Keep Tahoe Maui Ikaika stickers to raise funds for fire victims

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There has always been a strong connection between South Lake Tahoe and Maui residents, and to support Hawaiian friends, a sticker has been created by Kenny Curtzwiler to raise funds for those in need after the deadly fires.

Keep Tahoe Maui Ikaika (which means Keep Tahoe Maui Strong) stickers are available for a minimum of a $10 donation. 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Maui residents.

Man arrested after armed robbery at South Lake Tahoe gas station

UPDATE: The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has updated the initial report of an armed robbery at the Chevron Gas Station on Wednesday evening. The suspect, later identified as William Ehlers, entered the gas station at approximately 3:30 p.m.and held the clerk at gunpoint.

Ehlers left with an undisclosed amount of money and an energy drink.

Recreational advisory issued at Indian Creek Reservoir due to a Harmful Algal Bloom

The Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board is urging fishermen and recreational users to stay out of the water at Indian Creek Reservoir located in Alpine County. Localized areas of the lake were tested to confirm that the lake is being impacted by Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). The lake is posted with a lakewide recreational advisory of “DANGER” to alert lake users of the elevated risk.

Recreators are encouraged to follow the below guidance until further notice.

Lil' Sharks Program returns to South Tahoe Ice Arena

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The San Jose Lil Sharks program will be returning to South Lake Tahoe for the Fall Session at the Tahoe Ice Arena. The Summer session sold out, and organizers are once again excited to introduce the great game of hockey to another group of kids.

The Fall Program begins in October and runs for six weeks. Participants are fitted with full gear, and sign-ups are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Smoke affecting areas of Northern Nevada and California

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke from the fires in Northern California and Oregon is responsible for the poor air quality in the Sacramento and San Francisco Bay Area and, on a lesser scale, the Sierra.

The wind from the north on Wednesday brought the smoke south into those regions.

There is a Red Flag Warning in Sacramento until 8 p.m. Wednesday night, and Lake Tahoe has a Lake Wind Advisory in place for Thursday.

Man arrested in school parking lot after investigation into drug sales in Incline Village

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - A Washoe County man who allegedly sold fentanyl and other drugs in the parking lot at Incline Village High School was arrested after an investigation by detectives with the Regional Narcotics Unit (RNU). They arrested 20-year-old Ramon Navarro for 22 felony counts of various narcotics offenses after they identified him as the source of drugs infiltrating the hallways of the high school on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.

Taylor Creek Stream Profile Chamber set to reopen this fall

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For over two years the glass-enclosed stream profile chamber at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center has been closed down due to acts of vandalism. Unknown person(s) had broken the glass, allowing water from Taylor Creek to get inside and rendering the popular exhibit useless.

The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has announced repairs are underway at the chamber and, if all goes as planned, they anticipate it reopening by the end of September or beginning of October 2023.

Suspicious early morning fire in South Lake Tahoe lands one in jail

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man was arrested on suspicion of arson after the home he was living in caught fire early Tuesday morning.

At 4:05 a.m., first responders were called to the Osborne Avenue home in South Lake Tahoe on the report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, they found the home fully engulfed in flames with one of the home's residents attempting to put out the fire with a garden hose.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office seek suspect who allegedly used stolen credit cards at Lake Tahoe

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s assistance to identify an individual who is suspected of committing a vehicle burglary. Credit cards stolen from the vehicle were used to purchase approximately $1,500 worth of merchandise from a number of establishments in the Stateline, Nevada, and South Lake Tahoe, California areas.

The male suspect is Caucasian, approximately 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, and has light-brown facial hair.

El Dorado County couple sentenced for tax fraud

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A couple from El Dorado Hills was sentenced on Monday for their criminal efforts to avoid paying federal income taxes, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

Brian Beland, 39, was sentenced to 21 months in prison and a $30,000 fine, and Denae Beland, 40, was sentenced to five years of supervised release and a $25,000 fine.

South Lake Tahoe students head back to the classroom on Monday

To meet state requirements, South Lake Tahoe moving to a three-cart garbage system

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new trash can system and new dump collection trucks are headed to South Lake Tahoe and the South Shore in 2024. The three carts will be colored, green for yard waste, blue for recyclables, and black animal-resistant for trash, and the trucks will be outfitted with semi-automated dumping mechanisms.

The reason for the new system is two-fold. One is to meet the requirements of Senate Bill 1383 which requires all residential and businesses to source separate organics. The other is to help reduce injuries to South Tahoe Refuse and Recycling team members.

Former South Lake Tahoe resident is first tourist identified as victim in Lahaina fire

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A former South Lake Tahoe resident has been identified as a victim of the Lahaina, Maui wildfire. Theresa "Terri" Cook, 72, hadn't been seen since the fires ravaged the historic Hawaiian town. The last time anyone saw her was the day of the fire, walking down Front Street.

Maui County officials identified Cook in a report released on August 22. She had been in Lahaina on vacation, staying at the Best Western Pioneer Inn, and had been scheduled to return to the Sacramento airport on August 9. The deadly fire broke out on August 8.

TRPA gives final approval of USFS parking lot upgrades at Chimney Beach

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - During its meeting this week, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board approved the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) Chimney Beach Trailhead parking improvement project on Lake Tahoe’s East Shore. NDOT says delays possible as they replace Mt. Rose Highway avalanche control system

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Transportation is advising Mt. Rose Highway commuters to anticipate upcoming brief traffic delays and stoppages as the avalanche control system located at the Mt. Rose Highway (State Route 431) summit is replaced.

Beginning in late August through October, drivers can anticipate intermittent weekday traffic delays and stoppages near the Mt. Rose Highway summit during installation of the new system. The periodic traffic delays are anticipated to be less than 30 minutes as a helicopter delivers components for the project.

Douglas Forte ~ December 3, 1944 to July 24, 2023

The world has lost one of the best. On July 24th, at 78 years of age, Doug Forte passed away while on vacation in Maui. Doug was a 41-year resident of South Lake Tahoe. For the last four years, he had been living in Green Valley, Arizona where he lived with his wife Mary and dog Lola.

Lack of families completing Family Income Survey could cost LTUSD up to $2M

If one only looked at the completed Family Income Surveys received by the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) each year, the answer would be "yes." Last fall, under 50 percent of the students enrolled met the income guidelines necessary for extra funding whereas that number was consistently in the 60 percent range (and higher) in the years prior to COVID.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrests suspect wanted for burglaries in Carson City and Minden

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - An off-duty deputy from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) was shopping at the Tractor Supply Store in Minden on Sunday morning. At approximately 9:25 a.m. he spotted Sean Maxwell, a man who the deputy knew was wanted as a suspect in several burglaries in Carson City.

The off-duty deputy contacted DCSO dispatch and patrol deputies responded.

Maxwell was detained as he was leaving the Tractor Supply store, and it was determined that he had allegedly stolen several items from the store.
