Residential burn permits available for El Dorado and Placer counties; Banned in South Lake Tahoe

Starting May 1, residents in unincorporated areas of El Dorado County, Placer County, and Alpine County will be able to receive a residential burn permit. The permits are available to the public for free and allow homeowners to burn dry landscape vegetation (NOT household trash) that originates from the landowner’s property.

The City of South Lake Tahoe does not allow for residential burning at this time due to concerns of wildfire.

Flags to fly at half-staff for former South Lake Tahoe Police Chief and El Dorado County Supervisor Dave Solaro

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Once called the "cornerstone" of South Lake Tahoe, Dave Solaro left his mark on a community he represented for 36 years, first as a police officer, then through the ranks to the police chief, director of public safety, and El Dorado County supervisor.

Solaro passed away Tuesday in Hilton Head, South Carolina, his home since leaving South Lake Tahoe in 2005. He was 78.

Work resumes on Tahoe South Event Center at Stateline

STATELINE, Nev. - Construction on the new Tahoe South Events Center will resume on Monday, May 3, 2021, after the seasonal halt of activity on the site in the parking lot of MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa. New construction fences are up in preparation for excavation, concrete, and foundation work. Completion is anticipated by the end of 2022.

Vaccine clinic at Heavenly on Friday - many slots still available

Barton Health, in partnership with the State of California and Vail Resorts, will host a Pfizer vaccine clinic on Friday, April 30 at Heavenly Ski Resort’s California Base Lodge, 3860 Saddle Rd., South Lake Tahoe.

Live at Lakeview organizers hope to have a couple of shows in August

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The popular Live at Lakeview music series on the shore of Lake Tahoe was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic but organizers are still hoping to try and have a few concerts in August.

In a normal year, Live at Lakeview starts the first Thursday of summer, then weekly until Labor Day. The start is on hold until all mask mandates and social distancing
restrictions are lifted for the state of California.

Another change in lawyers postpones next trial in 2016 South Lake Tahoe murder case

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been 5 years, two months and 29 days since Dennis "Spike" Wright, Jr. was killed in South Lake Tahoe over a planned sale of 104 pounds of marijuana outside of a motel room.

Local law enforcement quickly rounded up the group of suspects from Vallejo, California to Harrison County, Texas, and Oklahoma City.

Truckee, Tahoe City and North Lake Tahoe cancel 4th of July firework and activities

Truckee and North Lake Tahoe regional officials have made the difficult decision to cancel the annual July 3 fireworks at Kings Beach, and the Fourth of July fireworks shows in Donner Lake, Truckee and Tahoe City. Canceled events include the Fourth of July parade, which encompasses the Firecracker Mile in Historic Downtown Truckee, and any other events that take place through July 4 in Truckee and North Lake Tahoe.

North and South Lake Tahoe casinos have "win" of $62 million in March

STATELINE, Nev. - Casinos in the state of Nevada shut down in March 2020 as the coronavirus started to put its grip on public activity. The monthly report of Nevada's non-restricted gaming licensees reflects the dramatic stoppage of gaming activity.

The Gaming Control Board (GCB) reported a total “gaming win” of $1,066,979,987 for the month of March 2021. This amounts to a 72.66 percent increase compared to March 2020, when licensees reported a gaming win of $617,971,174 when they were open just half of the month.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Your actions this week can prevent thousands of yellow jackets wrecking havoc on your summertime picnic or backyard gardening efforts this summer.

The yellow jacket queens have already been seen out in South Lake Tahoe and now is the time to take action before it's too late.

The queens are the only colony member to hibernate in the winter. She emerges in spring and begins to look for a suitable place to build a nest and begin her new colony. By the end of summer one colony can have 4,000 to 5,000 yellow jackets.

700 pounds of trash collected during Earth Day at Heavenly Village area and Spooner Sled Hill

To celebrate #EarthWeekTahoe, volunteers came out in force to clean up winter litter that had been buried under snow until the recent spring melt. Ninety-six volunteers removed more than 700 pounds of trash from Heavenly Village and the litter-plagued, unofficial sledding hill near Spooner Summit during events on April 22, 23, and 24.

While Earth Week is a fitting occasion to combat pollution in Tahoe, litter is a year-round problem that requires constant action to avoid harm to wildlife, the Lake’s delicate ecology, and the Basin’s scenic beauty.

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel celebrates 30th anniversary with a contest

LTUSD prepares for Phase 4 - all students in full day in-person classes four days per week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Monday, April 26, Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is moving to full-day bell schedule at all schools along with an adjusted transportation plan.

