Volunteers wanted to get the word out to the public so those who use the food bank won't attempt to go out in the snow.
They will announce Tuesday if they will also be closed Wednesday.
Christmas Cheer is located at 1120 3rd Street, South Lake Tahoe.
South Lake Tahoe CHP to offer free teen driver safety classes

This Start Smart program is aimed at helping newly licensed and future licensed teenage drivers become aware of the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of being a licensed California driver. The program was created in an effort to preemptively reduce the incidence of teen injuries and deaths resulting from motor vehicle collisions.

UPDATE: Due to forecasts and flights, the weather has once again forced the cancelation of TJ Carter and Band.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - TJ Carter and Band will be performing in South Lake Tahoe schools on March 9 and 10, and in a public show at Lake Tahoe Community College Duke Theater on March 10 at 6 p.m.
"It is a dream come true to be able to come back to Tahoe to share and inspire students through musical art and education," said TJ Carter.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/26/2023 - 8:18pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District has announced there will be no school on Monday, February 27. Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe will also be closed.
With heavy snow and forecasted blizzard conditions, the District wanted students and staff to remain safe and not on the roads of South Lake Tahoe.
They will continue monitoring the forecast and will provide an update Monday evening about school on Tuesday. The blizzard forecast is expected to end early Wednesday morning.
Bread & Broth Monday meal canceled due to storm

It isn't often the group cancels meals, but for the safety of guests and volunteers, the non-profit won't serve this Monday.
On Friday, their Second Serving meal at Lake Tahoe Presbyterian Church is still planned.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Blizzard could drop 2-3 feet of snow at lake level, up to 6 feet at upper elevations

NTSB says downed Care Flight plane broke apart prior to crashing near Stagecoach
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/26/2023 - 5:37pmThe National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) held a press conference Sunday in Carson City regarding the downed Care Flight airplane that crashed in Stagecoach on Friday night.
During the conference, it was confirmed that the plane's wing had broken off mid-flight only about 14 minutes after it had taken off.

Mark "Bear" Rand was on his way to Utah to receive life-saving medical treatment, and he was accompanied by his wife Terri.
"Mark and Terri were big-hearted, family-oriented, proud parents and grandparents. The Rand family is now coming together to figure out how to move forward," said the post on Go Fund Me.

Because of this, they have issued a Blizzard Warning for Lake Tahoe and the Eastern Sierra starting at 10 a.m. Monday, through 4 a.m. Wednesday. During this period, total snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet, except 4 to 6 feet above 7000 feet are expected. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph with over 100 mph along Sierra ridgetops.

Bill was born to Captain C.D. Murrell, head of Naval Intelligence in San Diego, and Nancy Jane Murrell on February 11, 1946.
Care Flight plane crashes near Stagecoach, killing all five on board

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office said they received multiple calls about a possible airplane crash at approximately 9:15 p.m. Deputies were joined by Lyon County and Douglas County search and rescue teams, and Central Lyon Fire in a search of the area. At 11:15 p.m., the aircraft was located and there were no survivors.

Two Lake Tahoe area ski resorts first to announce extended seasons

Caltrans closes westbound lanes of I-80 after multiple collisions
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/24/2023 - 5:05pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans has closed the westbound lanes of I-80 from the Nevada state line to Truckee. Vehicles are being turned around at the state line. There is no estimated time for reopening.
The interstate was closed overnight, then earlier today it reopened to vehicles only and all tractor-semitrailer combinations were not allowed.
US50 over Echo Summit was closed for over two hours due to a truck fire earlier on Friday, and it has seen heavy traffic since it opened back up.

Truck fire stalls traffic on US50 at Echo Summit, I80 remains closed to trucks
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/24/2023 - 12:33pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Dodge pickup truck with a trailer heading west on US50 caught fire at 11 a.m. Friday morning, temporarily closing the highway which was already experiencing heavy traffic with the closure of I80.
The truck had a 50-gallon tank of gas onboard and the driver was concerned it would catch fire.
As of 12:30 p.m., the scene is being cleared and the truck and trailer were moved into Gunmount. (12:44 p.m. update - road has reopened)
The resulting backup on Pioneer Trail and US50 into South Lake Tahoe was lengthy
Douglas County urges residents to be prepared for next series of storms

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno, there will be a “significant winter storm Friday into Saturday, followed by a brief break before another major winter storm midday Sunday through Tuesday night.”
Douglas County wants to urge all residents to prepare in advance for the upcoming storms. Our community should avoid unnecessary travel and have emergency plans in place in case of power outages and dangerous snow conditions.
Multiple vehicle issues along US50 between Meyers and Placerville, on I80 and other Sierra roads

As of 6:45 p.m. Thursday, traffic is behind held between Pointview in Placerville to Meyers due to multiple spinouts. There is also avalanche control at Echo Summit and drivers can expect more of the same through the night.
I80 is closed at the state line to Colfax due to whiteout conditions.
SR89 around Emerald Bay is closed and there are high avalanche warnings for that area.

