Letters: No Globe Alliance wants change or elimination of SnowGlobe event

We are a diverse group of local South Lake Tahoe residents who are organizing to eliminate or relocate SnowGlobe. This event has unfairly displaced local residents, invaded our homes with noise, closed access to whole neighborhoods, exposed our forests to unnecessary and dangerous potential for fire and attracted visitors who do not reflect the family friendly Lake Tahoe we want to be. We want to bring the experiences of our local community into the light.
Supporters suggest that their event has brought millions of dollars to our community but have yet to provide any real accounting of this claimed revenue. We know that the City of South Lake Tahoe has incurred many expenses due to road closures, policing, waste management and of course, the destruction of our Community Play Fields. Supporters have stated this event is family friendly and attracts the kind of visitors we want and yet ignore the facts of what goes on during this event. How is an event that includes an overdose tent family friendly? How does an event that has one death and many emergency room and intensive care visits family friendly? Why does our local hospital increase staffing during this event? Why is there a spike in reported shop-lifting during this event? Plainly, this is not the family friendly environment that some want to pretend it to be.
Our group, the No Globe Alliance, hopes to bring the experiences of local residents into the public light. There is more to this event than simply a concert at a Community College. Any discussion on the future of this event should have the full facts and not simply the impressions of those who stand to gain from this event. Our City Manager and the City Council need to hear from the whole community what our experiences are. We hope to collect those stories and bring them to the public so the real story gets told.
Please join us! We will be attending City Council meetings, going to Parks and Recreation meetings, interviewing local businesses and public services and, most importantly, sharing our personal experiences. We have a Facebook group, No Globe Alliance, and will be posting your stories there. We can be reached via email at noglobe18@gmail.com and via our Facebook page. Come and share your experience and join us in getting our neighborhoods back. Just by joining the discussion you will help our cause.
Thanks!
