The Theatre Arts Department at Lake Tahoe Community College presents the fantasy/adventure Still Life With Iris March 14-23 in the Duke Theatre. Written by Steven Dietz, this award-winning play chronicles a young girl’s quest to regain her memory, her past, and with them, her home.
Still Life With Iris is a fantastical adventure that centers on a young girl's search for a simple thing: home. Iris lives with her mother in the land of Nocturno, a magical place where the workers make, by night, all of the things we see in the world by day. The rulers of Nocturno remove Iris’ memory, and bring her to Great Island to be their daughter. Iris joins with friends she meets on her journey - Annabel Lee (a young woman from the sea) and Mozart (the composer at age 11) - and seeks to find her way back home.
Rather than using all adult actors for the production, LTCC Theatre Director Susan Boulanger cast five children to play the leading role of Iris and her friends.
“I wanted to stay true to what I feel is at the heart of the play, and the best way to do that was to have children play the children,” says Boulanger. “We have really talented kids in the show. I am thrilled to be able to give them this opportunity.”
There are two sets of real-life parents and children who have been cast in this production. Maddy Evans, who plays the role of Iris, will share the stage with her brother, Sam, as well as her mother, Diana Evans, who plays the role of Iris’ mother. Emery Hansa Beaver will also be onstage with her mom, Carolin.
Performances of Still Life With Iris are March 14, 15, 20, 21 at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees on March 16 and 23 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for seniors and groups of eight or more, and $5 for students with a valid student I.D. and children under 13.