Ivano Costantini ~ February 23, 1964 – December 6, 2022
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/23/2023 - 12:08amIvano Costantini, the owner of the popular Ivano’s Restaurant in Stateline, Nevada, passed away unexpectedly on December 6, 2022. He was born in Milano, Italy, and grew up in Napoli, Italy. Ivano graduated from the Institute of Agrario in Ponticelli before moving to the United States in 1989.
Ivano worked in the restaurant business in California and then opened his first restaurant in Lake Tahoe in 1994. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed boating, fishing, skiing, and running – everything Lake Tahoe had to offer.
Cannabis tax revenues of $221.6 million reported for Q4 in California

As of February 16, 2023, total cannabis tax revenue from fourth-quarter returns is $221.6 million. This includes California’s cannabis excise tax, which generated $108 million; and $113.6 million in sales tax revenue from cannabis businesses. The total reported cannabis tax revenues do not include outstanding returns and they also do not include locally imposed taxes collected by cities and counties.
Planning Commission meeting first of many to look at possible changes to South Lake Tahoe area plans

Feedback is important as the City starts looking at amendments to the plans.
The meeting will be held Thursday, February 23 at 3 p.m. in the City Hall-Council Chambers, 1901 Lisa Maloff Way. Zoom will also be available.
This is the first of multiple public hearings to gain feedback from stakeholders and the general public.
Barton Health Foundation donates 32 lifesaving AEDs to be placed around Barton facilities

According to the American Heart Association, there are more than 356,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually in the U.S., and 9 out of 10 cardiac arrest victims who receive a shock from an AED within the first-minute lives.

They say to anticipate several rounds of snow at all elevations, leading to widespread travel difficulties in the Sierra. Periods of enhanced winds will make it feel that much colder. Bundle up and protect vulnerable populations and pets.
The Winter Weather Advisory is in place until 4 a.m. Friday, then a Winter Weather Watch until Saturday, February 25 at 10 a.m.
El Dorado County supervisors appoint Measure S committee, say goodbye to CAO Don Ashton

He served as chief administrative officer for the last seven years.
The supervisors presented a proclamation recognizing Ashton's dedication to public service. It stated "Your leadership, integrity, and dedication to the employees and residents of El Dorado County will be missed,"
LTCC launches cross country and long distance track programs with hiring of new coach

2023 State of Nevada Mathematics Championship for grades 1-12

This contest is being hosted by the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno’s campus, and is sponsored by Microsoft. There is an online option for eligible students who are sick or more than a 2-hour drive away.

New Keep Tahoe Blue building in South Lake Tahoe to be environment and education center

The League to Save Lake Tahoe (Keep Tahoe Blue) purchased the building to create a new environment and education center designed around opportunities for the public to learn, appreciate and take part in protecting Lake Tahoe.
Forest treatment completed to better protect Truckee from wildfire

The project is a collaboration of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), the National Forest Foundation (NFF), and the Truckee Fire Protection District (TFPD).
The area is full of dense forest stands across both public and private lands. Crews thinned brush and small trees for wildfire mitigation while maintaining the more fire-resilient trees.
USFS seeking comments on proposal to complete restoration of Burke Creek near Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/21/2023 - 12:40pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) in partnership with the Nevada Tahoe Conservation District (NTCD) is seeking comments on a proposal to complete restoration efforts at Burke Creek and Rabe Meadow on Lake Tahoe’s southeast shore. The Burke Creek Rabe Meadow Riparian Restoration Project area is located near Stateline, Nevada. It includes portions of Rabe Meadow and the lower reaches of Burke Creek that run through the meadow and enter Lake Tahoe near Nevada Beach. Comments will be accepted from Feb. 21 through March 14, 2023.

New storm heading to the Sierra prompts Winter Weather Advisory

An abrupt change happens Tuesday as an active weather period returns with a two-part storm that will bring high winds, snow, and cold through late week. It is looking like there will be another cold, snowy pattern returning at the end of February.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the first part of the storm Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Gusty winds with lighter snow could cause visibility issues.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is hosting a State of the District Community Conversation on March 1, 2023, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the South Tahoe High School Student Union.
The evening will begin with LTUSD staff providing an overview of the state of LTUSD, followed by an interactive session with attendees and local agency leaders sharing their thoughts on their partnership.

Nevada DOT federal transportation funds grants available for nonprofits and agencies

Through April 14, applications will be accepted for non-traditional, community-based transportation projects that improve safety, expand travel choices, and enhance the transportation experience.
Eligible projects include planning, design, and construction of the following type of improvements:
Bicycle, pedestrian, and non-motorized transportation facilities

Megan Galloway, CNM, and Keri Storey, CNM have joined the practice, bringing diversified care experience and improved access to obstetric care and family planning resources to the Lake Tahoe community.
WNC’s third paramedic graduation class praised for dedication, career choice

The Paramedic Graduation Class of 2023 was recognized on Feb. 11 in WNC’s Carson Nugget Hall. A number of speakers took the time to honor the seven graduates, who included Ryan Baker, Tyler Elam, Garet Giovacchini, Sarah Harter, Rick Lopez, Adrian Lopez-Meraz and Jorge Negrete-Chavez.
