Nevada population expected to grow by more than 425,000 in next 20 years

Clark and Washoe Counties are likely to see the largest population growth: Clark County could see an increase of 319,501 and Washoe County an increase of 83,926. Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey Counties could see a collective
Amgen Women's Race returns to Lake Tahoe for two stages in 2017
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/02/2016 - 5:17amAmgen Tour of California announced today that professional cycling will return to Lake Tahoe, May 11-12, 2017. The Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Women's Race will include the overall start and Stage 2 on consecutive days. The women’s competition will conclude with a third stage in Elk Grove, May 13 and the final in Sacramento, May 14.
The men's race is skipping Lake Tahoe this year and is set to begin in Sacramento on May 14.
El Dorado County BOS appoint interim head of the Community Development Agency

At the BOS meeting Tuesday, Roger Niello was appointed to fill the spot vacated when Steve Pedretti left the position for Placer County.
Niello begins his job November 2.
Before he went into public service, Niello managed the Niello Auto Group for
25 years until 1999.

As planned, the City of South Lake Tahoe is now conducting a study of the socioeconomic impacts of vacation home rentals (VHRs) on the region. Their "Vacation Home Rental Analysis" is being led by a team of consultants from the firm, Michael Baker International.
Part of their study includes both stakeholders meetings and meetings with the community, both of which begin later this month.

I support Larry Reilly because he is dedicated to education as evidenced by his thirty-nine years as an outstanding teacher. He is well-informed as to the changing laws and regulations governing education. His years as an athletic coach attest to the fact that he knows the importance of team work.
Prescribed burns resume around South Lake Tahoe

Urban lots near Heavenly Mountain Resort and off of South Upper Truckee Road near Highway 89 in Christmas Valley are on the list for fire operations.

Christmas tree permits for Lake Tahoe Basin go on sale Monday
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/01/2016 - 10:51amThe popular Lake Tahoe basin Christmas tree permits from the U.S Forest Service go on sale Monday, November 7 in South Lake Tahoe and North Lake Tahoe, then on November 9 in Incline Village.
Permits cost $10 each with a limit of two per family. They must be purchased in person, are not transferable and are sold on a first come, first serve basis. Even though the last day for tree permit sales is on December 23, they are normally sold out well before that date, sometimes as early as December 4.

Second wettest October on record in California

The Lake Tahoe Airport on the South Shore received 7.3 inches of rain in October, just over double of the monthly average of 3.54 inches. This water is helping to fill Lake Tahoe, which rose during the wet mid-October storm by over 3 inches, adding 11 billion gallons of water to the lake.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park closes to cars for season, pedestrians welcome
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/31/2016 - 5:53pmThe gates have closed to Van Sickle Bi-State Park in South Lake Tahoe, but the grounds will remain open for the public to enjoy year-round.
The California Tahoe Conservancy announced the closure today and wants to remind park users that when the gates close, services such as water, restrooms and trash collection are not available.
Fall and winter park users are reminded to park legally and not to block the gate, and to pack out your garbage so the park can remain clean for all others to follow, and to protect the wildlife.
Editorial: Use the election to create a community of collaboration and teamwork

When travelers come to Lake Tahoe they don't see a state line, or a direction on the compass, they see a beautiful recreational paradise that just a few people are able to call home, but millions can call a vacation destination.

Washoe County Sheriff's Office to grow beards for charity
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/31/2016 - 7:43amIn support of local men battling prostate cancer, staff from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office get to put away their facial razors in support of "No Shave November." Sheriff Chuck Allen said all employees can grow facial hair outside the normal standards for the whole month, all for a $20 donation to the Renown Health Foundation.
Women on staff can still participate. For a donation, they can wear adhesive mustaches.
Letter: Overlooking the Obvious - Vote Yes on T

If and when there is a Loop Road Plan, there will be components that will need the city’s approval. The two biggies will be accepting the old Hwy 50 as a city street and using eminent domain to tear down many houses. The point here is that the city will be making decisions. Measure T is about who will be making those decisions: A majority of city council, i.e. 3 people, or 9000 voters.

$415 million for environmental restoration projects at Lake Tahoe in jeopardy

Youth invited to enter California State Park art contest

Since the parks offer endless opportunities for inspiration, the Youth Art Contest is a way for young people to draw on those experiences to create art featuring their encounters with wildlife and nature, learning about history and culture or enjoying recreation.
Teen runaway back with family in Carson Valley

An unidentified family friend told South Tahoe Now that they were able to contact the teen, Kyle Bidgood, and take him home.
Sgt. Bernadette Smith of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Kyle is no longer in the National Crime Information Center system (NCIC).
Storm bringing up to 18" of snow at upper elevations of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/29/2016 - 8:06amThe next storm heading to South Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada is bringing with it much cooler temperatures and snow. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the region from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sunday for areas above 6,500 feet.
Snow accumulations should be 6" to 18" above 7,000 feet with up to 6" down to 6,500 feet. Up to 2" at lake level are possible.
The snow levels wills tart around the 7,000 ft level, lowersing to 6,000 feet by late Sunday morning.

