Calm start to the week in Lake Tahoe, then a series of storms with heavy snow expected

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A series of Pacific winter storms will bring periods of stormy weather to much of California and Nevada next week. There will be few, if any, meaningful breaks in the weather for the Sierra once
the storms begin on Tuesday, so plan ahead.

Quiet weather continues through Monday at Lake Tahoe, then stormy weather returns Tuesday and Wednesday with rain and snow. Snow levels are expected
to rise on Wednesday so very wet snow or a mix of rain and snow is expected for the Tahoe Basin which may limit snowfall potential below 6500-7000 feet.

Keep Tahoe bears wild - Secure that crawl space

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. Winter is here and as bears search for dens for the cold months ahead, they may decide that your house in the Lake Tahoe Basin is just the right place.

Black bears typically enter dens between mid-November and December. Wild bears usually look for natural dens in rock crevices, under fallen logs or hollow trees, or dig into the root mass of trees. However, in the Tahoe Basin many homes and properties can become a replacement for natural dens, especially:

Outbuildings
Porches, decks and crawl spaces
Vacation homes
Campers and RVs

North Lake Tahoe Resort Association grants $50,000 for regional events

TAHOE CITY, Calif. – As part of its annual special events partnership funding, the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association (NLTRA) recently granted $50,000 in support of new and returning regional events that will contribute to the local economy in 2022 by driving overnight visitation and creating a well-rounded variety of events in the region.

Douglas County Sheriff's deputy stabbed by suspect during struggle and arrest

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A 25-year-old Gardnerville man considered "armed and dangerous" was arrested Friday following a traffic enforcement stop.

Thomas James Meagher was pulled over by deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) in the area of Ironwood and Pinewood drives in Minden at 2:23 p.m. Meagher was wanted by the Nevada Department of Parolee and Probation and has had a very violent criminal history according to DCSO.

Vehicle registration renewal drop-off services return to Tahoe General Services Office

STATELINE, Nev. - The Douglas County Clerk Treasurer’s Office has announced the return of Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) vehicle registration renewals being processed at the Tahoe General Services Office in Stateline.

As of January 1, 2022, the public will again be able to drop off vehicle registration renewals with payment at the Minden Clerk’s Office, the Treasurer’s Office located in the Historic Courthouse at 1616 8th Street, or the Tahoe General Services outside dropbox in Stateline.

South Lake Tahoe emergency shelter being demobilized

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City is demobilizing the shelter it had set up with the Red Cross to assist with the significant lack of power throughout the community.

Because conditions have improved with power being restored to the majority of homes, the shelter was no longer operational as of 9:00 a.m. Friday, December 17.

The shelter opened on Wednesday after a winter storm hit South Lake Tahoe with wet, heavy snow and winds. the result was a power outage to much of the community with some going without electricity for over three days.

It Took a Village…

Two years ago these boys had tears of sadness after making it to the semi-final of the NorCal State Cup and losing on a cold rainy day. This past Sunday, those tears were now tears of joy, as they were crowned as the U13 NorCal Gold State Cup Champions. According to NorCal Premier Soccer, over 700 teams start the tournament in the age brackets of U11-U13. COVID canceled the tournament last season, then this Fall our entire town evacuated due to fire, followed by no practices because of snow, but still, these boys showed up and played every time they had the chance.

Emergency roadwork overnight to close I80 and Highway 20

Caltrans is alerting motorists that Interstate 80 and State Highway 20 in the Sierra will be closed early Saturday morning for PG&E emergency repair work.

PG&E crews will be repairing a transmission line at Cisco Grove and a distribution line at Kingvale, then run over interstate 80 to re-establish power to the lines, which were damaged and fell onto the interstate during a storm earlier this week that closed the interstate for several hours.

Weekly COVID-19 wrap-up for counties around Lake Tahoe

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been 24 new cases of COVID-19 and one new death recorded since yesterday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 17,037. In the Quad Counties, there were 16 deaths, 215 new cases this week. In Placer County, the average daily new cases are 45.86, and there were 5 new deaths recorded this week. In Washoe County, 113 daily new cases, 7 new deaths.

