South Shore Lake Tahoe local Sid Loomis continues her work with the Undersea Voyager Project in Catalina on September 17. The 16-year-old was part of the original crew that brought a submersible to Lake Tahoe in May of 2009 to study Lake Tahoe and Fallen Leaf, as well as projects in Catalina and Bodega Bay in 2010.
On Saturday, Sept. 17 team leader Scott Cassell will scuba dive from Catalina to Cabrillo Aquarium near Long Beach for a study on sharks.

Flash flood watch continues through 11 p.m.

Update 6:05 p.m.: Moderate to heavy rainfall has been reported in isolated areas around South Lake Tahoe and Meyers, along with several lightning strikes. Lightning likely caused one spot fire high in the trees south of the intersection of Highway 50 and 89 in Meyers. It appeared, however, that heavy rain doused the flames.
Meanwhile, a flash flood watch remains in effect until 11 tonight for portions of California and Western Nevada including the greater Lake Tahoe area, Carson City and Reno.

Power restored to about 3,500 Liberty Energy customers

Liberty Energy reports that power has been restored after a brief outage in South Lake Tahoe this afternoon that affected about 3,500 customers.
Power went out at about 2:30 this afternoon and was fully restored by 3:15 p.m., said Randy Kelly, manager for Liberty Energy. The outage stretched along Pioneer Trail, to Black Bart and included Lake Tahoe Community College and the South Tahoe Public Utility District sewer plant, Kelly said.

Douglas County man dies in motorcycle crash on Spooner

A 25-year-old Minden man died Saturday in a motorcycle crash on U.S. Highway 50 east of the Douglas County line on Spooner, seven miles west of Highway 395 in Carson City, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

According to NHP Trooper Chuck Allen, Edwin Bruno-Mazariego was riding his green 2008 Kawasaki ZX600P motorcycle east bound on the four-lane highway. For reasons still unknown, he failed to negotiate a left hand curve and departed the travel lane striking the adjacent section of guardrail.

Stateline casinos see 25 percent revenue increase in July

Good news for South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos to report this morning. Stateline gaming establishments saw a 25.42 percent increase in revenue over July 2010 figures, according to figures released today from the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Statewide casinos had an overall 3.66 percent increase in "gaming win" for the month.

Thunderstorms move over Lake Tahoe

A band of thunderstorms, carrying pea to marble-sized hail, heavy wind and lightning has moved over the Lake Tahoe region late Sunday. The National Weather Service in Reno began tracking the strong thunderstorm system near Carnelian Bay on the north side of Lake Tahoe nears Kings Beach.

The storm, moving southwest at around 10 mph, carries many lightning bolts, moderate rain amounting to about one half inch per hour, which is reducing visibility in the basin to less than three miles.

CARSON CITY – Residents of this capital city, hit with tragedy earlier in the week with the shooting deaths of four people at a local restaurant, gathered at two somber ceremonies today to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.
About 300 people gathered at Mills Park for the Patriot’s Day – 9-11 Remembrance sponsored by the Capital Baptist Church.
A similar number then gathered at the park to see the unveiling of a 1,600-pound I-beam from the World Trade Center towers donated to the city to form the basis of a 9-11 memorial.
