Widespread prescribed burns to continue around Lake Tahoe

Weather permitting, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S Forest Service are planning on continuing their prescribed fire operations next week beginning Monday, February 29, 2016.

On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Logan Shoals Vista Point, Camp Galilee, Spooner Summit and Sand Harbor.

On the South Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Spring Creek, Panther Road, and Lake Tahoe Boulevard near Sawmill Road.

Missing Donner Lake boaters: One man’s body found; search for second resumes Sunday

The body of one of two men whose canoe capsized Friday in choppy water on Donner Lake was found Saturday morning. The search for the second man continued but was suspended Saturday evening, Truckee police said.

Dive teams are scheduled to return Sunday morning to continue the search, Truckee police said.

Its that time of year again, when uniform clad girls and their tables full of cookies line up outside local grocery stores to sell their famous cookies. South Lake Tahoe Girl Scouts join over two million others around the country for their seasonal sales of Thin Mints, Samoas, Trefoils and other popular cookies.

There is a feature on the scouting website that alerts people to where their local cookies sales are taking place.

New master plan being created for Tahoe Paradise Park

As the Tahoe Paradise Park Improvement District celebrates their 50th anniversary, the district's board of directors, along with community volunteers, determined that it is time to create a master plan for the park which is located in the town of Meyers.

The draft master plan will be the subject of a community meeting on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at the California Conservation Corps meeting room from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Bartenders arrested on drug charges in Incline Village

Two Incline Village bartenders are facing narcotics charges after being arrested by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office All Threats All Crimes (ATAC) Unit.

A series of undercover operations took place between January 28 and February 4, 2016 and were directed towards bartenders at local bars and grills who were suspected of selling drugs to patrons.

Douglas County deputies seek two for alleged shoplifting at Ulta

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying two persons of interest in a theft at Ulta Beauty, located at 911 Topsy Lane in Carson City.

On February 03, 2016 at approximately 4:35 pm, a female entered the store and began shopping and asking questions about products. At approximately 4:59 pm, a male entered the store and walked directly to the female and began talking to her.

Caltrans looking at roundabout or traffic signal in Meyers

Due to the unsafe intersection of Highway 50 and State Route 89, Caltrans is looking at safety improvements in the area to reduce collisions, and their severity. At this time, the preferred option for Caltrans is adding a roundabout at the intersection to improve conditions after a reported seven accidents at the intersection.

The estimated $3.1 million project is scheduled for construction in 2018-19. It is currently in the environmental phase, with the environmental document scheduled to be finalized in November 2016.

South Lake Tahoe gas station loses liquor license for 20 days

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department and Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) posted a 20 day liquor license suspension notice at American Gas on Thursday, February 25. The suspension comes after an undercover operation began on November 12, 2015 after the owner of the station allegedly sold a glass pipe used for smoke methamphetamine.

The owner, Stefka Dimitrova, said she wasn't arrested for selling the pipe as the ABC report claims and didn't understand the suspension.

American Gas is located at 2762 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

South Tahoe and Whittell High basketball teams play in state tournament Friday

The basketball teams from both South Shore high schools are playing in the first round of the NIAA State Basketball Championship, with their first round games Friday.

Whittell Warriors are taking on the Adelson Lions in their Division IV game at 3:00 p.m. at Reed High School in Reno with the South Tahoe Vikings playing the Desert Pines Jaguars at 4:40 p.m. at Reno High. The Vikings play in NIAA Division I-A.

South Lake Tahoe police investigate threat made by STHS student

On Friday, February 26, 2016, administrators at South Tahoe High School received a tip that there was a potential threat to the students at the school during their lunch break.

South Lake Tahoe Police Officers responded to the school and conducted an investigation. Many parents were concerned after receiving messages from their children and seeing the extra law enforcement on campus.

"We have interviewed students and spoken with the one behind the situation," said SLTPD Lt. Brian Williams.

South Shore casinos keep "win" figures on the positive side in January

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their monthly figures for January, and those for casinos on the South Shore show a gain of 9.22 percent.

In January of 2016, casinos had a report gaming win of $15,434,635. A gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

North Lake Tahoe casinos had the biggest percentage of "win" with a gain of $445,683, up 22.35 percent over January of 2015. The biggest loss was seen on the Las Vegas Strip, where casinos took in a win of $532,275,993, down 7.72 percent.

Gregory “Scott” Baker named Tahoe Douglas Fire's new Assistant Fire Chief

Gregory "Scott" Baker has joined the Tahoe Douglas Fire District as their new Assistant Fire Chief, replacing Mark A. Novak who left the department a year ago to become the new Fire Chief in Vail, Colorado.

Baker, who brings with him over 20-years of service, comes to the fire district from the Reno Fire Department where his most recent position was that of Division Chief of Fleet and Facilities.

