SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On January 30, 2016, Dennis "Spike" Wright, Jr. died after being shot in front of the Beverly Lodge in South Lake Tahoe after a failed 100-pound marijuana transaction and a subsequent attempted robbery.

Just like 2018, the 2022 Winter Olympics are being held halfway across the globe. Many Olympic events will be taking place while most of us are asleep with the 16 hour time difference between Beijing and South Lake Tahoe.

I first drove Toyota's new Highlander nearly two years ago already, sampling both the Hybrid and non-Hybrid variants. I liked them both for their quality, impressive interiors, and the Hybrid's outrageous real-world fuel economy. But in the meantime, I've had chances to drive some of its rivals. Now, coming back to the Highlander Hybrid, how does it hold up two years into its model run?

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has been awarded $17,359,470 for the Sugar Pine Village project which is planned for the Y area of the city. The grant funds come from the California Strategic Growth Council’s Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) program.

The grant is a critical piece of a complex funding structure that will provide essential financing to develop the 248-unit multi-phase workforce affordable housing project along Julie Lane and Tata Lane and Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

Alpine, Amador, Calavera, Tuolumne, and Mariposa Counties have invested in creating a broadband roadmap for the Central Sierra region and efforts are now underway to identify gaps in broadband service, establish priorities, and to leverage funding opportunities to accelerate investment in broadband infrastructure. This follows what South Lake Tahoe has been involved in.

I have always been very interested in the 56-acre project and saw the latest post about the land swap, etc. I want to STRONGLY object to any idea of putting City and/or County facilities in the 56-acre project area. To do so, would severely compromise the nature of the project for recreation and senior services. Parking would be problematic in this area — the ONE area that the people of South Lake Tahoe have dedicated to their enjoyment and functions. The fact that using the new facility to rent out for events, will already take lots of additional parking.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - — South Lake Tahoe’s first indoor mini-golf course, Flatstick Pub, will be teaming up with the EpicPromise Foundation in order to lift up South Lake Tahoe.

Each Sunday of February, Flatstick Pub will donate $1 for every beer and $1 for every round of mini-golf purchased.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health is welcoming Dr. Jennifer Norris to its network of care providers. Dr. Norris, formerly of Alpine Family Practice, is a board-certified family practice physician who has joined the care team at Barton’s Community Health Center, an outpatient facility providing primary and specialty healthcare services for the Lake Tahoe region.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A Gardnerville man was arrested after a standoff with deputies and booked on domestic violence charges on Tuesday night after he allegedly beat a woman over a period of days.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was a 3.54 magnitude earthquake centered 12.5 miles west of Topaz Lake and south of Markleeville at 5:41 p.m. Tuesday, according to the University of Nevada Reno Seismology Lab. USGS reported the quake at 3.8 magnitude and at a depth of .8 miles.

Several people in South Lake Tahoe reported feeling it.

UNR Seismology placed it at a depth of 13.87 km (8.6 miles).

This was followed by 1.3m, 1.4m, and 1.5m earthquakes closer to the junction of SR89/SR4.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A rash of vehicle burglaries occurred on the South Shore Monday, both in California and Nevada.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to six "smash and grabs" between Whole Foods and Stateline within a 90-minute period on January 31. In the same time frame, deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to three.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) held a promotion ceremony in council chambers Thursday, recognizing staff who have been promoted.

Officer Brian Hannink was promoted to patrol sergeant, Sergeant Jeff Roberson was promoted to lieutenant, and Sergeant Scott Crivelli moved to detective sergeant.

Nevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,150,169,585 for the month of November 2021, a gain of 68.23 percent over the same period in 2020. The South Shore Lake Tahoe casino's win was up 18.95 percent over the same period with their gaming revenue of $18,569,338, according to the State's monthly gaming revenue report.

Last month's report also showed over $18M in gaming revenue on the South Shore and $1.32M for the state of Nevada.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been 308 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths recorded since Friday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 25,183. This does not include all at-home tests that may have been positive. Hospitalizations have been dropping both locally and across the state.

There are now 105.9 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county.

The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) is scheduled to continue widespread prescribed fire operations this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin, conditions and weather permitting. Operations are expected to continue throughout the winter season to help land managers reduce hazardous fuels that can feed unwanted wildfires. Smoke will be present.

For the third consecutive year, partners of the French Meadows Forest Restoration Project have wrapped up another season of forest treatments in the Tahoe National Forest. Despite the challenges of an extremely dangerous fire season in 2021, the French Meadows Partnership safely treated roughly 1,000 acres using a combination of mastication, mechanical thinning, hand thinning and prescribed fires. A portion of this acreage is on private land owned by the American River Conservancy, which has independently raised funds and treated 1,345 acres over several years.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) held its annual awards ceremony on Friday night, celebrating a year of new firefighters, new babies, promotions, and other accomplishments.

SLTFR Chief Clive Savacool led the ceremony with about 60 people filling City Council Chambers. He reflected on 2021 and the challenges the department faced with fires, city evacuations, snowstorms, and power outages, as well as managing the pandemic with sick firefighters and vaccination clinics.

A "thank you" to all of the people who are involved in getting justice for your horrific murder, says mom Janet Wright.

Christopher Andrew William Little, 29, of South Lake Tahoe, born December 21, 1992, died January 25, 2022. He is the son of Duane and Tamara Wallace of South Lake Tahoe and Kevin Little of Tulare. He attended local schools and graduated from STHS in 2011. He was a member of the wrestling team and took the NIAA championship in 2007. Chris was an avid skier, snowboarder, rock climber, and fisherman. He was an electrician and had a dog grooming business called Pup Culture. He accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of 8 and was baptized by his grandfather Rev. Paul Wallace in Lake Tahoe.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service is seeking nominees to fill an opening on the 15-member El Dorado County Resource Advisory Committee. Candidates for the current opening must be a federal land use permit holder or a non-industrial private forest landowner in El Dorado County. Applications are requested by March 1, 2022.
