Rick Roy Boeser ~ September 22, 1961 - June 6, 2023

We are sad to announce the sudden and unexpected death of Rick Boeser on the afternoon of June 6, 2023. Born and raised in Minnesota, Rick moved to Lake Tahoe in the late 80s after graduating high school in Prior Lake, Minn., and attending the Art Academy in St. Paul, Minn.

Landing at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, Rick spent 38 years working mostly in the table games department where he was a much-loved coworker and friend to so many.

New parking lot, trails planned for old Elk's Club Lodge area near South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The property that once housed the Elk's Club in Meyers and was home to years of flea markets is on the next agenda for the California Tahoe Conservancy. On Thursday, June 15, the Board will consider spending up to $1,200,000 on water quality improvements and creating better access to trails and the Upper Truckee River by reconstructing the parking lot and trail connections.

Conservancy to vote on $1M grant to City of South Lake Tahoe for Tahoe Valley Stormwater and Greenbelt project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At its next meeting, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board will consider awarding a $1,000,000 grant to the City of South Lake Tahoe to continue constructing the Tahoe Valley Greenbelt and Stormwater Improvement Project.

Former snowboard and soccer coach pleads guilty to distribution of child pornography

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Timothy Mackey, 42, of South Lake Tahoe, pleaded guilty today to distribution of child pornography, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

According to court documents, Mackey was a member of chat groups that shared child pornography on the social media platform LiveMe, including a group named “No Limit!!!” On Feb. 6, 2020, and Feb. 25, 2020, Mackey, using the username “bag of rock,” posted multiple images of child pornography in the “No Limit!!!” group.

Expect delays as Caltrans starts pavement repair on a stretch of US50

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Repair work on a 2.5-mile stretch of US50 between Pioneer Trail and Jewell Road gets started on Tuesday, June 13. Caltrans is alerting motorists that the work will be traffic-interfering as Granite Construction will be grinding down and repaving rough sections of pavement on US 50 in both directions.

This work is part of the $17.1 million Caldor Fire Restoration Project.

South Lake Tahoe City Council approves solutions to parking problem around Heavenly

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - While there have been parking challenges in the Heavenly neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe for several seasons, the past winter exposed the lack of adequate parking for those using Heavenly Mountain Resort. It was a chaotic scene on several weekends and holidays with cars stuck on the roads surrounding the resort, vehicles sliding and colliding on most streets, and residents in the area unable to get in and out of their driveways.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District has implemented Fire Aside’s Defensible Space Evaluation (DSI) software as part of an expanded commitment to improving residents’ wildfire resilience, funded by Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation.

Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation is a nonprofit public charity that is dedicated to supporting the Tahoe region, and its Tahoe Fire Safe Initiative was created to fund fire prevention strategies in the Tahoe Basin, focusing on people and property.

Diamond Valley takes flight

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Inspired by the Hot Air for Hope Balloon Festival, Diamond Valley Elementary School’s 5th and 6th-grade students sought to learn just how balloons fly. Investigation of convection currents proved to be an interesting diversion that led to a challenge to create their own hot air balloons out of tissue paper.

Students spent a few weeks researching and crafting their balloons and then invited their friends and families to the launch day, where balloons and motivation for learning were both lifted high.

59th annual Lake Tahoe Relay on Saturday starts and ends in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be runners racing around Lake Tahoe on Saturday, all of who are taking part in the 59th Lake Tahoe Relay, the longest-running relay in the country. It starts at 5 a.m. at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe. This serves as the finish line as well.

The Lake Tahoe Relay teams consist of seven people, each running approximately 8 to 12 miles. All runners will have the same team number pinned on the front of their shirts.

There is also a two-person relay team with two members, each running 36 miles on alternating legs.

Ebbetts, Sonora, and Monitor passes in the Sierra all now reopened

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has been able to open several mountain highways that had still been closed due to heavy snow received this winter at upper elevations.

