Should be pretty capable, no? Not to mention quite good considering how fond I was of the entry four-cylinder model a year prior.


What's good?

Robert “Rocky” Duarte, age 85, passed away on May 25, 2022.

Rocky was born on April 10, 1937, to Antone and Dorothy Duarte, in San Francisco, California. Rocky and his three brothers and two sisters spent their childhood in Pescadero, California, where he met his future wife, Yvonne. He attended Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo. When he graduated from high school, Rocky spent several years working for Pacific Telephone Company.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Visit with Lake Tahoe Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler on Monday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the District's office at 1021 Al Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

He has been holding these meetings on the first Monday of each month as an opportunity for students, families, and community members to get to know Dr. Todd Cutler in an informal setting, receive updates on District happenings, engage in conversation, and ask questions.

Tonight's visit will focus on District safety.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High School Student Art Showcase will be held at Emanate Gallery June 9-11.

Emanate Gallery is inside the Crossing at Tahoe Valley. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, June 9 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Art and photography will be displayed for parents and the community to view and enjoy.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a return of high pressure this week, leading to drier conditions and light winds on tap for Monday and Tuesday. The significant warmup of the summer season arrives by midweek, with temperatures rising to 15 degrees above normal by the end of the week.

Monday - Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 72. Light south wind becoming southwest 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Douglas County announced this week that Melissa Elges-Blosser has been promoted to the position of chief of staff. She will start in the new role on June 11.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe. The advisory is in effect until 11 p.m. Sunday.

Winds will be from the southwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Waves on the lake will be 2 to 4 feet.

Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Disney's smash hit movie comes to life on the South Tahoe High stage as the student thespians present their spring musical production June 9-11.

The high-energy "Disney's High School Musical" will feature the same songs and dances everyone has come to love on the big screen - "We're Breaking Free," "Stick To The Status Quo," and "We're All In This Together." Enjoy the singing and dancing you saw in the movie.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two-hundred-forty-two teams took off from Reno today on the annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay. The relay teams go 24/7 until ending back in Reno on Saturday.

Runners will be seen this evening through the South Shore.

The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey course is like no other, given the combination of natural scenery, world-class attractions, and historical points of interest. It is a physical and mental challenge for all runners, yet at the same time, it’s a fair course.

Prior to 2015, rattlesnakes were not seen in the Lake Tahoe Basin. It was that year when a large rattlesnake from underneath the porch of a home in the Bijou neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe.

"That was the first documented rattlesnake within the Lake Tahoe Basin that we, or anyone in the Tahoe Biologist Interagency Group, are aware of," said Dr. Will Richardson said at the time in a story he wrote.

Richardson is the executive director of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS).

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three families are waiting in the wings to live in the three new homes provided through the Saint Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) in South Lake Tahoe.

The South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club is hosting its annual Kid's Fishing Derby at Sawmill Pond on Saturday, June 4 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sawmill Pond is located at the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Sawmill Rd. in South Lake Tahoe.

This time-honored tradition is free to all children aged 14 years and younger. Fishing tackle and bait are available. There will also be expert guidance from Tahoe Fly Fishing.

A free fish cleaning table will be set up.

Hot dogs, chips and lemonade will be provided.

Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to this fun, hands-on restoration event. By pitching in, you will help improve the ecosystem function and the wildlife habitats that surround Lake Tahoe. Healthy forests and meadows act as natural pollution filters to Keep Tahoe Blue.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to vote for Brooke Laine for El Dorado County Board of Supervisors District 5. She is eminently qualified and extremely capable. Brooke has served on the South Lake Tahoe City Council several times, and I have seen her in action there. Brooke has the ability to listen carefully and when she speaks, it is well thought out and succinct. Therefore, people listen and with her help, can make compromises for the benefit of everyone.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - 2022 fire season restrictions are now in place for the City of South Lake Tahoe and will remain in place until further notice.

Starting Wednesday, June 1, no charcoal or wood fires are permitted in the city limits. The use of natural gas (NG), propane (LPG), or pellet BBQ grills, smokers, and firepits are permissible unless a red flag warning is issued.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - A Gardnerville man died on May 21, 2022 in a single vehicle rollover crash in the area of Old Highway 50 and Prey Meadow in the Glenbrook area of Lake Tahoe.

Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to a report of the crash at 3:45 p.m.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a red 2010 GMC Canyon pickup was traveling west on private property when, for unknown reasons, went off the roadway to the left and overturned. The driver was partially ejected from the vehicle.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The popular Sierra Tahoe Children’s Summer Theater Workshop is back! It is the perfect way to kick off the summer for those entering 1st grade through those entering 9th grade.

Participants work on acting, singing, dancing, auditioning, and more. As always, everyone will be cast in the production.

Unexpectedly leaving this earthly planet on December 31, 2021, Bob Cook’s life was, and is, the definition of service to others. Born in Southern California on November 22, 1948, Bob moved to Zephyr Cove, Nev. in 1971 after serving honorably in the U.S. Army in the late 60s/early 70s during
the Vietnam War with the 82nd “Hell Cats” as a Door-Gunner for his brother Jeff, among other duties.

Bob earned a degree in Fire Science and worked for the Tahoe-Douglas Fire Department where he became a Firefighter/Bomb Squad Technician. Bob later worked for UPS until his retirement in 2002.

TRUCKEE, Calif. – Tahoe Expedition Academy (TEA) is taking students on an adventure of the mind this summer. TEA is hosting a Summer Math Enrichment Program (aka “Math Camp”) for students entering grades 5-9 in the 2022-2023 school year. Sessions are two weeks each from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. each day, Monday through Thursday. Students can attend one, two, or all three sessions.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Equipment is being moved into the neighborhood and powerline corridor near Montgomery Estates in preparation for a mechanical whole tree thinning operation that will start this week. Work is scheduled to begin in Montreal Units 6, 26, and 1006 (see map above) at the end of High Meadows Trail off of Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe.