Moose Lodge delivers 50 boxes of food to families at Family Resource Center

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For eleven years, the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge 1632 has supplied boxes of food or money for local families in need, and Christmas 2021 is no different. On Thursday, December 16, members of the lodge delivered 50 brightly decorated boxes, each packed full of canned goods, pasta, vegetables, potatoes, tortillas, and everything else needed to feed a family a big holiday meal. Each family also received a large spiral ham, which was purchased through generous donations from Moose and community members.

TRPA updates regional mitigation fee to match transportation plan

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. –The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board on Wednesday approved an update to a regional mitigation fee for new projects. The updated mobility mitigation fee will help offset new, in-basin vehicle trips with investments in traffic-reducing projects, the agency said today. The update replaces an air quality mitigation fee that has been in place for decades without annual updates for inflation.

Wreaths Across America at South Lake Tahoe's Happy Homestead Cemetery

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and Happy Homestead Cemetery are hosting Wreaths Across America 2021 on Saturday, December 18.

They will have a ceremony honoring active military personnel, veterans and first responders.

Concern spread around the country after a TikTok social media rumor warned of violence at schools on the day that many of them start a two-week holiday break. It is unclear where the school threat rumor emerged, but the challenge suggests numerous school shootings will take place on December 17.

Paralympic bobsledding hopeful turns to WNC to fulfill next dream

Motivation to move on from a harrowing and life-changing snowboarding accident in 2013 didn’t happen overnight for first-year Western Nevada College student Steven Jacobo of Gardnerville, Nev.

But it did happen.

In fact, following a year of recovery from T-9 and T-10 vertebrae fractures to his spinal cord left him a paraplegic, Jacobo found inspiration from others who are paralyzed and how they proceeded with their lives.

Bottom barriers being placed during invasive plant removal project at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), in partnership with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), has begun the largest invasive plant removal project at Lake Tahoe. This new project will remove 17 acres of invasive plants in the Taylor and Tallac creeks and marshes as part of a comprehensive restoration of one of the last natural wetlands in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Left unchecked, aquatic invasive plants can have devastating effects on Tahoe’s ecosystem and recreational resources.

As latest storm passes, controls up on Lake Tahoe area roads

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the latest Winter Storm Warning expires at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, roads around the Lake Tahoe Basin have controls in place. Several more inches of snow fell overnight so use caution if out driving.

Controls in place as of 7:00 a.m. Thursday:

Chains Required, All Vehicles Except 4-Wheel Drive with Snow Tires - on US-50 from mile post 52.1 in El Dorado County to mile post 70.6 in El Dorado County in California.

Snow day for LTUSD, TTUSD, delayed start for LTCC, Douglas, Washoe schools

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District is on a snow day today, Thursday, December 16.

Tahoe Truckee Unified School District is also on a snow day, all schools are closed. All school activities are canceled unless notified otherwise.

Lake Tahoe Community College will open at 10:00 a.m. due to a power outage on campus. The first final exam block is at 11:00 a.m. There are hot showers in the gym available for students and staff.

All WCSD schools will be on a two-hour delay for Thursday, Dec. 16 due to hazardous road conditions. Winter bus stops in effect.

Liberty crews working around the clock to get power up to Lake Tahoe customers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty crews continue to work around the clock to restore power, including rebuilding electric infrastructure in areas that can be safely accessed.

According to Liberty, most customers had their power restored today but, as of 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, about 1,900 customers were still out of power.

Because of severe storm damage, avalanche conditions, and inaccessibility, some customers may be out of power for an extended period, said a Liberty spokesperson.

Apache Avenue Pedestrian Safety and Connectivity Project meeting Thursday

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County, Department of Transportation, Tahoe Engineering Unit is holding a public meeting for the Apache Avenue Pedestrian Safety and Connectivity Project on Thursday, December 16 at 5:30 p.m.

This project will include the construction of roadway improvements on lower Apache Avenue from Highway 50 to East San Bernardino that will include a shared-use path, sidewalk, drainage, and roadway safety improvements.

