Auditions being held for new Lake Tahoe Community College musical - Seussical

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Theater is back at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC). Auditions are being held on Friday, April 14 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. for a new musical, Seussical.

Erik Baker, the college's new theater teacher and part of the winning duo at Dancing With The Tahoe Stars in October. He is now looking for a diversity of actors and actresses, and of a wide range of ages to match the message of the musical.

Marcus Ashley, South Lake Tahoe's purveyor of Dr. Seuss art, is donating artwork for the set.

The show will be running June 9-18.

Volunteers needed for South Lake Tahoe Science Expo

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Parents and community members interested in sharing science with local youth are needed for this year's South Lake Tahoe Science Expo April 17-21, 2023.

This year's theme is Life and Health Sciences and activities will focus on organisms and ecosystems, inheritance and adaptation, and health and nutrition. No experience is necessary and all volunteers will be trained on how to do activities at the stations the students will be visiting.

Sierra squirrels find their niche mid a changing climate

As the climate changes, many species are expected to adjust where and how they live. LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - When Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle Corp., spent $35.8 million in 2017 to buy the Cal Neva Lodge in bankruptcy court, many hoped he'd bring his Midas touch to Lake Tahoe and the aging resort.

Now six years later, the almost 100-year-old resort once owned by Frank Sinatra has been sold again, this time to McWhinney, a leading real estate investment, development, and management firm out of Colorado.

South Lake Tahoe's new state senator stops by town to meet the community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - California Senate District 4 is big, stretched out over 13 counties including 22 cities from Truckee to Cameron Park, down to Modesto, over to Death Valley, and up to Mammoth and South Lake Tahoe. The new California State Senator for the district, Marie Alvarado-Gil, returned to South Lake Tahoe this week to meet with constituents, this time at South Lake Brewing Company.

Alvarado-Gil is the first woman to ever serve the region and the Democrat to do so in 30 years. This is her first foray into state politics and she is quickly finding its where she belongs.

Drug Store Project extends gratitude to the community

“Choices, what are yours?” continues to be the theme of our efforts in keeping our youth drug free. I want to thank the many agencies, service clubs, businesses, and volunteers who provided the 20th Annual Drug Store Project event on April 4, 2023, at South Tahoe Middle School. Teaching our youth about the dangers of all drugs; marijuana, alcohol, tobacco, e-cigarettes, over the counter as well as prescriptive medications, gets more challenging each year.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care annual volunteer signups now being accepted

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 2023 volunteer season starts soon at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC). Anyone wishing to help out at the nonprofit must go through this training.

Each year, LTWC cares for hundreds of wild birds and animals. Their dedicated animal care and operations teams, along with seasonal volunteers, provide the needed medical care, nourishment, and skill-building to ensure a patient’s successful return to the wild.

Activities and awareness in Douglas County during National Autism Awareness Month

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – April is National Autism Awareness Month, and to raise awareness, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) wrapped a vehicle with colorful puzzle pieces for the fourth consecutive year. The special wrap offers a way for children and adults with autism to meet the DCSO team in a casual setting and to encourage caretakers of those on the spectrum to sign up for the Douglas County Autism Recognition Alert Program.

Mask requirements end for Barton and other California healthcare systems

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For three years there has been a mask mandate in place for hospitals and healthcare facilities due to COVID-19, but as of Monday that is no longer the case. In accordance with California Department of Public Health guidelines, Barton Health has updated its universal masking guidelines for patients and visitors.

As of Monday, April 3, face masks are optional at all Barton Health facilities with some exceptions, said Barton Infection Prevention Manager Jake Vinocur.

Increased law enforcement on campuses after Douglas County schools receive threat

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to an anonymous threat made to the county's schools on Wednesday. Undersheriff Ron Elges said they received the threat against no particular school or location so they sent deputies to every school.

Elges said they "force multiplied" to schools to conduct area checks and to be visible to any possible threats. He reported nothing was found suspicious and no further reports or threats.

Coyote dies from pellet shot into spine in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A coyote found with injuries in the Heavenly Valley area and taken to Lake Tahoe Wildlife (LTWC) has died. The coyote was seen dragging its hind legs and trying to crawl under a trailer to get to safety when a nearby resident rescued him and took him to the care center late last week.

X-rays revealed the coyote had been shot in the spine by what appeared to be a plastic pellet, possibly from a BB gun or Airgun.

Rubicon Trail wins championship round in Tahoe Fund trail bracket contest

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Congratulations to the 2023 Tahoe Trails Madness Champion: the Rubicon Trail! The Rubicon entered this tournament as one of the favorites, known for its great lake views, accessibility, and recognizable name.

