INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe is hosting a collaborative musical evocation of the natural landscapes of the Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and Pyramid Lake on Wednesday, May 3, at 5 p.m. at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe’s Prim Library.

As part of the college's Talks at Tahoe performance series, musicians and professors in the Department of Music will perform a creative musical evocation of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada.

Summer Theater Camp in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Arts Project and Tahoe Valley Performing Arts are joining together this summer to hold a summer theater camp for children that will be entering grades 1-9 in the fall.

Finding Nemo, Jr will be the play this summer. It is directed by Nicole Mora and Allyssa Little.

Auditions are being held June 23: 1st-3rd graders 9 a.m.-10 a.m., 4th-9th graders 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Everyone who auditions will be in the play.

Rehearsals will be held June 26-July 1, and July 5-July 7.

There will be two performances for the public on July 8 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Tahoe Arts Project Spaghetti Night fundraiser at Bert's Cafe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Arts Project is holding its Spaghetti Night on Thursday, May 25 at Bert's Cafe in South Lake Tahoe. There will be two servings, one from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the other from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

It is $15 per person and includes spaghetti, Caesar salad, garlic bread, soda, and coffee. There will be a bake sale and wine available by donation.

Celebration of Life for Marvin Buchmiller and Michael Clark

A Celebration of Life will be held for Marvin Buchmiller and Michael Clark on Sunday, May 21 at 1 p.m. at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe.

Marvin Buchmiller was a 10-year member of the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra where he served as president during the 2014-15 administrative year. In addition, Marvin worked for more than 30 years with the disabled community members in South Lake Tahoe, helping those less fortunate in obtaining and serving in the job market to what extent their disability would allow.

New parks and recreation director hired for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has announced the hiring of John Stark as its new director of parks and recreation. He will start on May 15.

Stark brings more than 12 years of experience in the parks industry, most recently serving as the director of parks and recreation for the City of Manitou Springs, Colo.

Prescribed fire operations resume around Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Conditions and weather permitting, the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will conduct prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe. Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit are scheduled to continue burning piles along the East Shore beginning today, May 1, 2023. Smoke will be present.

TRPA says possible delays to May 1 grading season at Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Grading and digging season for permitted projects at Lake Tahoe officially begins today, however, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is cautioning that some projects and sites may be delayed due to unseasonal amounts of snow and wet conditions. Property owners and project managers should plan ahead for delays to the start of grading activity and pre-grade inspections, the agency repeated today.

Seasonal closure of Upper Truckee Marsh begins May 1

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Starting May 1, the California Tahoe Conservancy is closing the Upper Truckee Marsh to dogs. This annual seasonal closure protects birds and other wildlife during the breeding season. People must keep dogs away from the sensitive marsh habitat through July 31.

Beginning August 1, people may resume bringing leashed dogs within the closed areas of the Marsh.

El Dorado County supervisors to discuss VHRs at Tuesday meeting

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - On the heels of Supervisor Brooke Laine's community meeting on vacation home rentals (VHRs) in El Dorado County, the Board of Supervisors will receive the same presentation during its May 2 meeting.

The meeting starts at 9 a.m. but Item 45, the VHR portion is time certain for 10 a.m. which means it cannot be heard prior to that though it could be later.

The Board will receive an update on the Vacation Home Rental Program and could direct staff on potential program adjustments and/or amendments to the ordinance.

Winter comes back to Lake Tahoe this week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Spring was nice while it lasted! A slow-moving low-pressure system will provide daily chances for a mix of rain, snow, and pellet showers this week with rain-snow lines lowering to 5500-7000 feet by Tuesday morning. A few thunderstorms will also be possible each day (20-30% chance).

Be prepared for snow showers in the Sierra. While warm road temperatures and the early May sun angle may limit accumulations on paved surfaces, bursts of heavy snow and/or snow occurring during the overnight hours could bring travel impacts to mountain passes.

Motorists should expect delays as gas line replaced between Tahoe City and Kings Beach

PLACER COUNTY – Caltrans is alerting motorists to traffic-interfering work on State Highway 28 for a utility project and pothole repairs starting on Monday, May 1.

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, are working on a gas line replacement project between Tahoe City and Kings Beach. In addition, Caltrans and its contractor, Teichert, will be filling in the many potholes that have emerged on the highway due to this past winter’s heavy precipitation totals. This work is part of an emergency $3.5 million contract to do pavement repairs on sections of Highways 28, 89, and 267.

South Tahoe Vikings JV squads shine In 3A Northern Nevada Track & Field Regional Championships

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High Junior Varsity Vikings, led by Coach Rod Canny III, recently competed in the 3A Northern Nevada Track & Field Regional Championships. Both the Viking boys’ and girls’ squads placed in the competition.

The boys’ squad finished strong, earning 1st place with 109.5 points. The girls’ squad accumulated an admirable 95 points to claim the 3rd spot. The event was held Monday, April 24, 2023, at North Valleys High School in Nevada.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe honors kids and supporters at Bright Futures Award Ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe honored youth and community members during their Bright Futures Awards ceremony on April 26 at the Angel of Tahoe building.

Over 100 people attended as the Club celebrated 15 awardees and their supporters.

