Barton Health to vaccinate pre-registered high-risk patients at drive-up clinic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health will be vaccinating 1,600 people during a drive-up vaccination clinic for pre-registered high-risk patients on Friday, February 26.

In partnership with the El Dorado County Public Health Department, Barton is receiving the limited allocation of COVID-19 vaccines in support of the county’s vaccination effort. Following California’s tiered, age-based system for vaccination distribution, Barton will administer the doses during an all day long on February 26 at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Tahoe Arts Project hosts virtual magic show in schools and for the public

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In a time when live performances are not possible, the Tahoe Arts Project (TAP) is bringing illusionist Alex Ramon to local school children and to the public with a special virtual performance.

Starting February 22, TAP and Ramon will be in local schools through March 5 with a 30-minute pre-recorded Magic show for grades K-5. Besides Lake Tahoe Unified School the show will also be at Zephyr Cove Elementary and Gardnerville Elementary.

One dies, six rescued in South Lake Tahoe apartment fire

4:15PM Update: One person died in this morning's fire at a South Lake Tahoe apartment building.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to an emergency fire call at 11:17 a.m. Monday. Upon arrival they found six residents hanging out of windows on the 2nd floor and they were all rescued by SLTFR. One resident was able to get out of the 1st floor unit.

A second resident on the first floor was pulled out and CPR was immediately started. Sadly, they succumbed to their injuries.

South Shore shines during NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe

With just a couple of months to plan, the National Hockey League (NHL) worked quickly with local entities to create a unique lakefront outdoor ice arena, one that was made for television due to pandemic restrictions not allowing fans inside.

City to hold practice session on virtual public meeting participation

The South Lake Tahoe City Clerk will be holding a practice session for the public wanting assistance on participating in meetings via ZOOM. On Monday, March 1 at 10:00 a.m., Sue Blankenship will help those interested in the process.

Perhaps it is intimidation with the technology via phones or computers, or just getting questions answered, the City Clerk will help. At every City Council meeting there is a specific time for Public Comment, either addressing an agenda item or general comment.

Mostly sunny and dry week ahead for Lake Tahoe region

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Cool, light northerly flow will persist ahead of high pressure building across the region for Monday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Several cold fronts sweep through the Pacific Northwest and portions of western Nevada this week but they will most likely just brush by without much impact.

Monday and Tuesday will be prime days for outdoor projects or activities, especially since Wednesday will bring those colder temperatures back again.

Planning Commission sees first plans for new Pioneer Trail Pedestrian Improvement Project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission was presented Phase II of the Pioneer Trail Pedestrian Improvement Project, a continuation of the first phase when covered the road from US50 to Larch Avenue in 2013/14. This next phase is about one-half mile long and goes from Larch Avenue to Ski Run Boulevard. Pioneer Trail is used by many pedestrians and bicyclists and the dark stretch that will be addressed in this new phase will create sidewalks, eliminate an intersection, add a bike lane and lighting.

Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra honors first responders with pizza delivery

The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra Foundation was asking themselves, “What can we do to ‘Thank’ the first responders of our community?”

The answer was a simple one. FOOD!!! The club members decided to first acknowledge local Firefighters who work every day to help save lives, help put out fires in and near our homes, and to make life better for ALL of us who live in the South Tahoe community. So, the club decided to honor the men and women of the South Lake Tahoe Fie Rescue and Lake Valley Fire Protection District.

Lake Tahoe sun too much for daytime NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe; Game resumes at 9:00 p.m.

STATELINE, Nev. - Even with a storm an a few inches of snow overnight, the clouds parted just in time for the unique lakeside hockey event at Edgewood Tahoe. Online sales help South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County with third quarter sales tax increase

The third quarter sales tax reports were released this week by the City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County. Both entities collected more sales tax than during the same period in 2019 but most of that was a result of taxes collected from online sales.

Restaurants and hotels in the city limits operated in limited ways due to the pandemic, thus declines materialized in casual dining; hotels/resorts fell 46 percent. Less visitors equated to smaller quantities of fuel being sold; service stations sales dropped 16 percent.

Placer County to offer new path to homeownership for local workforce

Placer workers struggling to afford a home will soon have a new option to make their housing dreams come true.

The county’s Workforce Housing Preservation Program will pay homeowners to deed restrict their properties so that only local workers can purchase or rent them. The program would provide qualifying home buyers a funding source that could be used for a down payment or renovations. The program would also be eligible for recently constructed housing that is deed restricted for local worker occupancy.

Registered nurses from Barton Memorial Hospital to hold public town hall meeting

Registered nurses from Barton Memorial Hospital will be conducting a virtual town hall to update the community on the current status with their contract negotiations with Barton.

The nurses and the hospital have been in contract negotiations for almost three years but things are currently at a standstill ad the contract remains unresolved.

Fire destroys home near South Lake Tahoe

MEYERS, Calif. - Firefighters are still on the scene of a house fire Friday morning. At 8:31 p.m. Thursday, Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) responded to the home on Oneidas Street in Meyers. Upon arrival they found the home fully engulfed in flames and quickly called in available fire agency resources from around Lake Tahoe.