Crews typically begin removing snow from the roadway on the first Monday of April each year and work seven days per week until each pass is free of snow and all roadway hazards before declaring them officially open for the spring and summer months.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The pattern of thunderstorms and the chance of rain and hail continue throughout the region this weekend. Even though Friday only has a 15 percent chance of rain, there is a daily risk of thunderstorms, including hail up to nickel size, gusty winds up to 50 mph, and lightning. There is an increased risk of locally heavy rains and flash flooding, especially from Saturday through Monday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Saturday is $5 Community Cleanup Day, seniors can get help with disposal

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's here! On Saturday, June 10, Clean Tahoe is holding its annual $5 Community Cleanup Day, fondly known as Dump Day. Get rid of the items you've had in the grade or house, waiting to be taken to the dump. It is held at the South Tahoe Refuse Transfer Station.

New this year is a service for senior citizens only. Help is available for seniors that have a hard time transporting and disposing of furniture or other bulk items. Seniors need to call 530-544-4210 to make an appointment to get items picked up.

Work begins on STPUD Black Bart waterline replacement project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first sign that a new water project was coming to South Lake Tahoe was the old post office at the corner of Pioneer Trail and Black Bart Avenue being fenced in and filling up with blue pipes and other supplies.

The corner is the staging area for the new South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Black Bart Waterline Replacement Project being done by Vinciguerre Construction.

Crews started this week prepping the work area by cutting into the pavement on streets within the boundary area.

The contractor will be working on the project until October.

Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe opening thrift store, seeking donations

The Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe (HSTT) is opening the Thrifty Tails Boutique in Truckee in early August and they are now accepting donations.

Donations to HSTT's thrift boutique will help them provide vital resources to pets in need and improve the overall well-being of Truckee, North Lake Tahoe, and South Lake Tahoe communities. By donating, you're making a difference in the lives of pets and people alike.

To gather inventory they are accepting donations by appointment at the Truckee shelter at 10961 Steven Lane.

Unlicensed contractors cited in Tahoe sting operation

The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) collaborated with the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office in a recent undercover operation targeting unlicensed contractors. The operation, conducted in late May in the Lake Tahoe area, resulted in seven unlicensed persons receiving a Notice to Appear in criminal court for allegedly acting in the capacity of a contractor without the required license. These suspects now face legal consequences, including fines and potential imprisonment.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A job working with race cars and trucks on the track is not a traditional career path for a woman, but Elizabeth "Liz" Prestella has been making a name for herself in racing.

The 2007 South Tahoe High School (STHS) graduate currently lives in Mooresville, NC, and has the job title of "Part assistant/ tear down mechanic/ at track tire specialist." Liz says she is like "a utility knife for my team they can put me wherever is needed."

Rowena graduated from South Tahoe High in 2014 and Truckee Meadows Community College in 2022 from their design program, and has been working as a full-time designer with Design on Edge in Reno since graduation.

Restoration Alpine County to hold public meeting on current efforts

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The Alpine County public health director is urging caution to those who are attending Kids Fishing Day on Saturday, June 10.

Dr. Richard Johnson recommends the following:

South Lake Tahoe gardening: Growing your own food and this week's festival

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As anyone who has gardened at high elevation knows there are challenges that lower elevation residents don't experience. No matter the hard work and time spent tending to flowers, shrubs, and trees, the rewards are great (even if it is a one-inch potato!

I haven't grown vegetables for too long, and it was the UC Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe and Slow Grow Tahoe people that got me hooked about five years ago. My annual "crops" have been potatoes, beans, and peas. This year I'm adding sunchokes, leafy greens, onions, and leeks.

Free microchip and vaccination clinic for dogs and cats from Glenbrook to Meyers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Tahoe Truckee is holding a free vaccine and microchip clinic in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, June 13 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

This free clinic is for pets from Glenbrook to Meyers and is not limited to South Lake Tahoe residents. Bring your dog on a leash and cat in a carrier.
