are holding a special meeting that will include the final adoption of the County Budget Fiscal Year 24-25. The Town of Gardnerville, Town of Genoa, and Town of Minden will also present their prospective budgets to the Board.

Late season snow causing issues on Lake Tahoe roads
