Snow cleared from SR-89 around Emerald Bay, Caltrans opens roadway
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/16/2022 - 10:19pmCrews from Caltrans have been able to reopen SR-89 around Emerald Bay. Snow from two series of storms led to the road shutting down. The road reopened Thursday with chain controls, and those controls have since been removed.
Before starting on any journey in the Sierra, check https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ as conditions can change.
There is little to no parking available along the highway, and parking spots are available at the Vikingsholm lot and, if snow is cleared, at the entrance to Eagle Falls.
Two Trails of Lights in South Lake Tahoe to enjoy - one by foot, one by vehicle
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/16/2022 - 7:33pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Take a journey on the Trail of Lights in South Lake Tahoe through the holiday season. From 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., wander along the trail starting at the recreation center.
The decorations are from last week's Festival of Lights and they will remain throughout the month for all to enjoy.
It is an easy walk, about 100 yards, and parking is at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center, 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd. Stop by your favorite spot for hot cocoa on the way to bring it along as you enjoy the holiday spirit.
But save some as you follow the other Trail of Lights.
Column: Snow removal safety
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/16/2022 - 2:21pmLake Tahoe is known for its snowfall with multi-day storms dropping deep, often heavy, snow. And while our region embraces these storms, removing snow is a necessary and strenuous task.
Shoveling
Shoveling snow requires significant exertion and should be approached like an exercise. Don't eat a big meal or drink alcohol before or soon after shoveling. Dress in layers and cover your mouth and nose to limit the cold air you inhale. Warm up and stretch out the muscles of the back, arms, shoulders, and legs before heading outside.
Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe presents check to Live Violence Free
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/16/2022 - 2:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe presented a check for $1500.45 to Live Violence Free (LVF). During its monthly board meeting, they voted to give LVF %500 to help buy Christmas presents for the families they serve.
Then they found out it was the nonprofit's 45th anniversary and wanted to help them celebrate.
A member challenged the membership to match the $500, and that request was met and doubled.

Motel 6 and surrounding property still in sights of California Tahoe Conservancy

At the time they had approved $10,000,000 to purchase the environmentally sensitive parcels, demolish existing structures, and stabilize the related sites which are along the Upper Truckee River.
Cold weekend ahead for South Lake Tahoe, temps warming up before the holiday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/15/2022 - 7:00pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - High pressure will continue to block storms from reaching the Sierra and western Nevada through the weekend. Due to the snow cover and light winds, we will continue to see below-normal temperatures.
Lake Tahoe will see slowly warming temperatures throughout the upcoming week. For Monday to Wednesday, models hint at a subtle, quick-moving trough to the north. There is a low possibility of snow showers during this time though there will be some gusty winds.
Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe on suspicion of a 2013 murder

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 38-year-old man who has called the South Lake Tahoe area home for the last several years was arrested on December 13, 2022, after a warrant was issued for his arrest on suspicion of murder.

Katz Amsterdam awards almost $2.5M to support communities where Vail has resorts
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/15/2022 - 10:41amLAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Katz Amsterdam Charitable Trust and Foundation has awarded $2.46 million in mental and behavioral health grants to community-based organizations in nine mountain communities across North America, including Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe, and Truckee. This is the fifth year grants were awarded, with aggregate funding of over $13.5M, to help increase overall access to mental health care, reduce behavioral health stigma and improve community-developed services for communities of color and indigenous populations. This year’s grants will benefit over 40 organizations.
Conservancy approves easements to Caltrans for US50 safety project in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/15/2022 - 10:08amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) project to improve safety for walkers and cyclists along US50 needed an agreement from the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) to allow access and easements to move forward. During its board meeting Thursday, the CTC board unanimously approved the items needed to support the safety project that will add street lighting, painted bike lanes, improved bicycle signage, and enhanced crosswalk visibility along the highway. The project extends from the South Lake Tahoe “Y” east to the intersection with Pioneer Trail.

