SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - St. Theresa’s Bread & Broth (B&B) Monday Meal has seen an increase in the number of community members wanting to enjoy a delicious and filling meal. With the increase in guests, volunteers are now adding tables and chairs to the Grace Hall dining room to accommodate everyone. The dinner guests also enjoy the ‘food to go’ bags filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, and an assortment of meats, canned goods, bread and pastries, and varied food products depending on the generous donations of local businesses.

Helicopter crashes into river in Alpine County, pilot has minor injuries

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - A day of fishing on the East Carson River in Alpine County didn't end up as planned for one man. On Tuesday, October 24, the Alpine County Sheriff's Office received a report of an overdue fisherman who had flown his privately owned helicopter to go fishing.

Alpine County Sheriff Tom Minder and deputies responded to the area of the East Carson River to locate the fisherman. While en route, deputies were notified the fisherman had called 911 to report his helicopter crashed and was currently in the river.

Barton to host mass casualty drill with South Lake Tahoe community partners Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health, in collaboration with local fire, police, and first responders will conduct a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) Exercise on Friday, October 25. The purpose of an MCI exercise is to exercise emergency and healthcare preparedness in the event of a large-scale emergency, ensuring health and safety for the Lake Tahoe community.

National Forest facilities at Lake Tahoe closing for season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - More closing dates have been added to the list of annual closures of National Forest recreation facilities around Lake Tahoe.
Seasonal closures apply to facilities at many recreation areas and sites including beaches, campgrounds, forest roads, parking lots, picnic areas, and trailheads.

Snowmaking kicks into gear at Lake Tahoe ski resorts, November opening dates planned

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Fall is still holding on with plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures in the forecast, but last week's two-day drop cold spell was enough for resorts to start making snow for the 2024-25 ski season.

Northstar and Heavenly will open for skiing and riding on November 22, with Kirkwood following closely on December 6,

All opening dates are subject to change due to conditions. They may be adjusted as time gets closed so check on individual resorts if planning a trip.

Sierra-at-Tahoe's targeted opening date is November 29.

It took a village to build largest affordable housing project in the history of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Leaders from several state, regional, and local agencies gathered at the Sugar Pine Village last Thursday to celebrate the opening of the first phase of 68 affordable housing units. When completed, Sugar Pine Village will be a 248-unit community, transforming what was once vacant state-owned land into affordable housing for families and workers in the Tahoe region.

Forest thinning projects continue around Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) forest thinning (fuels reduction) projects are underway and scheduled to continue through fall 2024, conditions and weather permitting. North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, Liberty Utilities, NV Energy, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit are working together to protect Lake Tahoe communities by reducing excess vegetation (fuels) that can feed unwanted wildfires.

Congressional candidates Kevin Kiley and Jessica Morse debate Tuesday on KCRA

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The two candidates running to represent Congressional District 3 will face off in a debate on Tuesday. While much of South Lake Tahoe does not get California television stations like KCRA, the debate can be seen on the KCRA app. Voters in District 3 include those from the northern Sierra to Death Valley, including South Lake Tahoe, other parts of El Dorado County, and Alpine, Inyo, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sierra Sacramento, and Yuba counties.

Weather temperature roller coaster in South Lake Tahoe with mostly mild days

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It will be another weather roller coaster in South Lake Tahoe this week, from highs near 70, along with a chance of rain and upper-elevation snow. Mild and dry weather will prevail at the beginning of the week, with southwest winds midweek, and unsettled weather and cooler temperatures starting overnight Sunday into early next week.

Tuesday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 67. South wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the City of South Lake Tahoe gets closer to its goal of achieving 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, incoming council members need to understand sustainability and climate action.

Some of the City's climate goals include reducing community greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80 percent by 2040, at least 50 percent by 2030, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2045.

Continued delays between Kings Beach and Tahoe City for SR28 Broadband Project

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of a broadband installation project continuing along SR-28 along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed internet into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

South Tahoe High students hit the big screen Saturday with "Horse-Play"

Forest Service starts year-long public use surveys on Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Visitor Use Monitoring (NVUM) survey is underway on USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) National Forest lands. It will continue through Sep. 30, 2025. The public can expect to encounter California State University, Chico, employees working near developed recreation sites and along National Forest roads. They will be out in all weather conditions wearing bright orange vests near signs that say, “Traffic Survey Ahead.”

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ellen Camacho has been appointed as the new Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) trustee for Area 1, replacing Larry Reilly who did not seek re-election. Since nobody from Area 1 filed to run for office, LTUSD accepted applications and Camacho was announced during a special meeting on October 8. She will officially begin her duties after being sworn in at the December 12, 2024, board meeting.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a cold one overnight in South Lake Tahoe, and overnight temperatures below freezing look like they're here to stay for a while.

As temperatures begin to drop, protecting your home plumbing from the damage and expense caused by frozen pipes is essential. Remember these tips to prepare your home for chilly temps.

Before freezing temperatures set in:

Turn off and drain irrigation systems.
Disconnect and drain all outdoor hoses.
Insulate exposed pipes or faucets.
Seal holes and cracks in exterior walls, foundation, and around pipes.

We are endorsing Bob Anderson for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District school board because he will be an outstanding advocate for the students and will make sure the district is transparent in how it is managed. Bob moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1985 with five years of experience teaching in Southern California. He then taught in LTUSD for 26 years at several different levels and school sites.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has begun the annual process of closing National Forest recreational facilities around the Lake Tahoe Basin for the winter season. Seasonal closures apply to many recreation areas and sites including beaches, campgrounds, forest roads, parking lots, and picnic areas.

Campgrounds on LTBMU land managed by Tahoe Recreation, a division of Vista Recreation, closed Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024, and included Fallen Leaf, William Kent, Kaspian, and Nevada Beach campgrounds.

Fish and Wildlife has not found evidence of wolves in Lake Tahoe Basin or Hope Valley

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was excitement back in 2011 when the first wolf sighting in California in almost 90 years was made when "OR-7" crossed into California northeast of Dorris, a small town in Siskiyou County. Even though OR-7 is back in Oregon, there have been several confirmed sightings of wolves in California.
