UC Davis study shows resilience in frequent-fire forests may require significantly reducing tree densities
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/19/2022 - 12:08pmWhat does a “resilient” forest look like in California’s Sierra Nevada? A lot fewer trees than we’re used to, according to a study of frequent-fire forests from the University of California, Davis.
More than a century ago, Sierra Nevada forests faced almost no competition from neighboring trees for resources. The tree densities of the late 1900s would astonish most Californians today. Because of fire suppression, trees in current forests live alongside six to seven times as many trees as their ancestors did — competing for less water amid drier and hotter conditions.

Women in Leadership event rescheduled due to rise in COVID-19 cases

Tahoe Chamber and the Women in Leadership Task Force values and prioritizes health, safety, and overall well-being. In anticipation of International Women’s Day on March 8, they look forward to connecting in person with the same workshops and expert guest speakers at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

COVID-19 cases for South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 22,039. This does not include at-home tests that may have been positive.
There are now 144.6 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/18/2022 - 3:45pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With COVID-19 cases continuing to surge not only in South Lake Tahoe but around the country, some new temporary restrictions are going to be added to the functions of Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD.
It is the largest surge in cases within the LTUSD community that has been seen since the pandemic began.
LTUSD will be implementing some changes to achieve their main goal of keeping students in the classroom and the district open five days per week.

Keep Tahoe Blue says Lahontan Water Board approval of Tahoe Keys Control Methods Test on the right path

The final approval will be needed from Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). They will hold a public hearing on January 26 and possibly take action on the methods test.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/17/2022 - 4:31pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will reopen for in-person instruction on Tuesday, January 18. They closed classrooms on Thursday and Friday due to a rise in COVID-19 cases among staff and students.
They will continue to monitor the health of staff to ensure LTUSD can remain operational. Staying home if ill will help the school community return to a healthy status.
20-foot snowman created in Lake Tahoe yard
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/17/2022 - 12:37pmSTATELINE, Nev. - With record amounts of snow around Lake Tahoe in December, many took to the slopes, spent time shoveling, stayed by the fire, or a little bit of all three.
South Shore resident Ricky Reich decided to build a 20-foot snowman in his front yard on Irvin Drive in Stateline with all of that fresh snow. With sunny, warmer days he needs to go out and clean it up a bit.
Ricky is no stranger to big snowmen and has previously made his snowmen with a sled run (see video here).

DCSO seeking public's help in finding those responsible for Pacific Gas Station burglary

On or about December 23, 2021, Pacific Gas Station was burglarized and all r leads have been exhausted, prompting DCSO to ask for the public’s assistance at this time.
The person(s) responsible stole a large inventory of various brands of tobacco products.
Wind and waves cause significant damage to Tahoe Douglas Fire's Marine 24
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/15/2022 - 10:29pmZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - A recent Lake Tahoe storm with wind gusts of 65 mph and above and waves 6-8 feet high caused damage to Marine 24, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District's (TDFPD) fire and rescue boat.
The winds caused the boat to crash against the dock, causing significant damage. The boat then floated to the shoreline.
"We expect the boat to be out of service for fire and rescue missions for
the foreseeable future, while Tahoe Douglas personnel work diligently to get Marine 24 back afloat and fully operational," said TDFPD Fire Marshal Eric Guevin in a statement.

Julie went to the emergency room just after New year's Day, thinking perhaps she had a stroke. Instead, a CT scan unveiled a mass and she was transferred to the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).
Surge of COVID-19 cases leaves many in search of tests, vaccines, answers

Barton Health said they are experiencing high volumes of patients accessing the health system partially due to the increase in COVID cases. Currently, the majority of positive cases are among people able to recover at home, and hospitalization admissions are currently stable, although expected to increase as COVID continues to spread.

Forest Service land purchase adds almost 500 acres to Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/13/2022 - 4:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three parcels in South Lake Tahoe have been acquired by the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU). The land, located in the Upper Cold Creek watershed, is 487.5 acres in size. The purchase allows the land to be added to the National Forest System (NFS) of lands within the LTBMU for conservation and public enjoyment.
Funding for the purchase came from the Bureau of Land Management under the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act, which provides federal funds from land sales in southern Nevada.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A distribution center for Caldor Fire survivors will be set up on Sunday, January 16 at Pioneer Elementary School from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. They will have tarps, ropes, toys, heaters, lanterns, and other items.

LTUSD nurses unable to contact students with possible COVID-19 exposure

Due to the drastic increase in COVID-positive staff and students, school nurses are unable to notify each individual student of exposure at this time. COVID positives have increased at every location exponentially and affect almost every classroom district-wide, according to LTUSD leadership.
Douglas County closes Zephyr Cove Elementary and Whittell High School due to COVID-19
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/12/2022 - 6:15pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School District is looking at its schools on a case-by-case basis when dealing with staffing shortages and student call-outs due to COVID-19.
As of Wednesday, the District announced that Whittell High will close Thursday, and since they normally have Fridays off and there is a Monday holiday, students will return on Tuesday, January 18.
Zephyr Cove Elementary School closed on Tuesday due to an outbreak with staff and they were able to pivot to remote learning quickly according to DCSD Superintendent Keith Lewis.

LTUSD leadership said this decision was not being made lightly, but through a process of careful evaluation and consultation with administrators and staff.
2021 was 4th warmest year on record with record warmest December in US

COVID-19 testing updates for LTUSD staff and students
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/12/2022 - 8:07amThere has been a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 tests administered at the Al Tahoe school site for students and staff of Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) over the past few days.
LTUSD is currently out of PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests, and rapid antigen tests are only available at this time. They are working with the California Department of Health to get more of the PCR tests by Thursday.

TOCCATA performance of BRRRoque Masters cancels one performance
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/11/2022 - 3:56pmThe Tahoe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus (TOCCATA) performance of BRRRoque Masters 2022 scheduled for St John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Glenbrook has been canceled. The cancelation comes due to due to new COVID mandadtes from the church. The orchestra would not fit into the sanctuary with six-feet distancing.
Tickets already purchased can be used at any of the following shows or upcoming February events:
Saturday, January 15 at 3:00 p.m., Christ the King, Tahoe City
Sunday, January 16 at 3:00 p.m. at The Cornerstone Church, Incline Village (note location change)
Nine acts booked so far for the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena in summer 2022

Some are a rebooking of missed concerts due to the pandemic, others are on new tours. More concerts are expected to be added to the schedule

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In light of the current COVID-19 outbreak, Tahoe Arts Project has decided to postpone its popular fundraiser, Dancing with the Tahoe Stars. It has moved from March to October 15, 2022.
"We have made this decision for the health and safety of the community," the non-profit said in a statement.
