The South Lake Tahoe Library will host Magician Brian Scott online via Zoom and Facebook Live on Friday, July 10 at 2:00 p.m. Participants will enjoy fun, silly magic on the other side of the screen, as well as learn how to perform a few tricks of their own!
Grab a deck of cards, a dollar bill and a quarter and you will be ready to perform magic too. Perfect for all ages.
Numbers Fire at 17,318 acres and now 20% contained
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/09/2020 - 8:31amThe Numbers Fire has been measured at 17,318 acres and firefighters now have a line around 20 percent of the area.
The cause of the fire, which started on July 6 at approximately 7:00 p.m., is under investigation. At one time over 350 residents had been asked to evacuate. Road closures and most evacuation areas in Douglas County have been lifted. The area of Pinenut 2 Road East of Out Our Way is still under evacuation orders.
Three homes have been lost or damaged along with 37 outbuildings. Burned has been grass, brush, pinyon-juniper.
Genoa's famous and historic Candy Dance canceled for 2020

In a 5-0 vote Wednesday, the Genoa Town Advisory Board decided to forego the event due to health and safety concerns for residents, vendors, staff and sponsors.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/08/2020 - 5:19pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There have been another 16 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County. Seven of the new cases were in El Dorado Hills, five in the Lake Tahoe region of the county, three in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, and one in Placerville. Of the new cases, one is under 18, ten are aged 18-49, four aged 50-64 and one in the 65+ group. Nine are male, seven are female.
Six more people have recovered, with 129 active cases. There has been no change to hospitalization figures and two remain in the ICU. There is one suspected COVID-19 patient in the ICU.
Lake Tahoe Unified School District reopening plans to be discussed at July 14 meeting

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees will hear a draft proposal on what the reopening of school in the fall will look like at during a special meeting on July 14 at 5:00 p.m.
"We are in a unique time for public schools. We have been challenged to create plans for the start of the 2020/21 school year that will provide a quality education for our students and at the same time provide safety for us all. This is not an easy task," new LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler said in his weekly email to staff, parents, and the public.
NDOT tends to Numbers Fire damage as Highway 395 reopens
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/08/2020 - 3:21pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has reopened Highway 395, deeming it safe to travel. The road has been closed due to the Numbers Fire.
Crews have been working on guard rails damaged by the fire which has burned 20,000 acres and is currently 5 percent contained. Three homes and 37 outbuildings have been lost or damaged.
Man arrested in connection with Sunday's three Lake Tahoe area fires

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe has 17 percent of El Dorado County's population but around half of the confirmed COVID-19 cases. With a steady increase in confirmed cases over the last few weeks combined with the 4th of July influx of visitors, the County's Public Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams is looking at the possibility of more restrictive measures for businesses and the public.
Numbers Fire at 18,000 acres, 5% contained; Investigation into cause

Anyone who happened to be traveling on Highway 395 between Ridgeview and Holbrook Junction on July 6 between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. is being asked to help.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/07/2020 - 6:22pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There were four new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County Tuesday, with two of those in the Lake Tahoe region, one from Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue area and one from El Dorado Hills. All are in the 18-49-years-old age group.
The total count only changed by two due to one person's location being misidentified and another was a duplicate entry, according to county officials.
There were two new recoveries, bringing that total to 145, leaving 119 active cases.
One dies in single-engine plane crash near South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/07/2020 - 3:00pmUPDATE 6:23 p.m.: One person died in Tuesday's crash of a single-engine plane in Meyers. At 3:23 p.m., El Dorado County Sheriff Deputies responded to the report of the crash near the Forest Service homes on Rainbow Road.
When Deputies arrived, they found a single-engine plane "crumpled and upside down" in a wooded area. There were two people on board the plane. One person was deceased and the other was taken to Renown Hospital in Reno via helicopter. Their condition is unknown at this time.

