Each month, local entrepreneurs and small business owners will have the opportunity to gather and connect in a peer-to-peer mentoring series held in partnership with local coworking spaces Untethered and Cowork Tahoe.

Invasive species watercraft inspection stations to change operations starting Oct. 1

• AIS inspections and decontaminations will continue to be available at the Meyers, Calif. station Thursday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
• Inspections will also be available 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the Lake Forest boat ramp in Tahoe City, CA, and at the Cave Rock-Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park boat ramp in Glenbrook, NV from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily during daylight hours.

Barton Health is offering a new Wellness Program designed to help reduce the risk of major illness through diet. The Mind Diet, or "Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay" Diet, focuses on preventing and managing Alzheimer's dementia and other chronic diseases. Guided by two Registered Dietitian Nutritionists, Becky Espinel, RDN, and Kristen Travis, RDN, the course will take place on Monday, October 17, from 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at the Barton Center for Orthopedics & Wellness.

She was recognized for her exceptional work with the Phoenix Food Pantry and much more.
During a ceremony, other volunteers were highlighted: Sherri Acri, Bob Harms, and Ted Turner.

Green sentenced 15 years to life in 37 year old murder case
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/27/2022 - 9:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - Judge Suzanne Kingsbury has presided over many murder trials during her career, but she said the murder of Jane Hylton stands out as the single most brutal murder she's ever come across.
Hylton was murdered on July 7, 1985, in El Dorado Hills. Hylton's body was found by her 13-year-old daughter Autumn, their roommate Ricky Davis and his girlfriend Connie Dahle. She had multiple wounds including 29 piercing wounds on her body and neck, including pierced lungs. Hylton was beaten on the face, was bit on the shoulder, and still had the tip of a knife in her head.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Blue Angels return to the sky over Northern Nevada once again during the Minden-Tahoe Airport’s Aviation Roundup taking place on Oct. 1 and 2.
Six of the US Navy F-18 Super Blue Hornets who make up the Blue Angels have been seen practicing in the area.
The aviation roundup is a premier airshow produced by Douglas County and hosted at the Minden-Tahoe Airport in Minden, Nevada. The airshow is a bi-annual event and features excellent airshow performers and military jet demonstration teams.
South Lake Tahoe man dies from "negligent discharge of a 9mm handgun," roommate arrested on gun charges

On September 23 at approximately 6:06 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Dispatch received a 911 call about a single gunshot inside a residence and a possible victim of a gunshot wound. SLTPD patrol officers responded and found a 37-year-old man inside the home with a single gunshot wound to the head.

This is a powerful new software tool developed by Vibrant Planet, that will allow land managers to collaboratively address wildfire threats and plan forest health and restoration treatments. Land Tender will be used in the Tahoe Basin and surrounding critical watersheds covering 1.5 million acres, making this the largest deployment to date of this new system.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/25/2022 - 8:29pmThrough October 1, all adoption fees at the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) are waived for pets over four months old! Normally, the fee for dogs 5 months and older is $110, and for under four months is $160. Save a life, save a lot!
All pets adopted at HSTT are already spayed or neutered which normally runs $700 for the surgery, more for larger dogs. Also, every pet adopted from them includes an initial medical check, current vaccinations, and a microchip, a savings of $300-$400.

Since the Epic Promise Grant funds cover the cost of 12 Adopt A Days yearly, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort crew members alternate monthly meal sponsorships. Starting with their initial participation, all of the AAD crews from the two Vail Resorts have been a delight to have helping with the weekly Monday Meals served at St. Theresa Church’s Grace Hall.
Mosquito Fire now 85% contained, 76,781 acres in size

In the late afternoon, as some of the large-diameter trees began to smoke again after last week’s rain event, aircraft were deployed, providing support ahead of ground crews.

Temperatures will top out at 5 to 10 degrees above average, with continued light winds and mostly dry conditions. Breezy afternoon winds are likely Tuesday and Wednesday. A ridge will then build in and stay overhead through next weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Gardnerville man found guilty of felony child molestation and other charges
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/24/2022 - 9:31pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 53-year-old Gardnerville resident was found guilty on September 22 of three counts of felony child molestation and one additional felony count of meeting with a minor for lewd purposes.
Robert Allen Oakes is scheduled to be sentenced on October 17, 2022, and is facing the possibility of 26 years to life in prison for his crimes. Judge Michael McLaughlin presided over the three-week trial in South Lake Tahoe.
Forest thinning work resumes near Pioneer Trail and US-50
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/24/2022 - 8:00pmThe USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit in partnership with Great Basin Institute will continue mechanical whole tree fuels reduction (thinning) operations around neighborhoods and powerline corridors off Pioneer Trail near Meyers, Calif.
Thinning is scheduled to begin this week in Montreal Unit 25 near the intersection of Pioneer Trail and US Hwy 50. Cutting in Unit 8 is complete at this time, but log hauling will continue for the next week or two.

