South Tahoe Middle School wraps up unique Nordic ski season
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/05/2021 - 5:40pmThe South Tahoe Middle School Nordic Ski Team is wrapping up a modified season next week with races on Wednesday and Thursday.
The boys and girls on the team started practicing at the beginning of December with in-person, socially distanced practice two days a week and virtual practice another two days a week. Coaches kept the alphabetical cohorts together.

The pandemic has changed a lot of that normalcy, but crowds are still expected to head to the Sierra to enjoy skiing and riding under sunny skies with above average temperatures (in the 50s), and perhaps the game.

Father and step-mother arrested on multiple charges after death of 11-year-old El Dorado County boy
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/04/2021 - 10:33pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Almost 13 months after 11-year-old Roman Lopez was found deceased in his Placerville home, his father and step-mother have been arrested on multiple criminal charges including child abuse, poisoning and torture.
The Placerville Police Department and El Dorado District Attorney’s office held a press conference Thursday, announcing the arrests of Jordan Piper, 36, and Lindsay Piper, 38, in Calaveras County.
NDOT launches draft state rail plan; Public invited to comment and attend virtual rail summit

Douglas County Sheriffs Office and NHP joins forces to focus on impaired drivers

DCSO will increase patrol primarily in the Stateline area of the Lake Tahoe basin. Their Joining Forces campaign runs from Feb. 4 through Feb. 15. The NHP campaign is Feb. 4 to Feb. 13.
Monthly and annual gaming reports released by Nevada, South Shore casinos have net loss
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/04/2021 - 12:00amSTATELINE, Nev. - Nevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $683,733,423 for the month of December 2020. This amounts to a 35.35 percent decrease compared to December 2019, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,057,539,090, according to the monthly report released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
Casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a "win" of $15,611,574, down 14.08 percent from December 2019. Most areas in the state saw double-digit losses.
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

New website puts all Lake Tahoe road, weather, traffic information in one spot

Recent storms still not enough to bring Sierra snowpack to average
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/03/2021 - 1:08pmPHILLIPS STATION, Calif. - The second manual snow survey of the season was conducted by the Department of Water Resources (DWR) at Phillips Station on Wednesday. They measured 63 inches of snow with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 17 inches, which is 93 percent of average at that location.
The SWE measures the amount of water contained in the snowpack and is a key component of DWR’s water supply forecast.
"The series of storms helped, but not enough to make up the deficient of last few months," said Sean de Guzman, Chief of DWR’s Snow Surveys and Water Supply Forecasting Section.

Alpine County graduates to Orange Tier
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/02/2021 - 5:14pmALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Alpine County moved from the Red Tier into the less restrictive Orange Tier in the California Color-Coded County Tier System on Tuesday. They now join Sierra County and Trinity counites in the Orange Tier. Mariposa County is currently in the Red with the other 54 counties in the state in the restrictive Purple Tier.
Each county is assigned to a risk-level based on new cases, positive tests, and health equity.
Full fire response after smoke fills two condos in South Lake Tahoe

Around 7:45 a.m. February 2, SLTFR responded along with Lake Valley Fire Protection District and JPA ambulances.

This year, a record number 226 members have become part of the collective giving organization created in 2015.
Thanks to all of the members and a continued generous donation from Ms. Lisa Maloff, for helping raise this $100,000. This year is also exciting as all areas of need will be funded.
LTUSD receives $330,000 to replace diesel bus with electric bus

The new bus arrived in December and has been transporting students daily since then.

Sierra-at-Tahoe had the previous concession at the popular lakefront site but they fulfilled the term of their agreement and chose not extend the option to continue. South Tahoe Standup Paddle took their option of operating water rentals for another three-season term.
Jamie Anderson wins two golds at X Games in Aspen
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/31/2021 - 10:45pmSouth Lake Tahoe native and Olympic gold medalist Jamie Anderson entered the 2021 X Games in Aspen as the most decorated female in the history of the games, and has now tied Shaun White with the most gold medals in Slopestyle at seven.
The 30-year-old Anderson, who grew up in Meyers and called Sierra-at-Tahoe her home mountain, won gold in the Jeep Women's Snowboard Slopestyle on Thursday and Pacifico Women's Snowboard Big Air on Sunday. These were her 18th and 19th medals at the annual ski and snowboard competition, her 7th and 8th gold medals.
Lake Wind and Winter Weather advisories in place to start the week in Lake Tahoe

To start, a Wind Advisory is in place from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday, February 1 for South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Truckee, Markleeville, Stateline, Glenbrook, and Incline Village. Expect winds from the southwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Waves 2 to 3 feet with highest waves along eastern shores.

Monday and Tuesday will be synchronous virtual learning days which allows for teachers to prepare for not only the next storm this week, but also a return to hybrid instruction for Cohort B. Nordic Center at Lake Tahoe Community College open for classic and skate ski

Five to seven kilometers of trails will be maintained and groomed on a regular basis 2-3 times per week for the season, offering views of the forest along with Freel and Jobs Sister peaks.

The guide includes detailed recommendations on how to retrofit homes to withstand wildfire. Each section contains an explanation of how every home component is vulnerable to wildfire and what can be done to improve that component. It can be downloaded for free HERE.

Winter Storm Watch issued for Lake Tahoe

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch for South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Stateline, and Incline Village for possible heavy snow Monday afternoon through Tuesday night.
Heavy snow is possible. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches in the Tahoe Basin, 10 to 18 inches above 7000 feet, with up to 2 feet along the Sierra crest possible. Winds could gust as high as 70 mph over the high Sierra.

Sundance Film Festival to show movie from South Lake Tahoe filmmaker

Bread & Broth 4 Kids moves weekly food bag program due to storm

Buses from Lake Tahoe Unified School District normally distribute the bags to students with the breakfasts and lunches on Wednesdays, but with the possibility of a snow day and heavy snow, Bread & Broth moved to Friday for safety concerns.
STPUD extends COVID-19 rate relief program

hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The District’s COVID-19 Rate Relief Program offers a 50 percent credit up to $3,000 for the next quarterly sewer bill for customers in need.
“Extending the rate relief program is necessary because it’s obvious that the community is still suffering from the financial effects of COVID,” says Kelly Sheehan, Board President.

For snow that has been measured in inches so far this winter, a big change hits Lake Tahoe and the Sierra starting Tuesday night when it will be measured in feet.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has now upgraded the storm warnings to blizzard level.

Lake effect snow could bring additional six inches of snow to South Shore Lake Tahoe Monday night
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/25/2021 - 4:02pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a new Winter Weather Advisory for Monday at 4:00 p.m. to Tuesday morning at 4:00 a.m. This new advisory is due to what is known as "lake effect snow." Six more inches of snow can drop on the south shore of Lake Tahoe area this evening.
Lake effect occurs when a mass of unstable cold air moves over a mass of water that is warm in comparison. The lake provides moisture for the band of weather moving over it.
Cal Tahoe JPA seeks bids to remodel old jail for new headquarters
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/25/2021 - 1:24pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bids are currently being sought for the remodel project at the new home of the California Tahoe Emergency Services Operations Authority (CalTahoe) in South Lake Tahoe. They have been without a permanent home since early 2020 when South lake Tahoe Fire Rescue took back its Station 2 for fire and medic operations.