Special Board of Supervisors meeting to discuss COVID-19 related enforcement

The board will receive an update on the status of COVID cases in El Dorado County and provide direction to staff regarding enforcement against businesses and individuals who fail to comply with state and local health requirements.
Bike racks still available through Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition and Tahoe Fund

They have now announced an opportunity for more low or no-cost bike racks in their "Bike Racks for Tahoe" program for centrally-located town center locations in the Tahoe Basin.
The program is designed to encourage locals and visitors to ride their bikes around lakeside communities instead of drive.
Tuesday: Numbers Fire south of Gardnerville now at 18,000 acres and 0% containment

The recommended evacuations for the Bodie Flats and Pineview areas have been lifted. Only residents are allowed to these areas. Please drive safely, watch for emergency vehicles, and be ready for possible future instructions in an ever-changing situation.
Multiple local, state, and federal agencies continue to work on containing the fire using dozers, hand crews, and aircraft.

Of those cases, two are under the age of 18, 18 are in the age group 18-49, 11 in the 50-64-year-old groups, and five 65 and older.
Eighteen are in the Lake Tahoe region, seven in El Dorado Hills, four in Greater Placerville, three in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, two in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, and two in Diamond Springs/El Dorado.
Abundance of "miller moths" around Lake Tahoe this year

Miller moths, or the army cutworm, have become a nuisance in many parts of Lake Tahoe over the last few weeks, but not all areas have been affected. Those who have them around their homes are seeing dozens each night, swarming around their lights both inside and outside.

Funds raised from this event support the Lake Tahoe College Promise program that provides up to three years of tuition-free college for eligible students of all ages, a free textbook lending library, and the Lake Tahoe Community College Food Pantry, which provides crucial nutrition and personal hygiene products to LTCC’s neediest students.
Red Flag Warning and Lake Wind Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin to start off the week
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/05/2020 - 8:56pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Lake Wind Advisory in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday, July 6. There is also a Red Flag Warning from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday.
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued the Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low humidity. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect. Winds will be from the Southwest 15-20 mph with gusts 30-35 mph. The humidity will be 12-20 percent for the duration.
Investigation underway into cause of three wildfires on Echo Summit

Named the Echo, Upper, and Lake Fires by the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), all were kept from spreading due to a quick response by local, state and federal resources along with air support. They were all in the Echo Lakes area.
The cause of these fires is under investigation according to LTBMU. Scanner reports during the day stated all three could possibly be intentionally set but that has yet to be confirmed. No other information is available at this time.
Embarc Tahoe dispensary now open in South Lake Tahoe

Embarc Tahoe has opened its doors and held an official ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday with Mayor Jason Collin, Mayor Pro Tem Tamara Wallace, members of the Embarc Tahoe team and the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce.
Owner Christy Wilson moved into what was once Tahoe Teriyaki and has since been several different businesses.

With the expected biological, emotional and mental change, it’s easy to underestimate just how much adolescents must cope with. As moods and appetites consistently change, it can be difficult to notice if an adolescent is experiencing any mental or emotional distress. However, noticing any change in the mental health condition of adolescents is important for early intervention and treatment.

Fundraiser underway to repair South Lake Tahoe dog's broken femur

Just over a week ago Titan, an 11-month-old puppy, was chasing a chipmunk and went over a cliff trying to catch it. In the fall he broke his femur.
Demetrius Prunty, the dog daddy, lost his job due to COVID-19 closures and hasn't been able to get the dog's leg repaired. The $2,500 fundraising request is to pay for Titan's doctor bills.
Prunty, who has lived in South Lake Tahoe for four years, adopted Titan after his birth in August 2019.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/03/2020 - 5:16pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say there were 20 more confirmed cases of COVID-19 since Thursday with 11 in the Lake Tahoe region, four in El Dorado Hills, one in Diamond Springs/El Dorado, two in Greater Placerville, and two in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue.
There were three new recoveries leaving 95 active cases. Two people were released from local hospitals, leaving three hospitalized and one in the ICU. There are also two suspected COVID-19 cases in the ICU.
There have been 236 additional tests given.