South Lake Tahoe opens emergency shelter for those impacted by snowstorm and power outages

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – In coordination with the American Red Cross, the City of South Lake Tahoe has opened a partner shelter for anyone impacted by the snowstorm and power outages. The shelter is located at the City’s Recreation and Swim Complex at 1180 Rufus Allen Boulevard and is open to all residents of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County.

It will be open 24/7 until further notice.

At the Recreation Center, they will offer electrical charging stations, meals, cots, and blankets for overnight stays.

El Dorado County hires new head of planning department

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors yesterday unanimously appointed
Karen Garner as Director of Planning and Building, effective January 1, 2022.

“We are delighted to have someone of Karen’s caliber join the County and help lead the department through the current challenging issues and those that are on the horizon,” said John Hidahl, Board chair. “She has an
excellent background which is well suited to take on the responsibilities of this position.”

Power could be out another 12-24 hours in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE Tahoe, Calif. - With lows dipping into the single digits overnight, a lack of heat and electricity had many concerned and bundled up in blankets. The reason for the outage was the winter storm at the beginning of the week with heavy, wet snow and rain before temperatures dropped and it was just snow. With 2-4 feet of new snow around the South Shore, not only was electricity a concern but also shoveling and plowing out from homes.

JoAnne Bottini ~ February 19, 1944 – December 1, 2021

JoAnne unexpectedly passed away on December 1, 2021, while knitting, one of her favorite pastimes.

She was born in San Francisco on February 19, 1944, to Robert and Dorothy Henderson. She grew up in Rialto, Calif., graduating from St. Bernadine’s High School in 1961. Thereafter, she attended San Bernardino Valley College. In 1965, she graduated from San Francisco State College earning her Teacher’s Credential. She began her teaching career in Santa Rosa, a profession she dearly loved and dedicated her life to.

Road controls in place for Lake Tahoe roads

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As many still dig out of their homes and businesses as they wait for power to be restored around Lake Tahoe, a new storm is on the way and road controls remain in place for all mountain highways.

Snow is expected to return by 1:00 p.m. today as new winter weather warning goes into place.

Tube Tahoe opens winter operations Saturday

MEYERS, Calif. - All the snow that fell at Lake Tahoe this week helped one local business open up before the holidays - Tube Tahoe. They will open on Saturday, December 18, and operate from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Tube Tahoe has winter operations at Tahoe Paradise Golf at 3201 US 50 in Meyers and offers people a way to enjoy the snow in a safe environment. At over 500 feet in length, their machine groomed tubing lanes are some of the longest in the area. The price of admission covers a tube rental and 1.5 hours of hill use.

Snow Day for LTCC, Lake Tahoe Unified School and Incline Village schools

UPDATE 12/15: Tahoe Truckee Unified School will open schools on a regular minimum day schedule, except Donner Trail Elementary. Today is a snow day for all Donner Trail and all Donner Summit students due to a power outage and accessibility issues on the Summit and at the facility.

Douglas County schools are open with a regular schedule. The two Lake Tahoe schools will have a Main Bus Stop Only procedure and students in the Chimney Rock area will be picked up and dropped off at Kahle Community Center.

Ready for some more snow? New storm for Lake Tahoe, with more snow next week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As many around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada still try and dig out from the first storm this week, another is brewing and heading to the mountains.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from Wednesday, December 15 at 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 16.

Crews working around the clock to restore power and clear roads around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two-to-three feet of snow fell overnight through the South Shore, creating havoc on roads, power outages, and closures.

Every resource from all agencies involved in power restoral and road clearing is in the field, working as quickly as possible.

The City of South Lake Tahoe said their crews are working two 12-hour shifts in the eight zones the city is divided into for snow removal. There are 10 staff members on those teams. With so much snow, expect plow gates on the first run through neighborhoods to not be able to contain all snow.

New indoor mask mandate for California starts Wednesday

California is bringing back a statewide indoor mask mandate in public places starting Wednesday, December 15.

Gov. Gavin Newsom's administration announced the state will be under a new mask mandate due to concern around rising cases and the spread of the Omnicron variant. The mandate is in place through January 15, 2022.

