New water year underway, California prepares for a possible wet El Niño year

The start of a new water year in California has the state's reservoirs above average after they were able to capture a total of 3.5 million acre-feet of water in reservoirs since December 1, 2022.
On Tuesday, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) highlighted how the State and its federal and local partners are preparing for the new water year that started on October 1. DWR said they are also preparing for the possibility of another wet season under strong El Niño conditions.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Six people were recognized as the community's unsung heroes during a recognition ceremony sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe and the South Tahoe Chamber.
The award is named the Bob Baunhauser Excellence in Service Award in recognition of the longtime local man who exemplified service. He selflessly gave his time and resources to others, especially the children of the community, without any expectation of publicity or recognition.
Nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System and the Wireless Emergency Alerts Wednesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. Both tests are scheduled to begin at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET (11:20 a.m. at Lake Tahoe).

Douglas County Community Health and Quad County Public Health are both holding flu vaccination clinics at Kahle Community Center on Wednesday, October 4.
Even though they are Nevada agencies, they will be accepting South Lake Tahoe residents as well as Nevada residents.
High-dose vaccines are available for those 65 and older in limited quantities at both events. If you do not have insurance, you will not be turned away.

If conditions and weather are favorable, California State Parks may continue understory burning over the next two weeks in Burton Creek and Sugar Pine Point state parks, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit may continue burning piles on Angora Ridge near Fallen Leaf Lake. Smoke will be present.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was a dusting of snow on the mountaintops around the Lake Tahoe Basin this weekend, but there is no more precipitation (rain or snow) in the 7-day forecast. Much of the week will be rather dry along with a general warming trend as the low progresses eastward. Temperatures will see a steady climb through the week after Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. The only wrinkle in the week will be a reinforcing shot of cold air late Monday into Tuesday morning across eastern NV. This will slow the warming trend by a day or so.

South Tahoe High earns WASC accreditation through 2029

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accrediting commission has completed its evaluation of South Tahoe High School (STHS) and has granted it a six-year accreditation status through June 30, 2029.
"I'm proud of the school," said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler. "I'm really excited about the accreditation and pleased with their designation of six years with a three-year revisit. It shows the hard work that our school put into it."

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A cold storm arriving in the Sierra Nevada Friday, bringing with it gusty winds and a quick (and, this time, shortlived) transition to chilly and showery conditions this weekend into early next week.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued south of Lake Tahoe, in Mono County.
The best potential for showers, even some high-elevation snow, will be from Saturday into Sunday.
Friday afternoon at Lake Tahoe will see mostly sunny skies with a high near 66. Southwest wind will be around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Far-right extremists and hate groups have taken over the public comment periods at meetings across the state. It wasn't just El Dorado County's Board of Supervisors meeting this week, but it was also the government meetings of Sonoma County, Saratoga, South San Francisco, El Cerrito, Walnut Creek, Sacramento, Monterey, and the list is growing. The comments have harassed officials and disrupted meetings with hate-filled messages targeting racial and ethnic minorities, the LBGTQ+ community, and the Jewish community.

Suicide is a major public health concern. Suicide was responsible for over 48,000 deaths in 2021, which equates to one death every 11 minutes. The suicide rate among people aged 10–24 increased 62 percent from 2007 through 2021. This has deeply impacted individuals, families, and communities.

It was a busy week for Tahoe Forests Matter, attending several local agency meetings via Zoom or in person. The following statement was issued through public comment at the El Dorado County Supervisors and South Lake Tahoe City Council Meetings on 9/26 and at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Board Meeting on 9/27. A similar statement was made on 9/21 at the Skyland neighborhood meeting regarding the upcoming “fuel break” project in that area.