The champ went up against some tough competition in the Tahoe Fund tournament, facing Ellis Peak in the first round and Mt. Tallac in the second. In the Final Four, Rubicon easily topped Eagle Rock and the Marlette Flume Trail to bring home the title.

Sorenson's Resort to host new Chautauqua performance “There It Is…Take It!”

Sorenson’s Resort (formerly Wylder Hotel) in Hope Valley, continues its Eastern Sierra History series with a Chautauqua performance “There It Is…Take It!” on Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m.

Local author and historian David Woodruff assumes the character of the dreamer, designer, constructor, and despot of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, William Mulholland. Abhorred in the Eastern Sierra and revered in Southern California, "Bill” brought a river from 233 miles away, so the City of Angels could grow into a great metropolis. It left a rural, agrarian community in ruins.

Snowpack at Mt. Rose at 211 percent of the median, Lake Tahoe Basin 246 percent

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - As the California water officials were conducting their monthly snow survey on Monday, Nevada officials were doing the same. Much of the western Sierra snowpack sends snowmelt into California, but the Lake Tahoe Basin except Echo Lakes, and the eastern slopes send the snowmelt into Nevada so the height and snow water equivalent (SWE) are important to both states.

Highway 89 around Emerald Bay now open

It took several weeks and challenges with storms and snow slides, but Caltrans crews have been able to get SR89 open around Emerald Bay.

The road opened over the weekend though there were two small slides both to the north and south of the Emerald Bay portion of the highway. They were quickly cleared and the road never closed though there were chain controls Monday morning due to the snow.

South Lake Tahoe City Council to hold evening meeting Tuesday

Sierra snowpack is one of largest ever at 237% of average

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a lot of snow in the Sierra and around Lake Tahoe, with a new record passe with each storm all winter long. Today, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) had its monthly measurement of snow at Phillips Station, west of Lake Tahoe near Sierra-at-Tahoe as well as at other locations in California.

Tahoe Amateur Radio Association holding FCC license session

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - “HAM” Radio is ideal for health and welfare type emergency communications, learning the actual “mechanics” of 2-way radio operations, and making contacts with areas you would not experience otherwise (like contacting the international space station!)

The Federal Communication Commission requires one to obtain an Amateur radio license to use a two-way radio on amateur radio frequencies.

The Technician license is the entry-level license, but allows you to talk from across town to around the world and more!

TTD Bus runs into Beverly Lodge in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) bus ran into the back of the Beverly Lodge Friday night, causing significant damage to the bus and the motel.

At 6:58 p.m. on March 31, 2023, first responders were dispatched to the motel.

For reasons not known at this time, a bus coming from the direction of the Bijou Golf Course on Fairway Drive went straight into the motel and did not make a right turn onto Fairway Avenue as scheduled.

Man arrested for possession of stolen vehicle minutes after allegedly stealing packages in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Quick actions by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) caught the man suspected of stealing packages from a porch and closed a stolen vehicle case, all in one arrest.

CAL FIRE updates the Fire Hazard Severity Zone Map

The public comment period has been extended until April 4 for the final 2022 CAL FIRE Fire Hazard Severity Zone Map. This map shows the fire hazard severity for all properties in the state for which the agency has primary fire prevention/suppression responsibility.

That includes all land that is not federal (such as National Forest land), and all land that is not already in a Local Responsibility Area (LRA). The City of South Lake Tahoe is the only LRA in the Lake Tahoe basin.

Two Lake Tahoe trails facing off in Tahoe Fund bracket contest

Two rival trails from opposite sides of the lake are set to square off in the Tahoe Trails Madness Championship this weekend! The Rubicon Trail is taking on the Marlette Flume Trail in the battle to be crowned the best trail Tahoe has to offer.

This dramatic championship pits the West Shore against the East Shore, California against Nevada, and two epic trails against one another. This promises to be a matchup for the ages!

Douglas County hires new emergency management director

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Kara Easton has been hired as Douglas County’s new Emergency Management Director. Easton most recently served the City of Las Vegas as the Emergency Management Specialist, where she served in the role since 2016.

New management company for the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a new management company for the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA). FirstService Residential assumed management on February 1, 2023, for the 60-year-old association.

FirstService Residential's northern California operations have grown over the past several years to 100-plus associations. The total number of homes under management has seen a 30 percent increase, now topping 53,000. There are 1528 homes within the TKPOA boundary including a 740-acre marina and eleven miles of inland waterways.