In addition to hosting a Boys and Girls Club golf tournament, the Edgewood Ladies Golf Club also sponsored a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment. It is definitely a credit to the members of the ladies golf group that they are so involved with helping the community.

Power restored to Spring Creek area after Emerald Fire - expect more outages

The utility company had originally thought they wouldn't be able to get the power back on until November 4.

Minden resident wins iconic Nevada welcome sign

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) held a contest to find new owners, and nearly 14,500 residents entered the free raffle via phone, web site and social media, with winners selected randomly.
The four winners are from each region of the state: Northwest: Jennifer Bills (Reno), Southwest: Anna Thomas (from Minden), Northeast: Kaitlyn Tueller, Southeast: Breanna Kirkham.

In 2015, Martin created the guitar that is on display outside of the Hard Rock Lake Tahoe. Thursday night, his latest creation was unveiled at the new Golden 1 Center, the new home of the Sacramento Kings.

US Coast Guard has record year in drug seizures - $5.6 billion worth
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/27/2016 - 6:21pmWith a growing cocaine problem, not only in South Lake Tahoe but in the whole country, the U.S Coastguard and their interagency partners are being kept busy seizing the drug from ships in the Pacific Ocean headed to the United States.
The Coast Guard broke records over the last 12 months by removing more than 416,000 pounds of cocaine worth over $5.6 billion from boats and ships. Their previous record was 367,700 pounds seized in 2008.
Public's help sought in locating Carson Valley teen runaway

Kyle Bidgood, age 15, left home on October 25 with skateboard in hand and hasn't been seen by his family since.
Bidgood is described as a Caucasian male, with dark hair, 5’7” and around 110 lbs. He was last seen wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt with black sleeves, black jeans and a baseball cap.

I first met Nick Exline at an event where we had the opportunity to meet Democratic congressional candidate Dr. Bob Derlet. Nick asked about carbon markets and the related benefits to our Sierra Nevada economy. As a watershed scientist, I was impressed by Nick’s informed and thoughtful question. I enjoyed meeting a South Lake Tahoe resident who possessed a strong background in environmental science, as well as a thoughtful man who had ideas about how we could turn our largest obstacles in this region into economic successes for our residents.

South Shore casinos continue fiscal year trend: Income on the rise
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/27/2016 - 5:46amFor the first three months of the fiscal year, income for casinos on the South Shore is on the rise, with a gain of 2.27 percent in September, 2016. After business expenses and taxes, the gaming establishments took in $21,730,716, up $482,998 from the same month in 2015 according to a monthly report released by the Nevada Gaming Commission today.
The state of Nevada as a whole is up 3.55 percent with a "win" figure of $948,961,678.
North Shore casinos posted a 6.37 percent gain, Carson Valley up 1.54 percent.

Friends of the Library members are allowed to come in at 9 AM. If you're not a member already, you may join the morning of. Support the Friends and expand your winter library.

A Gathering of Friends at the SLT Library

November 15, 2016 - 6:00pm Please join us for "A Friends of the Library Gathering" at the Libray on November 15, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. Your "FOL" runs on volunteer power. Come elect those willing to serve as officers for the 2016-17 year. Help is always needed on committees, too and there will be a sign-up sheet with descriptions to encourage those who want to be part of our Volunteer Corps.

Two storms headed to Lake Tahoe bringing rain, wind and snow
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/26/2016 - 10:24pmTwo storms are headed to Lake Tahoe and each will bring rain, wind and a chance of snow.
The first storm will hit Thursday into Friday, with the other one right on its tail Saturday night into Sunday.
Storm one:
Hurricane Seymour off the coast of Mexico will bring heavy rainfall that will likely cause travel delays, especially for those driving across the Sierra. The peak period for heavy rain looks like it will be early Friday morning. Rain will spillover into Western Nevada as well, so be prepared with ponding water on the roadway.
Prescribed burn blamed for Little Valley Fire
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/26/2016 - 9:58pmFire investigators say the Oct. 14 Little Valley Fire, which destroyed 23 homes, 17 outbuildings and chewed more than 2,200 acres was caused by a prescribed fire conducted earlier in the month by the Nevada Division of Forestry.
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources made the report available shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday, and was unavailable for comment.
