The AAUW – South Lake Tahoe Branch is a branch of the American Association of University Women, a national organization of more than 170,000 members and supporters. Founded in 1881, the AAUW has been the voice heard at the national level promoting education equity for girls and women.

The AAUW today seeks to continue to unite graduates of educational institutions and be a powerful advocate and visible leader in equity and education through research, philanthropy, and measurable change in critical areas impacting the lives of women and girls.

Del Laine, South Lake Tahoe trailblazer, dies at the age of 90

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A true trailblazer in the forming of the City of South Lake Tahoe has died at the age of 90. Del Laine, passed away from natural causes with her family at her side.

She served on South Lake Tahoe's City Council from 1976-1980, and then again from 1984-1988 and became the City's first female Mayor in 1977. She would go on to serve one more term as Mayor during her time on council.

Soroptimist Club of Tahoe Sierra holds virtual Elegant Evening auction and party

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Saturday, April 18, hundreds of locals would have been dressing up and attending the 31st annual Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra Elegant Evening.

Even though canceled the club is holding their online auction along with contests and a live stream dedication to the event. Since 100 percent of funds raised at Elegant Evening go back into the South Lake Tahoe community to enhance the lives of its women and youth, the club is committed to doing the same this year.

Soroptimist Club of Tahoe Sierra creates online auction in place of Elegant Evening

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra has arrived at the very difficult decision to cancel its 31st annual Elegant Evening celebration originally scheduled for April 18, 2020. With the casinos closing and guidelines from the Center for Disease Control advising people to not attend large functions, the event will not be held this year.

But all is not lost.

Soroptimist Club of Tahoe Sierra celebrates women in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as they have for the past 43 years, the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra Club is honoring women and youth in the South Lake Tahoe community. They recently held their annual awards celebration and honored four young women from South Tahoe Middle School and South Tahoe High School as well as four women from the community.

For the GIVE Award, honored were Alexi Haven, Tovah Jordan, Esty Zanetti, and Maiella Riva. The Ruby Award was given to Suzanne Boyer and the Live Your Dream Award was given to Heather Wilson, Olga Zepeda and Kelly Meyer.

DAR hosting Meet and Greet in South Lake Tahoe - Canceled

Lake Tahoe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is hosting a Meet & Greet on Saturday, March 28, 2020, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This will be held at the South Lake Tahoe Library. Women interested in DAR membership are invited to come meet DAR members and to learn about what is happening in today's DAR.

Founded in 1890, the Daughters of the American Revolution is a non-profit, non-political women's service organization for women ages 18 and over who descend from American Revolutionary War ancestors.

Remodel and tech investments expand medical imaging at Barton Health

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health continues its expansion of medical imaging technology, investing in the latest equipment that enhances services, expands care, and improves the patient experience. The acquisition of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system has equipped Barton to now offer advanced MRI prostate and breast screenings. In addition, Barton’s Nuclear Medicine Suite recently completed a $1.2 million remodel to accommodate a new hybrid SPECT/CT scanning system that provides a new view on health issues within the body.

Carmen Elaine Withrow 1942 ~ 2019

Carmen Elaine Withrow (Terrell) passed away peacefully on October 8th, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, she will be dearly missed by those that knew and loved her. She was a compassionate person, kind to everyone, not one to talk about others and always there for you in a time of need. She was born on June 19, 1942 at home in Whitt, Texas, the youngest of 6 children and 12 years younger than the next oldest sibling.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Elevating Humanity is the theme of the 4th annual TEDx South Lake Tahoe at the Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theatre on Saturday, October 19, 2019.

The goal of organizers this year is to uplift individuals and spark positivity to make the world a better place. All of the speakers presenting during the evening will use this theme as they inspire attendees.

So far, three speakers have been revealed and over the next few weeks, the other seven will be introduced on the TEDx website, http://tedxsouthlaketahoe.com.

DAR Daughters serve lunch to veterans at LTCC

Terrorism of 9/11 was call to duty for South Lake Tahoe police officer

September 11th, 2001 terrorists shocked the nation as Americans all across the country watched the twin towers fall. The tragic events that day changed the lives of many Americans. Some lost their mothers, fathers, sisters, friends, and brothers, and for some, like Officer Traci Trapani of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), the events of that day were a call to duty to protecting the general welfare of the American public against all enemies, both foreign and domestic.

Grand opening of Robert Maloff Center in South Lake Tahoe

The doors are now officially open at the 26,000 square foot state-of-the-art Robert Maloff Center, home to the Barton Center for Orthopedics & Wellness.

