LTCC Announcing 40th Anniversary Plans at March Press Conference

Event Date:
March 5, 2014 - 11:00am

The Lake Tahoe Community College District was voted into existence 40 years ago, on March 5, 1974. The College has big plans to celebrate its anniversary with a number of fun and educational events this year. Members of the media, the community, and college staff and faculty are all welcome to attend a press conference on Wednesday, March 5th at 11 a.m. to hear the College’s plans to mark its 40th year, and to honor its history. The conference will be held at the Econo Lodge at 2659 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, where the College first offered classes and welcomed its first students.

A number of speakers will be at the press conference to share the story of the College’s origins and history, including former college presidents, current and first Board of Trustees president Roberta Mason, retired faculty and administrators, and other key people who were instrumental to the College’s formation and impressive growth. Local and regional government officials and school district administrators will also be on hand. Sandwiches, crudités, refreshments and fruit will be served, along with a cake to mark the 40th anniversary of the College.

In the last 40 years, LTCC has developed from a tiny institution housed in that old motel on Highway 50 to a comprehensive community college and world-class educational destination. The College began with 1,400 students its first year. Today LTCC serves about 5,500 students each year who enjoy a beautiful 164-acre wooded campus with a full-service library, a theatre and performing arts building, a fitness education center, a commercial-grade culinary arts kitchen, the Haldan Art Gallery, the child development center, and much more. LTCC’s first graduating class consisted of 11 students. At this year's graduation ceremony in June, approximately 165 students will earn their associate degrees. Many of those grads will transfer to 4-year universities—a testament to LTCC’s being the number one transfer school among California community colleges of its size.

There is much in LTCC's 40-year history to celebrate. Please join us on March 5th to hear more about the wonderful events planned to mark this special year.
