EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Crozier Fire burning on the west slope of the Sierra Nevada in El Dorado County has grown to 706 acres and is five percent contained. The fire is burning in a remote area of heavy timber and thick brush which makes access difficult. There are 752 firefighting personnel working on the fire with 46 engines, four helicopters and 14 hand crews.

The Carson City School District has announced a school-based initiative aimed at enhancing the educational environment and minimizing distractions in classrooms. Starting August 19, 2024, all middle and high school students will be required to place their cell phones and other smart technology devices in locking pouches during school hours.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has been invited as the keynote speaker for the 28th annual Lake Tahoe Summit on August 14.
This year’s theme is “Connecting Tahoe: Investing in Transit, Trails, and Technology for the Future” and the summit is open to the public. The focus will be on efforts by federal, state, and local stakeholders to address Lake Tahoe’s transportation challenges and support innovative solutions to protect the lake for future generations.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will be joining forces with participating law enforcement agencies in Nevada for a Joining Forces Pedestrian Safety Campaign. The campaign will take place from August 7-31, 2024.
Nevada had 109 pedestrian fatalities in 2023. This Pedestrian Safety Campaign aims to increase law enforcement participation by coordinating highly visible patrols across the State of Nevada to educate both pedestrians and drivers about road safety.

U.S. 395 will fully close for 15 days for the Sonora Junction Shoulders Project as crews install two under-highway wildlife crossings, providing safe and sustainable passage for mule deer and other area wildlife.
Beginning Wednesday, September 4, the highway will fully close between Bridgeport and State Route 108.
The project, which began construction in May, is widening the shoulders of the highway to 8 feet, installing rail-element retaining walls, stabilizing slopes with anchored mesh, and installing wildlife crossings.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Johnson Meadow behind Grocery Outlet in South Lake Tahoe is often the spot where homeless encampments pop up with tents, chairs, sleeping bags, and trash intermingled among the willows, wildflowers, and river.
In early June this year, part-time resident Randy Smith wandered into the meadow and was delighted to see the wildflowers. Those views were quickly replaced with abandoned camp debris.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A juvenile was arrested on Saturday after allegedly stealing a vehicle from a home on Tanglewood Drive. South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Scott Crivelli said the car was stolen at 3 a.m., and later in the day it was spotted near Martin Avenue and Black Bart Avenue. The officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) who saw the stolen car attempted to make a traffic stop at Black Bart and Genoa avenues. The car sped away.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Help Bread & Broth 4 Kids on Saturday, August 10 when they hold Cram-A-Fire-Truck from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Grocery Outlet.
For many years, Bread & Broth 4 Kids has sponsored Cram-A-Cruiser events to supplement the food purchased for the B&B 4 Kids weekend food program. For the upcoming event this weekend, the fire department has donated the use of a fire truck to hold all food donations. They are hoping the community will “cram” the vehicle with nutritious, kid-friendly food items.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The driver of a 73-foot big rig took a route not approved as a truck route on Monday morning, finding himself, and the truck, stuck on SR89 and stranding motorists. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded at 11:12 a.m. to the area just north of Cascade Creek, and south of Emerald Bay. Traffic was held up for hours when the truck took a turn too tight, blocking the flow of vehicles.
The truck-trailer combination will remain on the highway until it can be moved safely, but traffic is flowing. The air lines on the truck are inoperable.