This year, Boosters is coordinating the rejuvenation of the South Tahoe High School (STHS) QUAD - the center of campus - for the students to have a great outdoor space to hang out in!
After a general cleanup, Boosters will be adding boulders, logs, native vegetation (in planter boxes- with the help of the STHS Garden Club), and 40 different outdoor tables and benches for students and staff to congregate at. And they are looking for support!
Weekend offramp closure in Camino as Caltrans finishes up $55.4 million safety project

Since many South Lake Tahoe locals travel to Apple Hill each Fall, the changes are something to take note of.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department investigating a fatality
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/23/2022 - 9:03pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a home on James Avenue Friday night after being dispatched to a report of a man with a gunshot wound.
At 6:07 p.m., SLTPD responded and found a man with a life-threatening wound. He was transported to Barton Hospital where he later passed away.
Detectives are at the home tonight, investigating the incident. According to SLTPD Det. Scott Crivelli, there is no threat or risk to the community, but there are no other details to be released at this time.
NDOT continues paving work on SR-28 and SR-431
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/23/2022 - 7:09pmINCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Drivers can expect multiple work zones next week as paving continues on SR-431, SR-28 in the Marlette Creek area receives slurry seal, and a portion of SR-28 north of Sand Harbor gets repaved. Drivers can expect up to 30-minute delays. Traffic control supervisors will be monitoring traffic flow and delay times.
All work is weather and temperature permitting, and subject to change.

Extended closure on Central Truckee eastbound off-ramp from I-80
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/23/2022 - 3:19pmCaltrans is alerting Interstate 80 (I-80) motorists in Truckee to expect an extended closure of the Central Truckee eastbound off-ramp for continued reconstruction work.
Originally scheduled to reopen on Friday, September 23, the closure of the I-80 eastbound off-ramp at Central Truckee (Exit 186) has now been extended through 5 p.m. Monday, October 3 due to weather delays. The off-ramp is being reconstructed with paving, joint sealing and striping work still required before the ramp is reopened to motorists.
No herbicides detected in Tahoe Keys - final turbidity curtain removed
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/23/2022 - 2:01pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) project to test innovative methods to control the largest infestation of aquatic invasive weeds in the Tahoe Basin reached another milestone this week. Monitoring showed that herbicides were no longer present in the Area A test location. On Thursday, divers removed the rubber barriers, called turbidity curtains, that since May had sealed off the test area to restrict herbicide movement.
Liberty Utilities donates firewood to the Washoe Tribe

A bi-product of this work is green waste or, in other words, a lot of wood. In support of Liberty’s commitment to sustainability, when possible, Liberty delivers this green waste to facilities that can repurpose it, such as Eastern Sierra Landfill, which chips the wood and provides it to Full Circle Compost in Carson City.
Traffic through casino corridor to be impacted during Tahoe Events Center construction
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/23/2022 - 12:57pmConstruction starts on the sewer improvement project for Tahoe Events Center on Monday, Sept. 26. The project entails undergrounding overhead utility lines, constructing new sidewalks, and upgrades to existing sewer lines along Uzd-50 in the casino corridor.
Work will impact travel through the Stateline casino corridor and US-50 thru-traffic should use alternate routes during the work hours of Monday through Thursday from 5 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Highway message boards will display suggested routes.

It's time to get witchy on the water in South Lake Tahoe on October 1. Grab your board and your witch outfit, and head over to Timber Cove Marina at 2 p.m.
Organizer Kelsey Adams presented the idea of paddle boarding in costume to her friends, and 50 of them immediately wanted to join the fun, so she created a Facebook event.

Come see the program they have created themselves on Wednesday, September 28 at 4:30pm in the Board Room of Roberta Mason Library Building at Lake Tahoe Community College. Find out what they learned including all the technology necessary to share their pictures and experiences with us. We had campers, a counselor, a dorm mother coordinator and program presenter, all representing South Lake Tahoe at the UC Davis camp. It was the 21st year of AAUW Tech Trek, originated in California, and sponsored by AAUW on college campuses in many states.
Keep Tahoe Blue to host 25th annual volunteer restoration day

Healing lands impacted by wildfire is the focus of this year’s event.
Now in its 25th year, Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days (TFSD) events have empowered thousands of volunteers to restore important but fragile ecosystems across the Lake Tahoe Basin. These efforts protect Lake Tahoe’s beauty, as well as its famed water quality and clarity by restoring the environment’s natural functions.
Mosquito Fire's 125-mile perimeter is 60% contained, fire is 76,575 acres in size
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/22/2022 - 7:18pmCommand of the Mosquito Fire is changing Friday as major progress was made on the Mosquito Fire Thursday. The perimeter has a containment line around 60% of it, and 76,575 acres have burned. The total personnel still on the fire is 1,805.
Mostly sunny skies with warmer and drier weather returned today over the Mosquito Fire. Temperatures rose to the upper 60s to mid-70s with light winds from the southwest. This warming trend will continue into the weekend and next week bringing humidity levels down and the possibility of increased fire behavior.