Young entrepreneurs win $6,000 in prize money

On Tuesday night at the annual Jalé and Warren Trepp Business Plan Competition, three teams of young entrepreneurs studying at Sierra Nevada College competed for $6,000 in cash prizes.

This event is one of the most exciting celebrations of the academic year at SNC Tahoe. After each team presented twenty-minute oral presentations to a panel of live, external judges and a public audience of more than 100 people, the room waited in anticipation for the announcement of the winners.

Two more suspects identified in South Lake Tahoe homicide

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has identified two more suspects in the January 30, 2016 murder of Dennis Wright, Jr. at the Beverly Lodge.

DCSO Explorer Scouts volunteer at Pebble Beach golf tournament

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Explorers just finished a week-long detail in Pebble Beach, California working the AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Golf Tournament to earn money for their POST.

Thirteen DCSO Explorers handled pedestrian control, traffic control and security details in and around the famous 17 mile drive in Pebble Beach. They saw golf professionals like Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh as well as amateurs like Justin Timberlake, Mark Wahlberg, Carson Daly and Larry The Cable Guy.

Community bone marrow drive in South Lake Tahoe for CHP officer Keith Meter

South Lake Tahoe group wants local voters to determine Loop Road future

Three former South Lake Tahoe City council members and a local environmental activist have formed "Let Tahoe Decide," a committee to force the Loop Road/Hwy 50 Revitalization Project to go to the voters.

A "notice of intent to circulate petition" was submitted to the SLT City Clerk Susan Alessi on February 23, 2016.

Ex-firefighter from Placerville sent to jail for five years for arson

Benjamin Cunha, 33, of Placerville, was sentenced Tuesday, February 23, 2016 to five years in prison for arson after being found guilty of setting at least 30 wildland fires during the summers of 2006 and 2007.

Two of these fires burned onto federal land. Cunha indicated that his motivation for setting the fires was to overcome boredom, to earn overtime pay for fighting the fires, and to impress his peers.

United States District Judge John A. Mendez also ordered Cunha to pay $246,862 in restitution to Cal Fire, his former employer.

NDOT dismantles boulder that fell on Highway 50 between Glenbrook and Cave Rock

On Tuesday, February 23, 2016, Nevada Department of Transportation crews started the dismantling process of the large boulder that fell onto Highway 50 northeast of the Cave Rock tunnel Saturday night.

The large boulder rolled onto the roadway, causing damage to the road and guardrail, but no injuries or vehicle damage, at approximately 6:30 p.m. February 20. The size of the boulder is estimated at nine feet wide by six feet high.

Truckee pilots seek record for "Plane Water Skiing" on Lake Tahoe

While most people are aware of traditional water skiing, where a person with a ski (or skis) glides over the surface of water as they are pulled by a boat, how many are aware of "Plane Water Skiing"?

Not many, but that may change after efforts made by three pilots out of Truckee set out to create a record for Guinness World Records on February 11, 2016.

Vehicle pursuit reaches 100 mph after suspects steal expensive liquor in Carson City

4:30 p.m. update: The name of the male taken into custody is 23-year-old Dominic Gonzalez from Newark, Calif. Gonzalez is currently being held at the Washoe County Jail on a felony charge for possession of stolen property as well as reckless driving, driving without a driver’s license, fail to stop at the scene of an accident, fail to give information to party at accident and failure to obey a peace officer.

Tahoe man busted for pounds of pot after pepper spraying homeless man

A 20-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested Monday on felony drug charges after he allegedly used pepper spray on a homeless man and then called 911 dispatch to report what he had done, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Fire operations to continue at Lake Tahoe

California State Parks, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations started back up today, February 22, 2016.

On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Logan Shoals Vista Point, Spooner Summit and Sand Harbor. Ten acres on Spooner, 15 acres at Logan Shoals, 150 acres at Camp Galilee and 30 acres at Sand Harbor.

On the South Shore, operations are scheduled near Eagle Point Campground, Spring Creek and Panther Road. Five acres in Angora Creek area, 10 acres on Panther, 30 acres at Emerald Bay.

Owner of Lake Tahoe Brewing Company jailed on felony theft charge

The owner of Lake Tahoe Brewing Company was arrested Monday on a felony theft warrant involving brewing equipment sold to a man in British Columbia in which he paid the suspect $45,000 for equipment he never received, a Carson City sheriff’s detective said.

Michael Candelario was taken into custody on suspicion of theft of property valued at $3,500 or more. The dollar amount of the alleged theft related to equipment is $45,000, said Detective Sam Hatley. He was arrested at the Carson City brewery and booked into Carson City jail. He is being held on $25,000 bail.