Vaccine Clinic at Boys and Girls Club postponed to Dec. 21

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe had planned on having a COVID-19 vaccine clinic for youth ages 5 to 11 years on Tuesday, but due to power outages and unplowed roads, it has been postponed to Tuesday, December 21 during the same hours, from 3:00 p.m. - 7;00 p.m.

Liberty Utilities reports several power outages around Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is reporting widespread outages due to the current storm conditions. Their crews are working diligently to restore power to all our customers but there is no estimated time of restoral.

As of 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Liberty reports 8,643 of its 47,135 customers, or 18.3 percent, have no power:

South Lake Tahoe/El Dorado County - 6,472 customers are without power at this time

Placer County - 1,878 customers are without power at this time

Plumas County - 254 customers are without power at this time

Alpine County - 2 customers without power

Barton Health snow information for South Lake Tahoe and Nevada offices

UPDATE 2:00 PM: As the power outage continues to affect the medical offices located on Barton Health's California campus, today's appointments will be rescheduled. Patients will be contacted by their provider's office to reschedule.

Services located within the Center including Orthopedics, Rheumatology, Rehabilitation, and Performance will be rescheduled as needed; patients will be contacted if their appointment is being rescheduled.

Services within the hospital will continue as scheduled.

Patients experiencing a medical emergency are instructed to call 9-1-1.

Snow to start tapering off in South Lake Tahoe as people in the Sierra dig out from storm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The promised storm may have been more rain than snow at the beginning, but has since made up with snow measuring in feet this morning.

Heavenly Mountain Resort reports 36" of new snow in the last 24 hours. Kirkwood is closed today. Northstar reports 29" of snow the last 24 hours, and Palisades reports the same. Check before hitting the slopes to see the lift status due to wind and snow.

The current winter storm warning for South Lake Tahoe is in place until 10:00 p.m. Tuesday with the next one set for Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. to Thursday at 12:00 p.m.

Snow Day around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is no school today around Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District- Due to snow and further anticipated school, all schools are closed.

Lake Tahoe Community College - Is closed. All finals scheduled for Tuesday are moved to Thursday.

Douglas County - All Valley Schools, (Valley and DNO) will be on a 90-minuted delayed start today, Tuesday. December 14th due to hazardous road conditions.

Classes will begin and buses will pick up students 90 minutes later than regularly scheduled.

Patricia Ann Clothier ~ 1960 - 2021

Patricia "Patti" Clothier was born on June 12, 1960, in Minot, North Dakota. After many years of living in Southern California, she moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1999 and enjoyed the mountain lifestyle with her husband, children, and an abundance of friends. Patti passed away peacefully from medical complications with her husband Steve at her bedside on December 6, 2021.

Douglas County closes some Lake Tahoe offices due to storm warning, valley may have delays

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno for the Greater Lake Tahoe and Minden/Gardnerville area. The warning is in effect from 5:00 p.m. Monday, December 13, through 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 14, 2021.

Due to the potential of significant snow and high winds creating hazardous road conditions Douglas County officials have closed the following Lake Tahoe offices for Tuesday, December 14, 2021:

COVID-19 cases for South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been 82 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths recorded since Friday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 16,941. The county's dashboard is down but expected to be available Tuesday. The "new case rate" and count per 100,000 residents have not been updated due to the lack of a dashboard Monday.

Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 973 cases - +7 - The 14-day new case rate is 28 with 206 per 100,000 residents.
El Dorado Hills - 3610 cases - +14 - The 14-day new case rate is 61 with 144 per 100,000 residents.

Three more black bear cubs calling Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care their temporary home

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three more bear cubs have arrived at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) in South Lake Tahoe. Thelma, Louise, and Bodie arrived and have joined Ponderosa who came last week.

El Dorado Transit to operate South Lake Tahoe connector buses on upcoming holidays

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado Transit will have its offices and many routes closed for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Years Day, but the Sacramento/South Lake Tahoe connecting bus will operate on a holiday schedule.

Due to adverse weather conditions, the Sacramento/ South Lake Tahoe Connecting bus is not operating on December 13 and 14.
