DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A man who had been reported missing on Sunday afternoon in Topaz Lake was found deceased on Monday morning. On July 22, 2024, at approximately 9:45 a.m., Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Marine units and dive team, along with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, located and recovered 51-year-old Rodney Mitchell of Reno, Nev.
Although drowning is believed to be the cause of death, the decedent was taken to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s office for a definitive cause of death.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temperatures will continue to run above late July averages in South Lake Tahoe, with the Reno and Carson Valley under moderate-major heat risks with their highs above 100.
The chance for daily thunderstorms continues through Thursday. Storms will be trending wetter through the week with increased chances for localized heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
There will be a cooling trend at the end of the week, with highs in South Lake Tahoe in the low 80s, and possibly high 70s.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Ridgeway Fire in Pollock Pines closed lanes of US50 for a while on Sunday, July 21 so firefighters could fight the fire reported just after noon. Quick response from the air and ground stopped the forward progress quickly, and so far seven acres have burned.
Perimeter Map had homes between Pony Express Trail and the highway evacuate, but as of 2 p.m., the mandatory evacuations have been dropped.
A second fire was reported at the same time nearby and small plumes of smoke could be seen at the Alert California cameras.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What started as a dream in 1984 became reality in 1991 when the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Demonstration Garden held its grand opening after a year of construction. Designed with the collaboration of several agencies, groups, and individuals, the garden was created on seven acres to showcase attractive native and adapted plants while using conservation techniques to address water quality concerns. Several gazebos and sitting areas were added with tree and plant descriptions along a pathway that meandered through the displays.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A mudslide about 100 feet wide and three inches deep has crossed over US50 west of Strawberry. Along with the mud, branches, and other debris also in the slide.
As of 4:45 p.m., Caltrans is sending equipment to clear the mud from Placerville with an estimated time of their arrival in one hour.
Caltrans signage is warning people to not go through the mud and traffic is backing up.

8:00PM UPDATE: There have been a few more earthquakes centered in the middle of Lake Tahoe this evening. According to USGS, there was a 3.4 magnitude just after 8 p.m., followed by 1.5 at 8:05 p.m., and a 2.8 at 8:19 p.m. The University of Nevada reports several small ones during the day, all under 1.0 magnitude.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - If you were living on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe August 26–27, 1980, you most likely watched the planted bomb detonate inside Harveys Lake Tahoe. The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is holding its next Tahoe History Talks on the Beach on Tuesday, July 23, and the topic is "I Got Bombed at Harvey's." That saying was quickly put onto t-shirts and sold through South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – In response to questions from interested community members and stakeholders, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is providing the following update on the Basin Wide Trails Analysis Project.
In September 2023, LTBMU initiated a 30-day public comment period for the draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Basin Wide Trails Analysis Project. The EA included an analysis of e-bike use and addressed trail system access and connectivity on National Forest lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

CARNELIAN BAY, Calif. - North Tahoe Public Utility District (NTPUD), Placer County, and the California Tahoe Conservancy issued a health advisory for the Carnelian Bay area of Lake Tahoe following a spill of approximately 85,000 gallons of untreated sewage that reached the lake Thursday evening.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Users of the popular multi-use paved trails throughout the Tahoe Basin and Truckee will find new messages stenciled in chalk along the trails encouraging trail etiquette. The messages, tested last summer on the Legacy Trail in Truckee and later on the Pope-Baldwin Trail in South Lake Tahoe, encourage users to “share the path,” “keep right, pass left,” and also include more tongue-in-cheek reminders like “we put a man on the moon, surely we can share this trail.” Messages have been stenciled in English and Spanish.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev.-A recent graduate from Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) was honored during last week's American Century Championship with the $10,000 Gene Upshaw Memorial Scholarship Fund Award.
The annual award is presented during the celebrity golf tournament in honor of Upshaw who played in 15 of the events, then had to withdraw from the 2008 American Century Championship as he became sick, and died of pancreatic cancer not long after, in October 2008.

Even slight changes in the ecosystem can have domino effects, such as the cross-cutting threats of aquatic invasive species, algae growth, and damage to native habitats. And global forces are affecting our treasured lake. Scientists report that Lake Tahoe’s average temperature has risen 1.4 degrees in just the last 50 years. Longer periods of drought and low water levels are expected to exacerbate water quality concerns and increase threats to Lake Tahoe’s pristine ecosystem.