Elementary schools will have full-day instruction Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

South Lake Tahoe to see warming trend in the week ahead

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The most recent late season winter storm didn't pan out to what forecasters expected. Some travel impacts remain possible over the Sierra, especially in areas where heavier shower bands set up into Monday and possibly early Tuesday. The rest of the upcoming week will be dry with a significant warming trend later in the week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

South Lake Tahoe firefighters rescue family stranded in snow for hours

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two members of the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) family came to the rescue of a family of four stranded in the mountains north of Lake Tahoe.

Leo Gebhardt and Blake Sturdivan were off duty and driving to a training when they turned a stressful and dangerous situation into one where a family is safe because of their actions.

Over the last weekend in March, Paul and Chris Harper were headed out on an adventure with their two children, 10-year Emi and 4-year-old Ollie. They were going to check out the cinder cones in Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Did you feel them? Series of earthquakes centered in middle of Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Nevada Seismological Laboratory reported a 3.91 magnitude earthquake at 8:33 a.m. Sunday in the middle of Lake Tahoe. The shaking continued with a 2.5 magnitude two minutes later, a 1.9 magnitude at 8:40 a.m., 2.78 magnitude at 8:44 a.m. and 2.1 at 8:54 a.m.

All have been centered about 5.5 miles NNW of South Lake Tahoe, .62 miles WNW of Glenbook.

People in communities around Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley are reporting feeling the earthquakes.

LTUSD School Board meeting Tuesday - Virtual and in-person

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the first time in over a year, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District will invite the public back into the board room for its next meeting on Tuesday, April 27, 2021.

While the meeting will be broadcast via Zoom, the board room will open to accommodate up to 20 observers. Should the maximum capacity be reached, attendees will be asked to also participate via this Zoom link.

Barton Health schedules South Lake Tahoe vaccine clinic for April 30

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health, in partnership with the state of California and Vail Resorts, will host a vaccination clinic on Friday, April 30 at Heavenly Ski Resort’s California Base Lodge. Appointments and priority are determined through MyTurn, the state of California’s universal vaccine sign-up portal. This clinic location and associated appointment options will be available in the portal early next week. Barton Health will announce on BartonHealth.org and its social media channels once those are available for booking through MyTurn.

Fitness Center at LTCC reopening to registered students, staff

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The Fitness Education Center (FEC) inside the Physical Education Building at Lake Tahoe Community College reopens on Monday, May 3. While there will be some limitations in place due to COVID, it is now possible for students to register for Spring quarter FEC-related classes and use the facility once again beginning May 3. Lake Wind Advisory and Winter Storm Watch issued for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Old Man Winter isn't ready to head off to the Southern Hemisphere just quite yet. The National Weather Service in Reno has issued two weather statements - a Lake Wind Advisory and a Winter Storm Watch.

The Lake Wind Advisory is in effect from 5:00 a.m. Saturday to 3:00 a.m. Sunday. They are calling for southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected as are wave heights 2 to 4 feet. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Educators Summit focused on growing Nevada teacher pipeline

Western Nevada College Education (WNC) instructor Sarah Lobsinger is co-leading the first Future Nevada Educators Summit on April 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The virtual summit is a joint effort led by seven Nevada System of Higher Education institutions, including WNC, the Nevada Department of Education, and other teacher licensure networks. The goal of the summit is to grow Nevada’s educator preparation pipeline.

Gardnerville man dies in single car collision in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A 24-year-old Gardnerville man died in a single car crash on Tuesday, April 20, 2021.

At approximately 3:11 p.m., troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to a call of a fatal crash involving a single vehicle on SR-88 at Douglas County Mile 2 in Gardnerville.

Humane Society's 2nd annual Trails for Tails Virtual Run

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT), the nonprofit agency that helps animals from Truckee to South Lake Tahoe, is holding an eight-week fundraiser to help people meet fitness goals while helping them meet fundraising goals.

Starting May 10 the public can help them with their goal of $20,000.

COVID-19 testing site moves from LTCC to Lake Tahoe Airport

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After 11 months of providing the longest-running large scale COVID-19 testing site in El Dorado County, Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is passing the torch and will no longer house the Logistics Health Incorporated test site in its gym.

The El Dorado Office of Emergency Services is relocating its COVID-19 testing center to the airport parking lot. They intend to conduct community COVID-19 testing at the airport/city hall through Fall 2021.

Spring storm heading to Lake Tahoe - snow, rain, wind

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Say it isn't "snow"...a late season winter storm is slatted to bring snow to the Lake Tahoe Basin along with rain and wind starting Saturday. As the week has gone on the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has increased the chance of precipitation and presence of winds.

Until the storm, it will be fairly quiet with dry weather through Friday, according to NWS Reno. Temperatures will warm to above average by Friday.