Final finishing touches on outdoor rink for NHLOutdoors at Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - It has been nonstop activity at Edgewood Tahoe for the past two weeks in preparation for this weekend's NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe. The scene on Wednesday looked like the major event it will be - televised coverage of a unique major sporting event.

Truckloads of equipment and the refrigerated ice truck are parked next to the 18th fairway at Edgewood. The ice is done. Towering lights are in place, and banners and signage ready for television and a snow machine is even set up.

Volunteers and drivers needed for Christmas Cheer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Christmas Cheer, one of the South Lake Tahoe nonprofits tasked with keeping food on the tables of local residents, is looking for two volunteer drivers to help them with their weekly operations.

If you can drive a U-Haul and have some free time to help the South Lake Tahoe community, contact Joanne Shope at the Christmas Cheer Office at 1120 3rd Street or by calling (530) 542-4934. The days drivers are needed are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

Weak weather systems moving through Lake Tahoe Thursday-Saturday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a chance for periods of light snow and gusty winds in the Lake Tahoe area through Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

The first part of this weak storm is moving through the region on Thursday with the second part Friday into Saturday.

Snow totals will be light for the first wave, and up to a few inches for the second wave. Up to 1 inch in the Tahoe Basin and higher terrain of northeast
California, with spotty dustings possible Friday night for Western Nevada foothills.

Joint County and City meeting on Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It has been over a year since the last time the South Lke Tahoe City Council and El Dorado County Supervisors held a joint meeting, something that was once a more frequent occurrence. In September 2019 the two entities met with Placerville City Council to receive a presentation on El Dorado Opportunity Knocks Continuum of Care, a countywide strategic plan on homelessness that was just being developed at the time.

On Monday, February 22, the Board and Council will hold a virtual joint meeting starting at 9:00 a.m. There are two items on the agenda:

South Lake Tahoe Community Blood Drive

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next Vitalant Community Blood Drive in South Lake Tahoe will be held on Friday, February 26 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. It is being held in the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation gym.

Filming to cause intermittent delays at Cave Rock Thursday

Film crews will be in the area of Cave Rock on Thursday and drivers can expect intermittent road closures. The Nevada Highway Patrol will close US50 in both directions at times during the day from Logan Creek Drive to Cave Rock Drive until 2:00 p.m.

The crews will be filming a car commercial.

Know the snow before you go - elevated danger of backcountry avalanches around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Snow avalanches kill more people in National Forests than any other natural hazard. Each winter, 25 to 30 people die in avalanches in the United States, and nearly all of these deaths involve recreation on National Forest land.

The high number of avalanche deaths in a seven-day period was just recorded with 14 people dying in an avalanche. This was the deadliest people since the U.S. Forest Service's (USFS) National Avalanche Center started tracking deaths, according to Karl Birkeland, the center's director.

Douglas County hires new Social Services manager

Douglas County has announced the hiring of the new Social Services manager. Caren Witt began working in this new role on February 1 and will be managing Social Services, Community Health Center, Adult Day Club, and the Senior Homemakers Program.

Witt obtained a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2012 and a Master of Social Work from the University of New England in 2017.

The South Tahoe National Little League is trying to put together a 2021 season, and since Spring is less than two months away, it's time to sign up to play.

Children eligible to play must be born between September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2016.

Free virtual Opioid Summit to examine issues in El Dorado County

Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition seeks nominations for 2020 Bike Achievement Awards

Each year, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition (LTBC) honors those that have made significant advancements to promoting safer bicycling and walking opportunities for the Lake Tahoe area. LTBC is seeking nominations from the public for individuals, public agencies, organizations, and businesses who made the Tahoe - Truckee region more bike friendly in 2020.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund $100,000 grant cycle opens for South Shore nonprofits

Nonprofits in the South Lake Tahoe area are invited to apply for $100,000 in Focus and Impact grants from the Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF). The 2021 grant application process is now open and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 11.

A mama bear and her three cubs were living near an apartment complex at the Y in South Lake Tahoe for several months. One day while mama bear was away, local Erik Dahman got a photo of one of the cubs. He pulled out his camera, the cub looked up at him, stood up on it's hind legs, put its paw on the tree, tilted its head, and Erik took the shot.

Agencies work on solution for sunken and abandoned boats on Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For over 100 years, some boat owners were known to scuttle their boats in Lake Tahoe instead of paying for dismantling or removal. In the case of the SS Tahoe, it was meant to be an underwater museum near the shore of Glenbrook in 1940 after spending years docked and rusting in Tahoe City, but a miscalculation of the slope caused the boat to sink to almost 400 feet under water.

Wind and weather advisories in place to start off the week in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The week will start off with the Lake Tahoe Basin under two different weather advisories. Starting at midnight, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 4:00 p.m. on Monday for areas above 7000 feet. Snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of 3-8 inches above 7000 feet. Slushy accumulations around an inch possible at lake level. Winds gusting to 40-45 mph with gusts near 100 mph across mountain ridgetops.

Plan on snow covered passes and travel impacts Monday morning including Donner Summit (I-80), Echo Summit (US-50), and Carson Pass (CA-88).