Around her, a team of five is busy lopping pine boughs and carefully placing timber across a narrow stretch of Saxon Creek in the community of Meyers, mimicking the work of beavers who once lived there. El Dorado County, CALIF. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors' meeting on Tuesday turned into a blitz of antisemitic hate speech during the meeting's second public comment period of the day.
Caller after caller spoke during each of their three-minute time allotments via Zoom, each of them filling the 180 seconds with derogatory comments about those of Jewish faith, as well as profanity.
DCSO asking for public assistance after man speaks to children inappropriately at Target

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Calif. – The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) responded to the Target store on September 26 on the report of a male adult who had reportedly been making conversations with children and allegedly speaking to them in an inappropriate fashion while inside the store.
These incidents were reported to have occurred on September 20 around 7:15 p.m., and on September 25 at an unknown time.
Sculpture made entirely of trash from Lake Tahoe unveiled at Tahoe Blue Event Center

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - “Surfaced,” a new art installation created with more than 450 pounds of items recovered from last year’s 72-mile scuba cleanup of Lake Tahoe, was unveiled Wednesday at the new Tahoe Blue Event Center.
The art was created by Oregon-based and internationally recognized artists Joel Dean Stockdill and Yustina Salnikova of Building 180.
Prescribed fire operation near Tahoe City brings large plume of smoke

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a large prescribed fire operation at Burton Creek State Park with a large plume of smoke, causing concern from people around Lake Tahoe. As announced, California State Parks is working on a large hazardous fire fuels project requiring the implementation of prescribed fire within the wildland-urban interface of their park regions.
On Wednesday, 20 acres were ignited and another 20 acres is expected to be ignited on Thursday, and 21 on Friday.

STATELINE, Nev. – Tahoe Beach Club successfully raised over $52,000 through its "Right Footprint" summer 2023 campaign. A significant portion, $25,772, was donated to Clean Up The Lake for the launch of their innovative Environmental Dive Center (EDC) in Incline Village, Nev.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After decades of anti-tobacco campaigns, American youth are now facing the possibility of more addiction to nicotine than when cigarettes were a popular choice, thanks to vaping and e-cigarettes. The American Lung Association says youth vaping is a significant health issue, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says 99 percent of the e-cigarettes sold in assessed venues in the country contain nicotine.
Expect early morning traffic delays as NDOT installs traffic signal at US50/Warrior Way

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) says drivers should expect early morning travel delays as they install the traffic signal at US50 and Warrior Way in Zephyr Cove.
The early-morning travel delays will take place on Sept. 28.
The new light is being installed to enhance traffic flow and improve safety. Since July, drivers have seen daytime lane and shoulder closures as the base of the signals have been installed and other roadside improvements made.
Fundraiser for South Lake Tahoe woman facing Stage IV cancer battle

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local resident Nicole Marsel is going through some tough times again. In May of this year, the breast cancer that Nicole beat three years ago returned and metastasized to her entire liver, clavicular lymph node, and bones, she is now in Stage IV. Because of her recent diagnosis, Nicole took a medical leave from the Boys and Clubs of Western Nevada.
One more day to participate in TRPA housing survey; Meeting Wednesday

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has launched a FlashVote survey to gain further community input on code amendments needed to reduce the cost of building deed-restricted affordable and workforce housing in the region.
The FlashVote survey will be open until 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, September 27.

South of North Brewing Co teams with with Bread & Broth 4 Kids for Oktoberfest

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Looking for a fun way to celebrate Oktoberfest and support Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) at the same time? Join them at South of North Brewing Company on October 1 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. for lots of fun while supporting the community. There will be many different Oktoberfest 'beuirs" (beers), lots of "das wurstchen" (hot dogs), live music, and fun times.
Quarry Fire at 1,774 acres and smoke expected to head northeast to the Carson Valley

The Quarry Fire in the Stanislaus National Forest was one of many fires in that area started by lightning on September 9. As of Tuesday, September 26, it has burned 1,774 acres of Miwok Ranger District land.
Smoke from the Quarry Fire is visible in the area around the fire and is expected to drift to the northeast to just south of Lake Tahoe and into the Carson Valley south of US50 on Tuesday afternoon. Check out the fire and smoke map at fire.airnow.gov for more information.