During a ribbon cutting ceremony at the South Lake Tahoe facility Thursday, July 12, Lisa Maloff was honored for her $10 million donation in her late husband's name that made the dream to improve community health and well-being of others a reality.

AAUW South Lake Tahoe sponsors Tech Trek campers

The South Lake Tahoe branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), recently awarded three sponsorships to a week-long STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) focused Tech Trek Camp on the UC Davis campus in July. The winners are Kyla Schrauben, Daniela Bonilla, and Evelyn Bennett  All three girls are from South Tahoe Middle School, with an alternate, Mia Roper, chosen from Whittell.

These girls who are entering 8th grade next September were nominated by their science/math teachers and selected following a personal interview.

AAUW-South Lake Tahoe awards two scholarships

The South Lake Tahoe branch of the American Association of University Women AAUW) recently awarded two $1500 scholarships to women graduating from Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) who are going on to further their education at the college or university level.

The club's two winners this year are both from South Lake Tahoe.

Hannah Brown attained an Associate’s degree in math and Spanish from LTCC and will be attending UC Davis to major in computer science.

Almost one year ago almost five million women, men and children gathered around the world to participate in the Women's March on Washington on the same day President Trump was being inaugurated.

They gathered to stand together in their protest of reproductive rights, equal pay, safety for women in the workplace and more. They stood against racism, sexism, sexual assault and harassment. They stood against Trump and his policies that were racist, anti-LGBT and anti-women.

Live Violence Free to celebrate 40 years of serving community with Gala

Who would have known a horseshoe game at TJ’s Peanut Farm (now known as Steamer’s Bar and Grill) in 1977 would so greatly impact a community? It was this game that raised the first dollar to fund an organization that would go on to help thousands of South Lake Tahoe community members affected by domestic violence, including more than 1,000 last year.

As Live Violence Free (LVF,) formerly the SLT Women’s Center, celebrates 40 years of serving the community with its annual Sunset Gala on Sept. 15, board members, staff and volunteers are honoring their predecessors.

Women Who Dare, a cross-country interview project, is inviting recommendations of inspirational women for inclusion in a forthcoming podcast. Any woman is eligible for recommendation, as long as she inspires others. Suggestions for the Women Who Dare project will be accepted until March 31.

Northstar holds special women's biking events all summer

Northstar California Resort is rolling out the red carpet for ladies all summer long with specialized mountain bike events and activities designed to fit the schedules and coaching needs of local women.

Mom’s Morning Out: An Event for Women, by Women

Mom’s Morning Out Held in South Lake Tahoe: A Morning Just for Women

Over 200 women flocked to Lake Tahoe Community College for the fourth annual “Mom’s Morning Out” on Saturday, May 3.

Women of all ages, not just moms, delighted in a morning of pampering and fitness. The morning started with the option to participate in a yoga class with The Studio Lake Tahoe or an outdoor cardio and strength training with Megan Waskiewicz from Lake Tahoe Community College.

April is a big month for Live Violence Free. It is national Child Abuse Prevention, as well as, Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The entire month is dedicated to honoring victims and survivors of both child abuse and sexual assault. With 80 percent of sexual assault victims being under the age of 30 and a report of child abuse made every ten seconds, it is vital we stand up against the dangers of the abuse. As two of our primary focuses at LVF, we are illuminating the truths and celebrating the efforts to combat the violence directly impacting our community.

Barton continues to support women’s health services in South Lake Tahoe

Health Care Reform continues to be the buzz word around the nation, and with the upcoming presidential election, reform will continue to be among one of the hottest discussion topics. Sally Ride, First American Woman In Space, Dies of Pancreatic Cancer

In a space agency filled with trailblazers, Sally K. Ride was a pioneer of a different sort. The soft-spoken California physicist broke the gender barrier 29 years ago when she rode to orbit aboard space shuttle Challenger to become America’s first woman in space.

Ride, 61, died in La Jolla, Calif. after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer, NASA reports on Monday.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, a 94-member non-profit community-service organization of professional and business women from California and Nevada announced their 2012 - 2013 Board of Directors at Harrah’s Resort in Stateline, June 27.
SI Sierra Nevada Region Governor-Elect Janice Labadie, a florist from Davis, Calif. and Regional Secretary Patricia Papp, a South Lake Tahoe Realtor and member of sister organization SI Tahoe Sierra, were both on hand to install the new board.