Douglas County schools at Lake Tahoe to use main bus stops only due to road conditions

Due to current road conditions, bus RT 202 will be using these main stops:
- For George Whittell High School - the stop for Upper Kingsbury /Tramway/ area will be at SKI and TINA from 6:30 a.m. to 6:40 a.m.
- The stop for Chimney Rock students will be KINGSBURY and MANOR at 7:02 a.m.
- All other stops remain the same
- For Zephyr Cove Elementary School - the stop for Upper Kingsbury/ Tramway/Andria area will be SKI and TINA from 7:40 a.m. to 7:50 a.m.
Senior Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy starts in Douglas County in January

The Senior Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy will be held over the course of one week, Monday, January 23 through Friday, January 27. Classes will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, located at 1038 Buckeye Road, Minden, Nevada. This academy is open to seniors who reside anywhere in Douglas County.

The observatory is named after the college’s first president and opened in 2003 with astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon, lecturing at opening ceremonies.
In honor of this milestone anniversary, WNC Foundation and the JCDO Director Dr. Thomas Herring have worked together to create some spectacular astrophotography for its annual fundraising note card campaign.

They join other Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) receiving funds to help Latino/a/x/e and low-income students who are interested in pursuing education and careers in STEM.

Lucky Beaver Bar & Burger raises $10,000 South Lake Tahoe charities

The event was founded by Lucky Beaver co-owner Mike Leeper after he was notified of a toy & food shortage in the Lake Tahoe Basin for the holiday. Mike and his staff took it upon themselves to not only purchase toys but also supported the annual Heavenly Village Turkey Drive. The public, patrons, players, and staff all support the Lucky Beaver Toy Drive and the turnout for 2022 was incredible.
City of South Lake Tahoe reopens charging and warming room at Senior Center

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The City of South Lake Tahoe will re-open the charging and warming station at the Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd., starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13 for a 24-hour period.
As Liberty Utilities continues to work to restore power, the City recognizes many have been without power for more than 48 hours and want to provide a safe and warm location to recharge devices. Staff will be onsite, but no other services will be provided.
Challenges of restoring power after the recent South Lake Tahoe storm

That is when another large section of customers should be back online according to Liberty Sr. Director of Operations Lindsay Maruncic.
"We are working on clearing a major outage today," said Maruncic Tuesday afternoon.
Conservancy grants $305,000 to Washoe Tribe to improve forest, watershed, and wildfire resilience

The grant helps increase the Tribe’s capacity to participate in forest, watershed, and wildfire resilience projects at Tahoe, as well as to advance the use of cultural prescribed burning and to cultivate culturally significant native plants.
South Lake Tahoe City Council selects Cristi Creegan as mayor, Cody Bass as mayor pro tem
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/13/2022 - 10:04amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During the annual realignment of the South Lake Tahoe City Council, Cristi Creegan was elected as mayor, and Cody Bass was elected mayor pro team.
The terms are for one year but Bass brought up again his desire to make these two positions for nine months so all five would have a chance to be mayor during their four-year term as a council member. It was approved previously but the City Code prevented it so any future changes would have to result in a code change.
Douglas County closes Kahle Community Center warming shelter

Two-hour delay start to Lake Tahoe Unified Schools on Tuesday, 90-minute delay for Douglas
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/12/2022 - 6:02pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will be on a two-hour delayed start to school on Tuesday, December 13. Many families and staff have been without power for an extended period of time, and many are still shoveling snow to get out of their homes.
As a result of this storm, many are still dealing with the impacts of the snow, including downed trees and damage. LTUSD schools are experiencing similar impacts and could use the additional time to prepare for students.
Douglas County opens warming shelter at Kahle Community Center

Lucky Beaver takes over Lakeside Inn tradition of feeding Douglas County deputies and court staff

For years Lakeside Inn and Casino brought over a meal for the staff in the building including deputies, clerks, and court staff including the judge. When they closed there was nobody to fill the slack until Lucky Beaver Bar & Grill staff prepared a large meal for them.

