Sunny week ahead for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A dry cold front will drop into the region bringing breezy winds from the north into Monday to start off the week for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Cooler weather is projected for Monday and Tuesday, before rebounding Wednesday through Saturday as high pressure builds across the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Cooler and breezier conditions are
possible next weekend as low pressure develops offshore. This may also bring some light precipitation Easter Sunday into the following week.

Free green waste drop off for South Lake Tahoe for residential customers; 4 commercial days set

South Tahoe Refuse has four scheduled free green waste days for commercial clients and offers it free to residential residents every day. Vouchers are no longer required, but customers must provide their resident service address at time of drop-off.

Clean Green Waste only: pine needles, pinecones, weeds, leaves, branches, etc. – vegetation only. Residential drop off by trucks, trucks with trailers, small tip-trucks and small box vans.

Donald H. Kortes ~ Feb. 27. 1931 - March 24, 2021

Long-time teacher and community member Donald H. Kortes died March 24, 2021 at home in South Lake Tahoe surrounded by his family. His death was due to congestive heart failure and complications from surgery in October. He was 90 years old.

Drought conditions persist in Calfornia

Douglas County Commissioner meetings to start in-person option

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Douglas County has updated its process for hosting public meetings, and beginning on Thursday, April 1, 2021, the Board of County Commissioners will hold hybrid meetings. This format will allow three options - in-person attendance, virtual participation, and live-stream viewing.

Commissioners, staff, and the public can participate via any of three options. The in person location will be at the CVIC Hall, 1604 Esmeralda Ave, Minden, Nev.

Next South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue vaccine clinic planned for April 18/19

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue will be holding their next drive-thru COVID19 vaccine clinic April 18-19, 2021.

They were able to help nearly 1,000 residents during the first community clinic they held at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center. This clinic is for the second doses from that first event and it is unknown if first doses will be available.

Illicit fentanyl cases on the rise in 2021

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Illegal fentanyl has been in the news for years, but it is not somebody else's problem. It is in Douglas County, in El Dorado County and in Placer County.

The illicit fentanyl comes as a cheap filler in counterfeit Xanax, OxyContin, and Percocet pills. It is now also being found in marijuana and vaping products (bootleg vaping cartridges) bought online, through social media, and other illegal distributers.

South Tahoe High Sober Grad Night planned for Class of 2021, donations sought

The Sober Grad Night Task Force for the South Tahoe High School Class of 2021 is planning a special night for a senior class that has faced many challenges due to the pandemic.

The 28th annual Sober Grad Night will be held on Friday, June 11 on the MS Dixie. What better way to celebrate with friends than on a chartered cruise on beautiful Lake Tahoe?

With the 2021 seniors missing most of their school year in person, organizers want a special send off for the students. To keep costs down, they are asking for donations to encourage attendance and to provide tickets for those in need.

1,600 vaccinated at Harrah's Tahoe, next Nevada clinic in Stateline on April 6 for all ages

STATELINE, Nev. - More than 1,600 people received the COVID-19 vaccine at a two-day clinic held at Harrah's Lake Tahoe this week. The casino was the first non-medical host property for Carson City Health and Human Services to administer the vaccine to eligible individuals in partnership with the Nevada National Guard.

The vaccine drive served eligible individuals, including frontline hospitality and restaurant workers, including Harrah’s and Harveys Team Members who work in Nevada.

TRPA updates website to improve user experience

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has upgraded its website, www.trpa.gov, to improve access to documents, environmental resources, and permit information and to answer the demands of an increasingly online and virtual public, the agency said today.

Small fire at Stateline appears to be intentionally set

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A call was received by 911 dispatchers around 10:00 a.m. Friday about a possible structure fire near the intersection of Stateline and Cedar Avenues in the Stateline area of South Lake Tahoe.

Upon arrival, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) found a large pile of paper burning against some debris at the site of The Chateau at the Village parking area.

Vaccines open for Californians 50+ on April 1, all residents over 16 on April 15

With supply of vaccines expected to significantly increase in the coming weeks, the state is expanding vaccine eligibility to more Californians. Starting April 1, individuals aged 50+ will be eligible to make an appointment, and individuals 16+ will be eligible to make an appointment to be vaccinated starting on April 15.

Statewide fiscal year gaming win down 24.60%, South Shore down 3.46%

STATELINE, Nev. - Nevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $$772,408,499 for the month of February 2021. This amounts to a 25.93 percent decrease compared to February 2020, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,042,742,489, according to the monthly report released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a "win" of $20,477,444, up 15.79 percent from February 2020. The casinos on the South Shore reported $7,259,000 in winnings from table games and $13,128,000 from slots.

Bread & Broth 4 Kids adjust schedule due to school changes; Bags available Thursday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) will be adjusting its food bag distribution program to meet the needs of children in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) as they make a shift in school schedules in South Lake Tahoe.

Starting the week of March 29, 2021, the bags will be on buses on Mondays for Cohort A students and on Fridays for all other students. For the current week the bags are on the buses Thursday as scheduled.

Lake Wind Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe overnight

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 11:00 p.m. Thursday, March 25 to 11:00 a.m. Friday. Expect northeast winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph and waves 2 to 5 feet.

Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

The winds come as a cold front passes through the region. There is a chance of rain and snow into Thursday evening. Warmer, spring-like conditions return this

Education and Sharing Day recognized in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tamara Wallace has proclaimed March 24, 2021 to be “Education and Sharing Day, South Lake Tahoe” in recognition of the crucial importance of ethical and moral education. The day will be a time to focus on education after a year in which the pandemic took a tremendous toll on education, with in-person schooling widely curtailed for months. Against this background, the Education Day proclamation seeks to highlight the emphasis that must be placed on education for each of South Lake Tahoe’s young people.

LTCC to resume limited, in-person student services and face-to-face classes

Stateline COVID19 vaccine clinic opens up to other eligible occupations

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Thursday, March 25 at Stateline has opened up available appointments to those who are currently eligible for vaccination in the Quad-County Region. Food industry and hospitality workers are also eligible.

The event is by appointment ONLY. This is for all Quad-county residents and workers 16-years-old and above who are eligible for vaccination. The Pfizer vaccine has been authorized for use in those 16 years and older.

Vaccine clinic for Douglas County food service and hospitality workers to be held in Stateline

There will be a COVID-19 vaccine clinic in Stateline on Thursday, March 25 for those working in the hospitality and food service industry in the Quad-Counties (Douglas, Carson City, Lyon and Storey). Any working in those industries on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe but living on the California side are eligible, and those living in Quad-Counties and working in El Dorado County. Proof of employment is required.

El Dorado County could move to Orange Tier in one week

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County might be moving down to the Orange Tier of the California reopening plan next week. The county currently meets the three criteria metrics for the less restrictive tier and if current case and positivity levels remain stable the county will shift on March 31.

Kenny Chesney postpones 2021 tour stop in Lake Tahoe - pushed to 2022

STATELINE, Nev. - With the cancelation of the 2020 Outdoor Music Series at Harveys Lake Tahoe due to the pandemic, many of the scheduled shows were pushed to 2021 in hopes groups could once again gather.

Kenny Chesney was one of those acts and he has announced the postponement his whole tour to 2022. His 2020 dates in Lake Tahoe had been moved to June and July of this year, and they will be rescheduled to dates yet unannounced.

If you have purchased tickets for the original or previously rescheduled dates, your tickets will be honored at the newly rescheduled dates in 2022.

Twelve homeowners fined in first two months of Measure T VHR ban in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In the first two months of 2021, 102 vacation home rental (VHR) permits have expired under the terms of Measure T. The 2018 voter-initiated measure phases out all VHRs in residential areas of the City of South Lake Tahoe, with the expiration date being their permit renewal date this year.

Starting in 2021, the measure allows for unlimited rentals in commercial zones and in the tourist core, and permanent residents are still able to rent out their homes for up to 30 days per year.

Guest at Harrah's Lake Tahoe wins over $250,000 on progressive three-card poker table

STATELINE, Nev. - A player visiting Lake Tahoe on March 18 hit the Mega Progressive Jackpot on Three Card Poker at Harrah's for $251,175. The Caesars Reward member, who won chose to remain anonymous, was visiting from Orangevale, Calif.

The lucky guest wasted no time getting off to a hot start and clinching a win of their own by scoring a Straight Flush on the first hand dealt.

Snowmobiler dies after 900 foot fall off cliff northwest of Lake Tahoe

A snowmobiler died Saturday after falling from the edge of a ridge above Frog Lake. The Sierra Avalanche Center (SAC) said a group of three people were snowmobiling near the Frog Lake Cliffs around 1:45 p.m. when one of them got off their sled, not realizing how close they were to the overhanging cornice on the edge of the ridge, according to SAC. The weather made visibility difficult and the light was very flat, making it hard to see the edge of the ridge which is at an elevation of 8600 feet.

South Tahoe High Girls Soccer now 3-0; beats Hug at first home game

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow cleared in time for the South Tahoe High School (STHS) Lady Vikings to win both their Varsity and Junior Varsity soccer games Friday, the second week for both teams to come out on top.

The STHS JV played a game against North Tahoe and won 2-0. Giulia Lancellotti scored a goal from a direct kick, and Olivia Kwachak Hall scored off a steal. Molly Adams and her backline earned their first shutout, said Coach Julia Russell.

Varsity took on Hug at their first home game of the modified season.

Suspect arrested after person stabbed and police car window smashed in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 24-year-old man from South Lake Tahoe is under arrest after a stabbing on Sunday.

At about 10:20 a.m. March 21, 2021, South Lake Tahoe Police dispatch received a 911 call about a stabbing in front of the 7-11 located at 3923 Pioneer Trail. The stabbing victim said they were standing at the Red Box DVD rental machine in front of the store when an unidentified male jumped on his back and stabbed him with a metal dry-wall saw.

The victim was able to get the suspect off his back, at which time the suspect fled the scene on foot.

Public health agencies collaborate on new mini-documentary about vaping epidemic

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – Partnership Douglas County (PDC) in collaboration with public health agencies, substance use prevention coalitions and DreamPilot Films, announced the first of two mini documentaries on youth substance use in Nevada as part of a 2021 Nevada Youth Advocacy series.

Operation School Bell helps local students with clothing needs and books

To help children with new school clothes, volunteers from the Assistance League Sierra Foothills visit South Lake Tahoe each Fall to take local children shopping.

On the big day, the chosen students get a shopping voucher for $70 if in grades K-5, and $100 in middle school and hit the aisles for school-related clothing including shoes, pants, sweaters and other needed items. They also get to pick out a book of their choice and they all leave with a huge bag of new clothes, wide grins and a renewed sense of confidence.

The new clothes also help with the children's self-esteem.