Burn permits available May 1 for Amador and El Dorado counties, excluding South Lake Tahoe city limits

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Residential burn permits will be issued starting Monday, May 1 for the El Dorado County portion of Lake Tahoe excluding the city limits, along with the west slope and Amador County. The City of South Lake Tahoe has a ban on all open burning.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Amador-El Dorado Unit made the announcement Friday, but it is unknown how long permits will be available at Lake Tahoe.

Burn permits must now be obtained online at https://burnpermit.fire.ca.gov/.

Wildfire preparedness week May 1-5

Wildfire Preparedness Week brings the USDA Forest Service, CAL FIRE and partner agencies together to host five statewide events, May 1-5, to raise awareness on protecting against the threat of wildfires. None of those are in the Lake Tahoe area, but South Lake Tahoe is having a community-wide wildfire preparedness event on Saturday, May 6 from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center.

South Lake Tahoe City Council to look at increase of taxes and fees to provide more affordable housing

They will also discuss possibly enacting an inclusionary housing ordinance to include an in-lieu fee.

Eldorado National Forest begins Roadside Hazard Tree Mitigation Project on 2400 miles of roads

The Eldorado National Forest is beginning the implementation of their Roadside Hazard Tree Mitigation Project. This project is designed to reduce safety hazards along the 2,461 miles of National Forest System (NFS) roads, including 116 miles of state, local, and private roads in Alpine, Amador, El Dorado, and Placer counties. The project aims to ensure the integrity of the NFS roads and improve safety for the public, Forest Service staff, firefighters, emergency response personnel, law enforcement, private landowners, contractors, special use permit holders, and others.

It has been a popular celebrity tournament at Edgewood Tahoe since 1990, first with Isuzu as a sponsor, then for the last 25 years, American Century Investments.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ten members of South Tahoe High School's Class of 2023 have been honored by the Marcella Foundation with $80,000 in scholarships from the Fannan Fellowship. Named in honor of Marcella Foundation founder Sean Fannan, the fellowship offers scholarships to top-ranking students seeking to become creative problem solvers in any field of study.

Sean Fannan graduated from South Tahoe High School in 2002 and studied at UC Santa Barbara.

South Shore casinos report $16.78M in gaming win, down 34% from one year ago

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,312,090,406 for the month of March 2023, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released Tuesday. This amounts to a 3.8 percent decrease compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,355,201,041. For the fiscal year to date (July 1, 2022 through January 31, 2022), the gaming win has increased by 4.46 percent.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High School Drama Department, under the direction of Ethan Niven, will be performing The Servant of Two Masters for the next two weekends, April 28-30 and May 5-7. The Friday and Saturday shows are at 7 p.m. and the Sunday shows are at 2 p.m.

The Servant of Two Masters is a comedy by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni written in 1746. It has been adapted by Oded Gross and Tracy Young, with music, and additional lyrics by Paul James Pendergas.

UNR test project of recycled-plastic pavement withstood heavy trucks and extreme weather this winter

Asphalt pavement formulated with recycled plastic has successfully survived heavy truck traffic and the atmospheric rivers of the winter of 2022-23 after a section of Highway 99 in California flooded in January.

“It’s a testament to the new technology,” Elie Hajj, professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno and associate director of their Superpave Center, said. “We are conducting extensive performance and environmental testing to get to this asphalt mixture.”

Billy Strings first performer announced for new Tahoe Event Center

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Tahoe Event Center has made the first announcement of a headliner performing at the new center at Stateline. Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician Billy Strings is coming to the new center at Stateline on October 8 during his fall tour. The new center will be opening this summer and includes a 5,500-seat arena with an additional 10,000 square feet of meeting room space and is located along US50 at Bally's Lake Tahoe.

Man wanted in connection with a Bay Area homicide arrested at Lake Tahoe

A man wanted for questioning for his possible involvement in a homicide in Pleasant Hill, California was arrested at Stateline Sunday night.

On Sunday, April 23 at approximately 9:22 p.m., a license plate detector near Kingsbury Grade in Stateline, Nevada alerted law enforcement of a vehicle whose driver had a felony warrant out for his arrest as a person of interest in connection with a Bay Area homicide. The warrant had been issued by the Pleasant Hill Police Department.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Thanks to financial support from the Tahoe Fund and the Merrill Family Foundation, Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) has hired a full-time director to oversee its growing Public Safety programs, including Forestry, Fire Science, Allied Health, and Emergency Medical Services, and Criminal Justice.

Lake Tahoe Basin will see lots of sunshine and rising temperatures this week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most residents of the Lake Tahoe Basin can't wait to start their spring chores around the yard, and the forecast shows they can soon get started (who knew bagging pine needles could be exciting?). The snow will melt quickly this week as a robust ridge of high pressure builds over the west. This pushes high temperatures into the 80s for lower valleys and mid-60s to around 70 for mountain valleys from Thursday through the end of April, if not the first day or two of May.

This will be a significant test of the snowpack and associated snowmelt.

El Dorado County Sheriff's calls in Lake Tahoe area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responds to calls throughout the county. The following are calls that only pertain to the South and West Shore, including Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Meeks Bay, Tahoma, and the Echo Summit area.