Don't taste it to determine if it's okay to eat! It may not be safe to eat after the loss of power and you may need to throw away food that could make you sick.

Heavenly is reported 68" of new snow over the last 48 hours.
Sierra-at-Tahoe reports 50"-78" over the last 7 days.
Kirkwood reports 48" of snow in the last 48 hours.
Palisades Tahoe reports 69" of new snow over the last 7 days.
Diamond Peaks reports 42" of snow from the latest storm.
There are still road controls on all major area highways.

NV Energy and Liberty Utilities report some continued outages
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/12/2022 - 8:02amNV Energy reports 1,062 customers at Lake Tahoe between Stateline and Glenbrook still do not have power. At this time they expect restoral by 9:30 a.m. Monday.
Liberty Utilities reports 6.050 customers of theirs around Lake Tahoe remain without power as well, with expected restoral by noon Monday. Most of the outages are on the South Shore but there are areas around Fallen Leaf Lake, Kings Beach, and a couple of other pockets still out as well.
LTCC, DCSO, TTUSD among school closures or delays on Monday around Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe Unified School District schools are closed.
Lake Tahoe Community College's campus will be closed on Monday, December 12, due to widespread power outages in the area. Monday's final exams will be rescheduled, and students will be notified by their instructors.
Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District schools are closed.

Winter weather warning continue around Lake Tahoe as crews work on restoring power/clearing roads

Even though the heaviest snowfall is most likely over, another 3-5" of snow is expected at lake level in South Lake Tahoe during the day Sunday. A High Avalanche Warning is in place for the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains between Yuba Pass (Hwy 49) on the north and Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4) on the south, including the greater Lake Tahoe area.
Over 13,000 Liberty Utilities customers without power around Lake Tahoe, over 1400 without in NV Energy area
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/11/2022 - 7:51amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A large portion of Liberty Utilities customers on the South Shore, and some spread around Lake Tahoe are without power Sunday morning.
Most were restored by 1:30 a.m. this morning, but it was short-lived with power going out again after 5 a.m.
Crews are working to get the power restored and, according to the outage website, they hope the power is up by 8 a.m., after that for Portala and North Shore.

The Tahoe Swim Team has recently regrouped as a local nonprofit and unexpectedly had to start over from scratch. Stolen car chase ends in South Lake Tahoe with one arrested
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/10/2022 - 7:29pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An Incline Village, Nev. man was arrested Thursday night after a stolen car chase that went through Washoe County, Douglas County, and ended in South Lake Tahoe.
Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) called South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) to alert them just before 7:30 p.m. on December 8 that they were inbound into the city limits in pursuit of a stolen vehicle, a 1999 Expedition. SLTPD went to Stateline to put out spike strips on the highway but missed the car that was going at a reported 90 mph.

New Lakeview Express officially opens at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe

The $7.5M Lakeview zone project was the largest capital improvement project in the resort’s history and changes the way skiers and riders experience the mountain. Lakeview Express caters to low-level and intermediate skiers and snowboarders, and the new Lakeside trail offers expansive views of Lake Tahoe. It is the preferred route to access the popular Around the World trail.
Highway over Monitor Pass joins Ebbetts, Sonora and Tioga passes and closes for winter
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/09/2022 - 9:24amThe California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has closed State Route 89/Monitor Pass between Route 4 in Alpine County and U.S. 395 in Mono
County for the winter season.
Monitor Pass has been closed since November 28 due to snow, but on Thursday Caltrans extended the closure through the winter season.
Route-4/Ebbetts Pass, Route-108/Sonora Pass, and Route 120/Tioga Pass also are closed for the winter season.
The recent storms, and accumulation of snow, make the seasonal closures necessary for the safety of motorists and Caltrans crews.
