Agencies work on solution for sunken and abandoned boats on Lake Tahoe

In the case of the SS Tahoe, it was meant to be an underwater museum near the shore of Glenbrook in 1940 after spending years docked and rusting in Tahoe City, but a miscalculation of the slope caused the boat to sink to almost 400 feet under water.

Wind and weather advisories in place to start off the week in Lake Tahoe

Starting at midnight, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 4:00 p.m. on Monday for areas above 7000 feet. Snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of 3-8 inches above 7000 feet. Slushy accumulations around an inch possible at lake level. Winds gusting to 40-45 mph with gusts near 100 mph across mountain ridgetops.
Plan on snow covered passes and travel impacts Monday morning including Donner Summit (I-80), Echo Summit (US-50), and Carson Pass (CA-88).

That theft led to an investigation by multiple agencies and the recovery of merchandise from several retailers.
Expect sun, snow, wind, traffic and crowds this holiday weekend

As of 9:30 a.m., the California Highway Patrol is working on dispersing cars on US50 at Sierra-at-Tahoe with traffic backed up due to those attempting to pull into the resort. According to Sierra's website there will be reduced capacity today due to wind holds on some lifts and the resort closed the road at 8:45 a.m. If more lifts and terrain opens, their mountain capacity will increase, allowing more guests.

In-person church services resume in South Lake Tahoe

The state's Blueprint Tier 1 prohibition of indoor worship services was challenged by three churches in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Prior to the challenge, a ban on indoor services led many churches to provide virtual services, while others defied orders and had indoor services even when the guidelines prohibited them.

Andi Perry, owner of Twine Floral Co. reached out to Cuppa Tahoe owner Sandra Santané about having flower arrangements for sale for Valentine's Day. Since the coffee house and bookstore has closed its co-working space due to COVID, there was a perfect space to offer Andi's beautiful flowers.
Quick storm drops a foot of snow at local resorts; Next system due in Friday night
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/12/2021 - 7:30amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A quick moving storm passed through the Sierra overnight, leaving about a foot of new snow at ski resorts and chain controls on Lake Tahoe area roads.
With the storm system gone, the overcast skies will be making way for a sunny day with highs in the 40s and a wind up to 5 mph. There will be some areas of patchy fog in the morning. The clearing will be short-lived though as the next system moves in Friday night with snow expected by 10:00 p.m. Another 3-5" of snow is forecast for lake level before it leaves Saturday night. Another weather system is due Monday.

Even though health officers in the different counties around the lake communicated and shared information and stressed for continuity, state leadership had different ways to address the health and safety situation created by the coronavirus.

Highways near Incline Village to be improved and repaved during two-year $35M NDOT project

A contract was approved this week with contractor Q&D Construction. The last time the highways were last fully reconstructed was nearly 14 years ago. As many as 10,000 drivers travel the highways every day.

On November 16, 2020, Jon Berg was driving on I-580 from Reno to the Carson Valley when he was involved in a rollover crash. Inside the car were Berg’s two five-year-old dachshunds Katie and Brandie. Both were spooked and they took off and ended up separated. One was chased into Voltaire Canyon and the other up Spooner Summit.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the greater Lake Tahoe area and Mono County. The incoming system is a quick one with the advisory in effect from 4:00 p.m. Thursday to 4:00 p.m. Friday.

COVID-19 positive students put temporary stop to in-person classes at South Tahoe Middle School
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/09/2021 - 10:54pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Middle School is closed for Cohort B students on Thursday and Friday, February 11 and 12 due to two students testing positive for COVID-19.
The two students had symptoms of COVID-19 and were in attendance at STMS on Thursday and Friday last week, the first two days of the return of in-person classes. Positive test results were obtained on Monday and the school was notified in the afternoon. The school nurses began contact tracing in order to begin the notification process. Fifteen teachers and their classrooms were impacted.

On Monday, February 8, Jennifer Palacios with Make-A-Wish in Reno posted on Facebook the story of 10-year-old Paola, a girl with a rare autoimmune disorder whose dream was to stay in a cabin with her family. She wanted to see snow, play games, watch movies, throw snowballs and make a snowman with her mother and siblings (ages 12 and 14).

So it was with a broad smile that I drove my ’55 Chevy to the lake and found a room to rent for those three months of summer, 1961.
I arrived at dawn to my first day on the job, to clean the pool, and remember the spectacle of sunshine as it bounced off the walls of the Tahoe Basin and into the pool.

SLTPD promotes Justin Brock to sergeant
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/08/2021 - 4:10pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) promoted Justin Brock to sergeant during a ceremony on February 8, 2021.
Sgt. Brock has been with the department since 2006 when he was hired as a Community Service Officer. SLTPD sent him through the police academy and he became an officer in 2008.
During the last 12 years, Brock has served in many positions including narcotics, detectives, officer in charge and field training officer.
"He does a great job," said SLTPD Chief David Stevenson who promoted Brock during the ceremony in front of family.

Elke Reimer and Jennifer Hemmen were members of the Forlorn Hope team that completed their expedition in December 2020. This modern Forlorn Hope Expedition honored and retraced the path 17 Donner Party emigrants took as they set out on in a desperate attempt to cross the mountains to Sacramento, 100 miles away, to seek help in December 1946.

In fact, Honda sold nearly 400,000 CR-Vs in the United States last year, trailing only arch nemesis Toyota's RAV4 in sales, but not by much. For reference, there are only 24,000 Subways in the country.

Health experts across the country are asking people to skip the parties celebrating America's biggest sports day that could turn Super Bowl Sunday into Super-Spreader Sunday.
Travel and gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase your chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu. The pandemic is not over, though case numbers have been increasing at a slower rate than right after the holidays.
