SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High School Student Art Showcase will be held at Emanate Gallery June 9-11.

Emanate Gallery is inside the Crossing at Tahoe Valley. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, June 9 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Art and photography will be displayed for parents and the community to view and enjoy.

Emanate Gallery is located at 2030 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. They are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Magnet School Talent Show

The Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School is holding an outdoor talent show on Tuesday, June 7 at 5 p.m. Not only will there be great talent on the stage, but also a fruit cart, Crepes and Craft food truck, and face painting stations.

The Laine family has had a cabin in Christmas Valley for 88 years (!) which the family enjoys each summer. When the Calder fire roared up the canyon, Brooke and a neighbor didn't wait for help. They cleared 85 bags of duff from the forest floor and built a firebreak the length of six cabins. No one else was doing it, so they did.

One last word is needed before we all vote on Tuesday or mail in our ballots. That is Mental Health – I realize that is two words, but the problem is also twice as big as most people realize. This is especially true in our city and county.

Counties in California are assigned the job of providing mental health services by the State of California. It probably comes as no surprise that most of the office staff and mental health workers live and work in Placerville. Yet we are the largest city in the entire county.

Lake Wind Advisory at Lake Tahoe through Sunday, 60% chance of rain

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe. The advisory is in effect until 11 p.m. Sunday.

Winds will be from the southwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Waves on the lake will be 2 to 4 feet.

Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

2022 Fire Season underway - restrictions now in place in all districts around Lake Tahoe

The Lake Valley Fire Protection District, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, and North Lake Tahoe Fire District have all implemented 2022 fire restrictions in line with those previously announced by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, Meeks Bay Fire, and North Tahoe Fire. This means, as of June 1, almost all fire protection districts around the lake are on the same page when it comes to what is, and isn't, allowed where outdoor fires and barbeques are concerned.

Runners with Reno-Tahoe Odyssey 2022 heading through South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two-hundred-forty-two teams took off from Reno today on the annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay. The relay teams go 24/7 until ending back in Reno on Saturday.

Runners will be seen this evening through the South Shore.

The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey course is like no other, given the combination of natural scenery, world-class attractions, and historical points of interest. It is a physical and mental challenge for all runners, yet at the same time, it’s a fair course.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 73rd annual fun of the Historic Wagon Trail kicks off on the South Shore this Sunday, but the Lake Tahoe Historical Society (LTHS) has created an event for Saturday to celebrate the western history of the region.

Rattlesnakes not as uncommon as they once were around Lake Tahoe

Prior to 2015, rattlesnakes were not seen in the Lake Tahoe Basin. It was that year when a large rattlesnake from underneath the porch of a home in the Bijou neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe.

"That was the first documented rattlesnake within the Lake Tahoe Basin that we, or anyone in the Tahoe Biologist Interagency Group, are aware of," said Dr. Will Richardson said at the time in a story he wrote.

Richardson is the executive director of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS).

This time-honored tradition is free to all children aged 14 years and younger. Fishing tackle and bait are available. There will also be expert guidance from Tahoe Fly Fishing.

New fire restrictions start June 1 in South Lake Tahoe city limits, other agencies expected to follow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - 2022 fire season restrictions are now in place for the City of South Lake Tahoe and will remain in place until further notice.

Starting Wednesday, June 1, no charcoal or wood fires are permitted in the city limits. The use of natural gas (NG), propane (LPG), or pellet BBQ grills, smokers, and firepits are permissible unless a red flag warning is issued.

Douglas County man dies in rollover crash in Glenbrook

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - A Gardnerville man died on May 21, 2022 in a single vehicle rollover crash in the area of Old Highway 50 and Prey Meadow in the Glenbrook area of Lake Tahoe.

Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to a report of the crash at 3:45 p.m.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a red 2010 GMC Canyon pickup was traveling west on private property when, for unknown reasons, went off the roadway to the left and overturned. The driver was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Free fishing and entry at state parks during “Discover Nevada State Parks” Day

Bob Cook ~ 11/22/48 - 12/31/21

Unexpectedly leaving this earthly planet on December 31, 2021, Bob Cook’s life was, and is, the definition of service to others. Born in Southern California on November 22, 1948, Bob moved to Zephyr Cove, Nev. in 1971 after serving honorably in the U.S. Army in the late 60s/early 70s during
the Vietnam War with the 82nd “Hell Cats” as a Door-Gunner for his brother Jeff, among other duties.

Bob earned a degree in Fire Science and worked for the Tahoe-Douglas Fire Department where he became a Firefighter/Bomb Squad Technician. Bob later worked for UPS until his retirement in 2002.

Tahoe Expedition Academy offers Math Enrichment Camp this summer

TRUCKEE, Calif. – Tahoe Expedition Academy (TEA) is taking students on an adventure of the mind this summer. TEA is hosting a Summer Math Enrichment Program (aka “Math Camp”) for students entering grades 5-9 in the 2022-2023 school year. Sessions are two weeks each from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. each day, Monday through Thursday. Students can attend one, two, or all three sessions.

Farmer's Market season in South Lake Tahoe opens Friday with Ski Run Market

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though spring has been a bit of a roller coaster weather and temperature-wise at Lake Tahoe, growers have been able to get their products ready for farmer's markets.

The 2022 Ski Run Farmers Market opens on Friday, June 3, and will run every Friday night until September 16. The market takes place from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. They have veggies, fruit, nuts, coffee, gifts, art, food trucks, music, and a "darn good time." This community gathering takes place in the middle of Ski Run Boulevard about halfway between Pioneer Trail and Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Mechanical whole tree thinning project starts near South Lake Tahoe neighborhood

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Equipment is being moved into the neighborhood and powerline corridor near Montgomery Estates in preparation for a mechanical whole tree thinning operation that will start this week. Work is scheduled to begin in Montreal Units 6, 26, and 1006 (see map above) at the end of High Meadows Trail off of Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Sadly, every year there are drownings in Lake Tahoe, and 2022 has already seen the first death on the lake.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities in 2020, and that 86 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

Tahoe Paradise Park hosts annual ‘Return to Paradise’ event in Meyers

Two men hospitalized after fireworks incident at Moonrocks, north of Reno

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - Two men are hospitalized after a fireworks incident turned catastrophic early Sunday morning during a large gathering of about 500 people at Moonrocks, north of Spanish Springs, Nev.

According to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO), they responded to a report of gunfire, but as they were responding found a much different scene just after midnight on May 29, 2022.

As a lifetime resident of El Dorado County, I’ve seen my share of City Council members and County Supervisors. Some were excellent leaders and others struggled to live up to the task of taking what the citizens wanted and turning it into public policy. Others faded in times of crisis.

We have four people running for County Supervisor this time. The one I know best and am voting for is Tamara Wallace because she has proven, not just promised, that she can do those important two things.