Tax-Aide sites will not reopen due to safety concerns

The FTC’s acceptance of the consent order satisfies all required antitrust clearances for the merger and allows Eldorado to move forward with the merge plans.
The selling of MontBleu Resort Casino in Stateline by Eldorado is part of the deal as Caesars Entertainment already owns both Harveys and Harrah's Lake Tahoe, MontBleu's neighbors.
CEO of Tahoe Prosperity Center to co-chair statewide economic recovery group

Boaters asked to "Party Smartly" at American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe

The tournament will be held July 8-12 and Patrick Mahomes, Tony Romo, Jerry Rice, Steph Curry and his dad Dell Curry, and a host of others from the entertainment, sports, and broadcasting fields will be in Lake Tahoe for the annual event.
COVID-19 testing at Lake Tahoe Community College through July
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/02/2020 - 6:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - COVID-19 testing will continue in the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Physical Education building through the end of July, at a minimum.
The LTCC virus testing site is the only large scale site in El Dorado County after the site at Ponderosa High School in Shingle Springs closed. There has since opened a testing site in El Dorado Hills.
The decision to continue using the facility as a testing site will be made on a month-to-month basis going forward.
Investigators seek information from the public on Poeville Fire in Reno
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/02/2020 - 5:38pmRENO, Nev. - The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District is seeking information regarding the start of the Poeville Fire on Peavine Mountain in Reno. The cause of the fire is under investigation and fire officials are asking for information from the public who might have seen something during the time frame of 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. June 27, 2020.
As of Thursday evening, the fire is 95 percent contained and has burned 2,975 acres of grass and sage. Crews on the scene are working on fire suppression repair.

Health officials report eight new confirmed cases with two in El Dorado Hills, one in the Diamond Springs/El Dorado area, one in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue area, and one person's regional address is unknown at this time.
Of the new cases, six are male, two female, one is under the age of 18, six in the 18-49 age group and one in the 50-64-year-old group.
251 new tests for the coronavirus were conducted.
Investigation leads to return of custom bar top to brewery in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/02/2020 - 3:16pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Finding a truck with stolen license plates on Tuesday has led to the recovery of a custom made bar top from a South Lake Tahoe brewery.
On June 30, 2020, deputies from El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) got an LPR (License Plate Reader) hit on a truck in Meyers.
The truck was traveling west on US50 and deputies found the truck near Ice House Road and attempted a traffic stop. The driver turned onto a rocky dirt road, stopped by the American River and took off on foot.

Responsible recreation is urged over the 4th of July weekend at Lake Tahoe

The July Fourth holiday at Lake Tahoe will look a bit different this year with firework shows canceled, social distancing, the requirement of face coverings in public places and growing concerns about responsible recreation.
Man wanted by US Marshals arrested in South Lake Tahoe after pursuit

Matthew Core, a 38-year-old man from the Sacramento area had been in federal custody in the Sacramento jail when he was released due to COVID-19, then went on the run according to SLTPD Detective Sgt. Travis Cabral.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/01/2020 - 5:05pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials have announced 14 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the county, five in the Lake Tahoe region, three in Greater Placerville, three in El Dorado Hills, one in the Pollock Pines/Camino and Kyburz area, one in the Diamond Springs/El Dorado area and one in the Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue area. Of the new cases, nine are males, five are females, 13 in the 18-49 age group, and one in the 50-64-year-old group.
There have been an additional three recoveries, leaving 73 active cases.

Over the last four months, we have learned a lot about COVID-19 transmission, most notably that people who are infected but are asymptomatic or presymptomatic play an important part in community spread. This year’s theme is “Fight fire with a plan” to encourage residents and visitors to prepare their family, property and possessions now before a wildfire starts by creating a plan.

Assemble a Go-bag and a disaster supply kit for your home and vehicle.
Create and maintain defensible space around homes.

Workout With Law Enforcement Day for Douglas County Special Olympics

Members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office worked-out alongside the athletes, cheering each other on, just as they do at the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run event.
STPUD survey for South Lake Tahoe well owners

For participation in the survey the District is offering guidance on well maintenance, a free site check to help prevent contamination from entering the well, and free water testing to understand the well’s water quality.
