Agencies prepare for prescribed fire operations this fall

When it does begin, there will be smoke but the public can keep informed by looking at locations and deals at tahoelivingwithfire.com. There will be a map on this page. Harmful algal blooms now detected at two South Lake Tahoe beaches

Signs are being placed at both beaches to alert the public of the possible dangers should animals drink the affected water, of if people swim in the area.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is presenting another of their Tahoe History Talks on Tuesday, October 19 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the historic Camp Richardson Hotel.
The topic this week is the history of the Harveys' bombing in 1980. Phillip Sublett will present the story of the colorful group of crooks and their bungled history of the extortion attempt after placing the 1,000 pound bomb on the second floor of the Stateline casino.
The incident led it to be largest domestic bombing on U.S. soil at the time.

as the storm exits the region. Plan on variable road conditions for the morning commute, especially along the higher passes, as there were some road closures, chain controls, and delays overnight.

I80 closed for awhile Sunday as the California Highway Patrol dealt with numerous spin-outs and jackknifed trucks.
After the last bit of the weather system moves through, Monday's forecast is mostly sunny, with a high near 45 and a low of 19. South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

As the evacuation zones grew larger with El Dorado County residents leaving behind everyday essentials like prescription medication, food, and shelter, we knew that we would need to get money into the hands of evacuees as quickly as possible.
Tahoe Fund meets campaign goal for new Tunnel Creek singletrack
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/17/2021 - 5:32pmThe Tahoe Fund has announced that it has met and exceeded its campaign goal of raising $50,000 for a new Tunnel Creek Singletrack thanks to individual donors, a major gift from the Verstappen Family Foundation and a match by the Spaht family. Once built, the trail will be a 2.3-mile multi-use trail that will provide users with a new alternative when accessing the Marlette Flume Trail, the Incline Flume Trail and the Tahoe Rim Trail.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/16/2021 - 8:29pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter (yes, winter) Weather Advisory is in effect for Lake Tahoe from 7:00 p.m. Sunday to 5:00 a.m. Monday. A quick hitting storm will sweep across the Sierra and western Nevada with strong and gusty winds expected Sunday.
Snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches above 7000 feet, 1 to 2 inches below 7000 feet to lake level. The National Weather Service (NWS) said localized higher amounts in heavier bands can be expected.
Shops at Heavenly Village donate 500 turkeys for local charities, turkey drive still on
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/16/2021 - 6:45pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The small businesses who are part of the Shops at Heavenly Village have surpassed their goal of getting 500 turkeys together for Christmas Cheer and Phoenix Food Pantry this Thanksgiving.
In 2020, there was a big shortage of turkeys for families in need in South Lake Tahoe. The Shops jumped to the task and 300 turkeys were donated to the two groups who help feed local residents.

Lake Tahoe area recreation facilities start winter closures

Seasonal closures apply to many National Forest recreation sites including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and forest roads.
Campgrounds, picnic areas, and beach facilities on National Forest lands managed by Tahoe Recreation, a division of California Land Management, will close at the end of the day on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021.
USFS lifts Lake Tahoe backcountry closure for areas outside Caldor Fire footprint

ROUND HILL, Nev. - A "Community Thank the Firefighters Benefit" is being held at Casey's at Round Hill on Saturday, October 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Comedian and local radio personality Howie Nave will serve as the event's MC for the evening which will feature firefighter equipment demonstrations, stories and live music. Casey's is offering free appetizers.
The community is invited to visit with firefighters and show their appreciation during not only the Caldor Fire, but during all fire emergencies.

Reduced fire closure area in Eldorado National Forest
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/14/2021 - 9:08pmThe Caldor Fire Closure Area on the Eldorado National Forest will be reduced beginning Friday, October 15 now that fire containment is at 98 precent, weather has moderated and some areas of fire suppression repair and hazard tree removal have been completed. After this story was written the backcountry closure for Lake Tahoe was lifted as well (see here).

Garfield Ware, a young Navy seaman at the time, was on board the USS Lexington when the Japanese attacked the base in Hawaii.
On Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Veterans Alliance organized a special celebration for Ware, one of the last Pearl Harbor and WWII survivors still alive.

While containment lines are no longer being threatened, the extreme drought conditions that helped the fire consume more than 220,000 acres will keep the fire active until a heavier snow or rain soaks through. As welcome as that will be for the fire, it also has us bracing for potential post-fire impacts from ash, sediment, and debris.

The El Dorado Community Foundation announces Caldor Fire recovery grants for nonprofits

This grant is open to all nonprofits serving El Dorado County who are specifically working to help residents and communities recover from the losses and trauma of the Caldor Fire.
The Foundation challenges all to think creatively and outside the lane normally occupied by program services, to address any one of the topics below:

• Childhood development and wellness
• Youth Development
• Organizational development of emerging community organizations
Caltrans to start emergency roadwork on US50 and SR89
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/14/2021 - 3:57pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. – Two emergency contracts are in place to repair sections of U.S. Highway 50 and State Highway 89 that were damaged during the devastating Caldor Fire that has burned nearly 222,000 acres of the Eldorado National Forest and land in the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
Work along the highways will include hazardous tree and debris removal; rockfall protection; cleaning culverts, catch basins and drainage ditches; guardrail replacement; pavement repairs, and erosion control.
Lake Tahoe non-profits receive $85,000 from American Century Championship
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/14/2021 - 3:44pmAnother $85,000 was given to 19 Lake Tahoe area non-profits by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) and American Century Championship on Thursday. The money comes from the 2021 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe in July.
Normally an in-person check presentation event, this year's awardees were announced during a virtual meeting of the LTVA board.
El Dorado County Fire donates training gear to Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at LTCC
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/13/2021 - 8:11pmEl Dorado County Fire Protection District (EDCFPD) has donated dozens of sets of turnout gear to students at the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at Lake Tahoe Community College. The firefighting gear will provide realistic training equipment for fire academy students to wear while they learn the hands-on skills necessary to be firefighters.
Even though the donated gear has lived out a full service life with EDCFPD, the college students in the academy will be able to use the turnouts as they train to be firefighters.
NDOT work at Cave Rock Monday to cause lane shifts and reductions
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/13/2021 - 6:52pmLane shifts and reductions will take place Monday, October 18 on U.S. 50 through the Cave Rock tunnels at Lake Tahoe as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) removes rock from the slope above the tunnels.
Between 7:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., U.S. 50 will be reduced to one lane in each direction and westbound traffic will be routed through the eastbound Cave Rock tunnel. Motorists are advised to slow to posted speed limits and travel safely through road work zones.

Lake Tahoe grading season comes to a close
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/13/2021 - 3:53pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The annual grading and digging season for permitted projects in the Lake Tahoe Basin will end on Friday, October 15. After this date all construction sites must be appropriately winterized to protect Lake Tahoe’s famed water quality.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires all construction sites to be winterized by October 15 to help prevent sediment from washing into streams and the lake and to prevent soil compaction and disturbance during the region’s historic period of wet weather.
